  • Wow, what a labor of love! Outstanding in all areas of track, scenery, buildings .. but the background artwork is exceptional ... did you paint that yourself, or did you contract a local artist? Either way, congratulations on an absolutely beautiful layout ... I just may have to schedule a vacation out your way to see that in person! :)

  • Thanks so much , The backdrops are a combo of commercial and hand painted as well as structures cut directly out of books and magazines. Even some small parts were printed from pictures off the computer.

    You are welcome anytime.

    Thanks , Mike

  • I think the very blurry clouds against the greyish-but-clear mountains on the backdrop enhance the depth. Nice!

  • Thanks Spence. I general I am happy with the backdrops but some places need more work.

    Thanks , Mike

  • very awesome bro.

what do you make the mountains from?

    is it polystyrene?

  • Brandon , The mountains are cardboard or foam based with screen wire over the top and covered with wet news paper then plaster. I then use a textured plaster called Model Mount ,made by a local new mexican to give texture.

    Thanks , Mike

  • I don't know if you know any of this, are n scale steam locomotives are hard to upkeep

  • Well , In all my years of model railroading I have found that (like the real thing) steam seems to require much more tweeking and maintainace. I have had a few steam locos that have run well for a long time but have been few and far between.

    Thanks , Mike

  • Great looking layout! I wish I could produce clouds like that.

  • You can , the tops of the clouds are done with a torn cardboard mask and a spray can and the bottoms are done with an airbrush and Polly Scale Grimmy Black.

    Thanks Guys , Mike

  • Great video!
