  • like how ya have window screen material in your funnel to make sure your filter wont fall through. just had one do that to me yesterday. got 2 cheap plastic funnels from Kragen car parts place for like 1.50$ each. one wide one long. the top side was wide, great for pouring into but the opening at the bottom was big as a quarter. my filter went right through into my keeper container and had to re filter everything.

  • real nice video I have drain cleaner that has I think aluminum bits in it "Think drano" Can I use it? Also I have drain cleaner which is also NaOH but mixed with sodium carbonate and NACl "Salt" can I use that as well I also Have pure NaOH but it is more expensive and would like to conserve it for other experiments

  • @steveu235 an elegant solution to the problem with the aluminium grains is to pour the drain cleaner onto a sieve and pour water on the pellets. The aluminium will barely react and you get a not too strong solution of NaOH. Boil off the water on a stove to get the crude solid

  • why would you even want to make sodium nitrate if you already have ammonium nitrate? isnt ammonium nitrate stronger? good vid tho.

  • @flamingchucknorris Sodium (or better potassium) nitrate works much better for many experiments (black powder for example) than ammonium nitrate, unless what you want to do is produce a very fast explosion.

  • Does this work if u use fluid drain cleaner??

  • @PizzaPower98 I wouldn't do that, it contains other chemicals like hypochlorite and more tensides, which would contaminate the product.

  • @ifartwell You could accidentally ignite the mixture if you heat it to strongly

  • the fertalizer has ammonium nitrate in it right ? and you combine it with soduim hydroxide from the drain cleaning there by making sodium nitrate ...

  • @wil7vin correct.

  • what brand of fertilizer did you use?

  • I'm not sure. To be honest, I got it as a present from my neighbor, lol

  • is there any fertlizer that contains sodium nitrate because i heard fertilizers have sodium nitrate some of them i dont know what are there brand names

  • what fertlizer? what the name of the fertlizer that had sodium nitrate in it ?

  • The fertilizer I used contained ammonium nitrate, which I reacted with the sodium hydroxide to make sodium nitrate.

  • My drain cleaner already contains sodium nitrate with sodium hydroxide is there an easy way to separate the two chemicals?

  • The concentration of NaNO3 in drain cleaner (mine contains it, too) is negligible. However if you really want to separate them, the sodium nitrate is added as chunks, which differ from the NaOH balls in shape. I´m not quite sure if that´s the sodium nitrate (it might also be those "anionic tensides", duh), but i guess so. Have fun with it :P

  • Is there a way to get just the NaOH using re-crystalization or something, physically separating is very difficult.

  • The NaOH part dissolves much faster. So dissolve your drain cleaner and as soon as the balls are gone, filter off the crystals. That should give you a much higher purity.

However I figured out that those crystals are NOT sodium nitrate. Sorry :-(

  • f i start out with 1 gram of ammonium nitrate as my 2 parts, and 0.5 gram as my 1 part NaOH, will the ammonia gas released be small enough so I can try this indoors. in my garage? Its been cold outside lately where I live.

  • it depends on how well your garage is ventilated. You can easily determine the exact amount of ammonia you´re releasing:

120 grams of this mixture (1 mole of each substance) release 22.4 litres of ammonia gas (= 1 mole).

1.5 grams should not be much of a problem! Even 10/5 grams won´t be THAT bad, if you do the reaction in a weak aqueous solution (the water will take up much ammonia and release it slowly, so you can put it outside and wait some hours!)

And: Some days ago we had 0°F here!

  • Thank you so much! This is exactly the info I was lacking, and which was preventing me from performing many experiments I've seen here and other channels. I now feel confident in doing the NO -> NO2 vid you posted. :-)

  • heheh, that´s nice to hear!

I think the nitric acid substitute will be the next thing I upload =)

  • maby add some sugar too, when you try to burn it

  • Uhm, I think ammonium nitrate is found in instant cold packs. Just cut them open (unused ones) and take out the plastic bag inside with ammonium nitrate :D

  • Sodium Nitrate is ok for BP but is very hygroscopic (absorbs water from air) so Potassium nitrate is preferred.

  • That´s why I´ll make a vid about KNO3 tomorrow. All I still need is potash...

  • sodium nitrate from sodium hydroxide drain cleaner and ammonium nitrate fertilizer (or instant cold pack) (: btw i got to think about this... if you take ammonium nitrate, and then sodium chloride... into water.. both... wtf will happen? ammonium chloride and sodium nitrate or just a mix of them both.. oh yea it would be hard to seperate :S

also.. to make Potassium Nitrate, you can add NaOH and potassium carbonate into water, to get potassium nitrate or electrylyse KCl.. no! potassium carbonate

  • That is actually my next video: KNO3 from AN and POTASH (potassium carbonate)!

as long as both salts are soluable in water, they don´t react at all, you just get a soup of all ions.

They only react when you boil the solvent off, because there the lower lattice energy is prefered.

Your idea is very nice, but as amateur chemists we have to use simple methods, which always involve one chemical boiling of or precipitating... and it works, doesn´t it? :-)

  • oh.. i thought you meant you would buy potash soda.. they sell that shit in USA D= i found a instant cold pack with some pure ammonium nitrate in.. about 50% price as the other stuff :D seems that drug stores puts shit in while sports stores just leave them laying around in their store.. with pure ammonium nitrate in ^^ i hope i get to make TATP today.. ill wait about 30 minutes to see if my mom will be home.. because that is a death bust if its a bust o.o takes a few hours to make (:

  • lol gl, hf and don´t blow up yourself :P

btw: as promised, I´ll mention you in that next video because you posted the KNO3-idea!

  • thanks :D wow when i think about it.... making potassium chlorate is really easy.. ill need a few 9volt batteries, some copper wires (have em) a place to put the thing (outside?) and then time and ofc KCl but idk when the solution of potassium carbonate is converted into potassium hydroxide..

  • lol @ autofocus. ^_^
