  • Nice but give me Scotto!

  • Freni has the exact Puccini's voice ! She can sing the 3 parts of Il Trittico ! She IS the Mimi of the 20th century ! She is also a great Liù ! Here she absolutely GREAT

  • absolutely one of the best performances of this opera I've ever heard-- orchestra, chorus, principals-- all are first rate.

  • STUPENDA!!!.

  • Mirella Freni is a Goddess! This is the best recording of this scene! Her voice was the one Puccini had in mind when he wrote all of his operas!

    TUTTO CUORE grazie a PUCCINI

    Comunque sempre mitica Mirella :-)

  • Inimitabile Freni: Suor Angelica e Madama Butterfly sembrano composte per lei!

  • The photo accompanying this excerpt is of Geraldine Farrar, the American soprano. Sadly, she never recorded any music from "Suor Angelica" after it's Met premiere.

  • She was continually asked to sing Angelica and Butterfly on the stage, and she refused. I know from a good friend who's worked with her, that she felt Butterfly would have taxed her voice, and she wanted a long career singing at maximum level. Her response to singing the role of Angelica on stage was that she "would never be able to sing through the emotion of losing a child- she would have lost control". She's a special person who's had a very difficult personal life- the loss of her husband

  • her first husband at a very young age, an emotional breakdown as a result, the death of her second husband, the wonderful Ghiuarov- and still she managed to give the world the finest Puccini singing we've known, and she never let it show.

  • These happenings are the reason why she sings the way she does. Her voice is full of emotions, pain, love, happyness, sadness... marvelous.

  • What a beautiful comment. I know what it means to sing a role that is so emotional that you don't want to sing it if it means to close a personal connection.

  • this is way better than the version of Scotto .. of the same scene.. .

  • Vocally, in terms of technical strength and health it is yes, but Scotto's mastery of this scene is in her dramatic and visual interpretation. It's unsurpassed, as are many of her other dramatic readings. It's usually a good idea to be more specific when making comparisons between singers. Both of these great artists have an equal share as Puccini interpreters.

  • Listen Andante, I do not need instructions from you on how to make comments. Freni is superior in this. vocally and musically she is superior. Scotto is convincing dramatically but it is hard to listen to so much strident, white, hard singing, and call that "beautiful" The singing out of the side of her mouth, does not fit the character of Angelica either. This detracts fom the "drama" Scotto was by this time a seriously flawed singer.

  • I don't think you need instructions from me either. You're doing just fine.

  • no wonder scotto's senza mamma always makes me cry.

  • Grazie!

    Saluto Walter

  • Mi piacio molto del tutto it trittico, specialmente Il tabarro e Suor Angelica.

    Questa opera e cosi unica!

  • Straordinaria voce e magnifica interpretazione!

    Grazie Walter.

  • BTW, can you post "Senza Mamma," or the confrontation scene with Elena Suliotis? I wonder this aging soprano can do in a contralto role like the Princess?

  • It would have been better if she had not recorded it, every note was in a different position! it was still recognisable as Suliotis, and relatively 'fresh' sounding too, but all over the place technically, god only knows how many takes they had to make! Alongside Freni's perfectly conserved voice and complete all round command it was even more shameful! At moments I was blushing for her!

  • Mirella Freni as Suor Angelica... Why in the hell didn't they think of this sooner??!!!
