Not sure that he could play the bugle that well, but he did buy that mouthpiece we see in the film and did cart around a bugle alot during filming, even AFTER filming. (Check out the commentary on the 50th Anniversary Edition on DVD of FHTE. I think Alvin Sargent says he was in a restaurant and MONTY, (still in his PREW character), started playing the trumpet....in the Restaurant! Some guy told him to "knock it off", but he kept on until finally the guy knocked Monty out, (who was very drunk.)
This is so frustrating. From Here To Eternity should be public domain because of the beauty of its content. The book, the movie have made their money and now the copyright pimps should lay off and let this masterpiece become part of education. When Brando says cry havoc are we supposed to shilling up to some Brit corp?
Funny my Aunt moved to California and married. When I was young we and visited we often went to her in-laws who lived in Beverley Hills. I was told the house formerly belonged to Montgomery Clift and Angie Dickenson. Getting older and seeing the movies from that era I felt quite privileged to have been in that house, part of his history.
Always been fascinated by the life and times of the Pineapple Army, probably because of. Jones' description and this wonderful movie. It's a human drama but also underscores the tragedy that hit the U.S. forces in the Pacific in the early stages of the war. Everybody in this movie was terrific but I remember as a youngster being so surprised to see beautiful, wholesome Donna Reed playing a hooker so well.
Montgomery Clift should have won the Best Actor Oscar for this and A PLACE IN THE SUN. Ironically, a lot of the actors who were inspired by Clift have won Oscars (including Al Pacino and Robert De Niro).
I have to agree with AlexMokori and kitpackard. Monty WAS robbed! He so deserved to win that Oscar! This is a performance that will remain a classic forever...
A truly fantastic bit of both ACTING on Clift's part and sound mixing/dubbing. Why? Because there is NO WAY IN this World, that a valve-less, note-less BUGLE could ever emit these NOTES! TRUMPET, ( dubbed in, btw), YES. Bugle no.
Nevertheless, the way it plays into the narrative is excellently done.
Some 45 mins into story), we have NEVER heard "PREW" play the bugle. Yet he does in a display of his prowess AND his "soft" F-you to ALL. BEST ACTOR of '53--CLIFT was robbed! Period. RIP, Monty C.
@AlexMokori Couldn't agree more! The complexity of Clift's performance is so dexterous, so nuanced--you learn something more about Prew everytime you watch it. Holden was magnetic in STALAG 17, absolutely, but Clift is the one who really deserved that Oscar.

@AlexMokori lol. I read that he learned to play just the same because he wanted it to look authentic. ;^) <3 to Clift! One of the very Best!
