From this video I surmise you used diesel gasoline instead of regular gasoline (safer), it would have been more climatic if you used regular (bomb effect).

The fire started on the application of the water? Might want to reread that. A solid block of sodium or potassium would also react with the air. If you purchased them today they sometimes come in a jar of kerosene to not be exposed to air. Thank you for watching!

The camera's automatic aperture stops down the light when it saw the bright fire.

The fire is very bright, and since the fire is in the center of the screen, the camera has to adjust light level. If the background did not get darker, the fire would get brighter, causing the picture to not be seen. Its just all about camera adjustment.

I first saw this effect at a huge log tower fire that was about 15 feet high. The fire was lit by rocket to punctuate a story during the nighttime, and it was awesome. At night with a rocket that gives off a lot of light or sparks this is really cool, especially if no one sees the string or knows how the fire will be lit.
