have you ever been in an underground coal mine, do you understand much about methane buildup and drainage, how long it takes, coal oxidation and all the other gases involved in a recovery ,,,,,,,sometimes its better to let go then kill more people ,,,im an underground miner ,,,,and its nothing like cooking a chicken ...
The soldiers of war who died in afghanistan, iraq etc, were brought home in honor. The pike disaster, only goes to show how advanced we really are in solving these kinds of problems. Cant we do some lateral thinking and create multiple holes on the way to the shaft to let some of the pressure of the gases out. Like poking a hole in an oven that didnt pop. generalgrevas there are always ways around doing stuff going into that mine is only held up by health and safty regulation witch as you would no its almost wrong to go to work now with how bad there getting. as a new zealander i would go down in a heart beat for the familys and im sure id have an army of new zealanders behind me..... what ever happen to the number 8 wire saying we can do any thing as a country
@ss80496 stop ur bullshit now, you know you actually wont go down. if the rescuers did go down, any of those 3 explosions thats happened wouldve wiped them out, along with the poor miners already inside. even the miner's families have now said that the police made the right choice to wait as they didnt want to sacrifice any rescuers for nothing. number 8 wire doesnt work for explosions in your face unfortunately :P
@ss80496 im more kiwi then the next person but less than the previous, i dont care how big you think you are and how much number 8 wire you have, 99 percent of us would have dropped our balls at the entance to that mine if given the opertunity to go in there & retrive those men!!! & your number 8 wire your so pround of would have been used to drag your courpse out with so how about appreciating the people in the position that have to make the tough decissions we dont have 2 & show some respect
all you people that moan about the rescuers not going in i have a question for you ...........WOULD YOU HAVE GONE INTO THE MINE TO PULL OUT THE LOST MINERS ???? and added to the death toll ? esp when it exploded again like they feared it would? have all the air sucked out of your lungs as it went boom ?? feeling the flames flash past your head as it burnt your lungs from the inside ????? show some respect. what gives you the right to critisise the rescue efforts when the miners families are not?
2/ it would explain why the mine filled up so fast for the 2nd explossion............peter whittal, you are a extremely strong man of great integrety, you kept the nation informed with everything , despite how hard things were for you. your communication was beter than the coverage of the christchurch earthquake. the nation has the utmost respect for you sir and it would be a honor to shake your hand !!! our condolances to the miners and their families , just hop the media respect you all .....
1/ has any one noticed that in the side shot drawing of the mine that peter whittall was using to show us where they think the explosion happened, there is a fault line ?? has any one thought that maybe in the earthquake that rocked christchurch, a rupture in the coal seam occured allowing gas th come up from lower reaches (after all we do get gas feilds in the ground) ,and when the miners reached that point the gas just filled the mine???
29 miners lost there life...to me thats fucking stupid...man...sumtimes i just wish i could make the families of these people not feel so bad, kuz ive never experienced sum1 close to me die, and in fact im all teary eyed just thinking about it...my heart goes out to all the families and the 29 miners souls... <3
@nztramper what a thing to say, you disgust me, do you really think that rescue team would have left those men down there to perish if there had been a chance to save them. My 31 year old brother went down a mine to rescue trapped men in Bettws colliery in South Wales he died a few minutes later killed by METHANE Saftey comes first you dont risk other mens lives, I hope the rescue squad read your comments then punch your bloody lights out , you are calling them cowards. WHERE WERE YOU
My deepest condolence goes out to those affected and to New Zealand. It's a pity with today's technology we still find ourselves battling nature...but this will serve as a reminder to take absolute precautions and to better prepare for these sort of disasters.
after the first day i still feel we should of gone in there for them the simple solution to get in there is a nz army armored pizgurer 6 wheel german made vehical a driver with a bomb suit on just for added protection and a fue Co2 tanks for air supply and some supplys food and water should the worst happen stuff these stupid robots me personaly would go in there in a heart beat the familys shouldnt have to wait RIP to the miners that lost there lives
@bbvoncrumb no shit there were two miners on there way back when the first explosion happend thats when it got dropped or left behind, you can see the helmet in this video, stop being a dick head also 98% methane cant explode
@KFCmaori ur a legend bro. R.I.p. Miners you have made all people around nz to take a step back and see how valuable all things are. And also around the world. Rest in Peace
@MTERM775 oi. piss off oi this is devastating! oi you feed them starvin kids only to help them grow up boys turn into rapists and the women refuse to be given med advice/help on contraceptives and end continue to get preggo and get aids and all that. and we're supposed to feel sorry for the crying malnourished fly munchers?
I don't care if they are 'presumed' dead but that word 'presumed' is just another version of "They are goners and its too risky for our rescuers"( Yes, its risky for the rescuers I know that already!) but I hate it when they 'presume' that people are dead cause they can't find another way to rescue or find them.
@MTERM775 the "starving children dying" headline died years ago. The media just doesn't care about that. Everyone knows its happening and hardly anyone is helping it. This on the other hand is new news.
all those who think this is funny should have got a touch of the agony of those miners. there is a time for jokes but if people think this is the time ... man, they are not even human.
Not sure if anyone else has thought of this. But I've done a lot of research into this mine explosion. The miners helmet with the lite still on, was believed to be the helmet of on of the miners that escaped. But in the second on air safety briefing where they demonstrated the safety features of which the miners carried. They explained that one of those lights last for 12 hours on the dimmest setting. So how was it still running 4 days later?
That helmet has serious damage - oh god I hope it was quick for all of them. My heart goes out to all the families. Lawrie, Zen Drew will never be forgotten. Flags flew at half mast today across Australia and we were all gut-wrenched for you all.
I honestly cannot believe people will sink this low and try to make this situation as a joke. This sickens me. At least that the human decentcy and keep your sick thoughts to yourself. This is a very disastrous event that claimed the lives of 29 men and pretty much destroyed many more lives. My thoughts go to those miners, their family and the community.
What is the benefit of saying "they should've done this or they should've done that..' and arguing it? It is part of the grieving process to feel anger, but how come all of a sudden everyone is a mining expert.... some things in life are very cruel, but there is no going back, only forward! There are alot of people affected by this & the only thing that will heal the wounds is time! So get off your soap boxes and stop arguing about how it should've been & be grateful it wasn't you down there!
@darkskoliro This wasn't a recovered recording, this was wireless, sending it to the people controlling it from underground.. -.-' show some respect for them.
A robot had to be sent over from america which took even more time, what i dont get is why not ask a uni. i';m sure NZ is full of robot prototypes uni of canty would have been fucking delirious to help. but no, it's apparently easier to waste time and money and work with american machinery... am i the only one who got pissed off at that?
Rubbish, Hftm69. Flickyhecky's right. The original methane danger was gone five days ago with the original explosion. Five days leading up to the second blast, mine management could have had the rescuers in and out before the methane reached it's second critical level. They are equipped to face toxic gas, cave in etc. and know the risks associated with their job, just as the trapped miners were expected to do. Mine management did nothing.
@darkskoliro wow. funny guy. 29 miners died, one been a relative and ur talking about fucking a video game camera compared to a fucking robot seeing if people are alive, it doesnt have to be flash to see if some ones alive so STFU and FUCK off you nerd
@TheTrueBlueBrizze Actually I was talking about my RC that came with the prestige edition of black ops which is a real rc car....Sorry for you loss btw....didnt mean to offend anyone?
@darkskoliro dude... to far. i get where your coming from but , take everything into account, lighting, dust, rocks, everything, lens, so i mean camera maybe better on ground , but under it? doubt it
My condolences to the people of New Zealand, you have lost, in a country where loss is immense. Perhaps, in part, the memory of those you have lost should serve to remind those countries where life is cheap, that they live in a time before now.
As a Saffa, we lost one of our own down there. I also know that he was a man amoung New Zealand men. They lived together, he died with them, rugby is what takes them to heaven, may they play the greatest game on earth for ever. Amen.
Haven't the NZ rescue teams heard of breathing apparatus before? Those men should have been rescued by now, but they faffed about due to health and safety, someone's head is going to roll because of this!
Do you really think losing 50+ people or risking THEIR lives is better than losing 29? If that's the case we should all get trapped in a mine and get left to die. Might as well..
@Flickyhecky Lol. Douche bag. You've got a mine that's hit an area of pressurized highly flammable gas and carbon monoxide in which there have been explosions occurring and likely reoccurring. It's a suicide mission. Protocol is to wait until the levels of gas are at a minimum without fluctuations before even attempting a rescue. The risks are too high to send in people. There's possibilities of area collapsing and further explosions. Why waste more lives. Educate yourself noob.
@Hftm69 ah forget about him, he's probably never worked a hard day in his life. i was thinking though, serious idea, space suits! space suits bro! they would be totally ideal. rescuers would benefit greatly from them, have them blokes outta there in no time!
@TySpoonz oh stink yeah i forgot about the whole zero gravity thing as opposed to here, but they would be pretty cool though, maybe they ought to modify them for more intense situations here back on the earth etc.
To those questioning the actions of the rescue team, think how senseless the added deaths of that team would have been, but also how helpless they might be feeling at not being able to get in to rescue their mates. As a coal mines rescue team member, I can't begin to imagine how hard this would be for these guys and think that the 'average uninformed punters' who like to pass judgement and make comment need to pull their heads in, show some respect and compassion for that whole community.
@bustone1 so agree with you, my brother lost his life down a mine trying to save other men, he was 31 with two children , methane gas ended his life in minutes. My heart goes out to the rescue team it would have been hell for them. I am originally from South Wales uk I hate the sound of the sirens when there has been a pit disaster worst sound in the world. My heart goes out to you all.
@gdogau ...where is god??? in heaven of course silly. Your the one thats brainwashed in not believing there is a god. Science only goes so far then comes god, think we all know that. My children are not poor for believing in the Lord, but theres no point in arguing further with you cos some of us have to go to hell aye. I know where i'm goin, i dont need to be a proud stubborn ass in this life only to get tossed overboard at the end of the day. Cya
All you guys need to hush up!!! Ok its been done there is no-one to blame it happened!!! we as kiwis should be thinking about there families!! not argueing over whos to blame as far as im concern they did the best they could..... do you really think the CEO would of made a decision to harm these men????????? & put others at risk?????... it is so sad what has happened but these men should br remembered, not argued about!!!
There was nothing they could do to stop that explosion. And if you lived over here and watched all 4 news broadcasts then you will know that the explosion was due to the methane and carbon monoxide build up underground. Sending the team down there would have only led to 16 more deaths. Stop attacking the people who did what they could and have some sympathy for those who have lost their loved ones. Its a very quiet and dark night for the whole of NZ.
Why are you both fighting. The real tragety here is that 29 people lost their lives. I don't think that you're respecting their memories very much by arguing about god, beleive in him or not it's not good to question anothers beleif. These miners are a great loss. We should be paying our condolences not arguing.
omg you guys are having a agruement over god when 29 miners have lost their lives today. Who cares about regional at this stage, we're all kiwis and we have to stick together through this dark time. RIP Pike River Miners
@KSMoore2010 "Who cares about regional at this stage" ...Haha douche bag. You should join D.N.A (National Dyslexic Association). R.I.P Miner dudes...
@IrishManInParis They are dead. If they weren't killed during the explosions, they have suffocated. Hope is great. False hope, not so great. R.I.P Miner dudes...
@KSMoore2010 What the hell do you mean "stick together"? 90% of the people watching this video have no relation whatsoever to any of the miners. Why do THEY need support? Yes, it's sad. But that 's it.
Robot here, robot there we don't have the technology. This isn't a military propaganda and Hollywood brainwashing movies as far as I understand one broke down then got restarted and run out of batteries so there you go with the high tech bullshit. Those people down there died because something went seriously wrong! How come that the sensors didn't pick up the dangerous gases build up?Were there sensors to monitor the air or did the mine save 2 cents on them?If there were sensors what went wrong?
@kiwiterran1 Yes but the robot doesn't work by itself and it cannot be operated at a safe distance from the mine. If they were using the robot and the mine exploded like it did today. People would have been hurt or worse.
@kiwiterran1 Obviously. But could they do it from a SAFE distance. No otherwise they would have done it ASAP. Why do you think they had to do all those test? Go back to your cave troll

The moment you except the employment conditions of any mine
sadly you are willing to except its dangers. The government stopped
looking for these guys, the bodies probably have decayed by now.I
have a friend who deals with dead bodies on a daily basis he,s in Brisbane where I spent the last few days with
him and his wife dealing with the flood victims collecting them after they been found ,he was hardly home.
The miners one way or another are buried, may they rest in peace,Build a massive

@ss80496 stop ur bullshit now, you know you actually wont go down. if the rescuers did go down, any of those 3 explosions thats happened wouldve wiped them out, along with the poor miners already inside. even the miner's families have now said that the police made the right choice to wait as they didnt want to sacrifice any rescuers for nothing. number 8 wire doesnt work for explosions in your face unfortunately :P

all you people that moan about the rescuers not going in i have a question for you ...........WOULD YOU HAVE GONE INTO THE MINE TO PULL OUT THE LOST MINERS ???? and added to the death toll ? esp when it exploded again like they feared it would? have all the air sucked out of your lungs as it went boom ?? feeling the flames flash past your head as it burnt your lungs from the inside ????? show some respect. what gives you the right to critisise the rescue efforts when the miners families are not?

2/ it would explain why the mine filled up so fast for the 2nd explossion............peter whittal, you are a extremely strong man of great integrety, you kept the nation informed with everything , despite how hard things were for you. your communication was beter than the coverage of the christchurch earthquake. the nation has the utmost respect for you sir and it would be a honor to shake your hand !!! our condolances to the miners and their families , just hop the media respect you all .....
generalgrevas 1 year ago
1/ has any one noticed that in the side shot drawing of the mine that peter whittall was using to show us where they think the explosion happened, there is a fault line ?? has any one thought that maybe in the earthquake that rocked christchurch, a rupture in the coal seam occured allowing gas th come up from lower reaches (after all we do get gas feilds in the ground) ,and when the miners reached that point the gas just filled the mine???

I don't care if they are 'presumed' dead but that word 'presumed' is just another version of "They are goners and its too risky for our rescuers"( Yes, its risky for the rescuers I know that already!) but I hate it when they 'presume' that people are dead cause they can't find another way to rescue or find them.
Blueknightex 1 year ago 2
@CoinDl probably..or maybe some oxygen got inside the mine that reacted with the gas and made fire causing another explosion...

Flickyhecky 1 year ago
Do you really think losing 50+ people or risking THEIR lives is better than losing 29? If that's the case we should all get trapped in a mine and get left to die. Might as well..
HyperCam3Vids 1 year ago
@Flickyhecky You really have no idea.
ChrisPlugged 1 year ago
@Flickyhecky Lol. Douche bag. You've got a mine that's hit an area of pressurized highly flammable gas and carbon monoxide in which there have been explosions occurring and likely reoccurring. It's a suicide mission. Protocol is to wait until the levels of gas are at a minimum without fluctuations before even attempting a rescue. The risks are too high to send in people. There's possibilities of area collapsing and further explosions. Why waste more lives. Educate yourself noob.
Hftm69 1 year ago
@Hftm69 ah forget about him, he's probably never worked a hard day in his life. i was thinking though, serious idea, space suits! space suits bro! they would be totally ideal. rescuers would benefit greatly from them, have them blokes outta there in no time!

@KFCmaori Space suits weigh about 90 kgs man, they aren't very useful in earths gravity.

To those questioning the actions of the rescue team, think how senseless the added deaths of that team would have been, but also how helpless they might be feeling at not being able to get in to rescue their mates. As a coal mines rescue team member, I can't begin to imagine how hard this would be for these guys and think that the 'average uninformed punters' who like to pass judgement and make comment need to pull their heads in, show some respect and compassion for that whole community.

maryaaronful 1 year ago 2
There was nothing they could do to stop that explosion. And if you lived over here and watched all 4 news broadcasts then you will know that the explosion was due to the methane and carbon monoxide build up underground. Sending the team down there would have only led to 16 more deaths. Stop attacking the people who did what they could and have some sympathy for those who have lost their loved ones. Its a very quiet and dark night for the whole of NZ.
