  • I listen to this at least once a day.

  • great music sting

  • dove si può trovare questo concerto?

  • Cool !!

  • great saxo

  • qualcuno sa in che tonalità è la canzone?

  • Who have the tab of this song???

  • I remember exactly the moment i watched this back in 2000!!! What a memorable performance!!!!

  • For goodness sakes, this sounds almost Brazilian, especially with the nylon string, not to mention the chord voicings Sting is using. Don't be trapped into thinking this arrangement is rock simply because it may be marketed as such!

  • What about any of this sounds like rock music to any of you? This arrangement is a pop ballad, and in that sense is very similar to jazz. I think too much emphasis is being placed -- by many of those commenting on this vid -- with the way Sting is marketed (as a "rock" musician) at the expense of what his music sounds like, which in this case is little or nothing like rock.

  • Sting is a genius!

  • WHAT A BEAUTIFUL VOICE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Just listened to Branford Marsalis speak at a conference. What an artist. He even says he is a student of music still even though he is one of the top in his area. He is someone who is genuinely passionate and curious about his field. God bless him!

  • ah so good

  • Man Marsalis and Sting together alone like this what can better?

    Just beautifull

    Regards

    Mario

  • Man Marsalis and Sting together alone like this waht can better?

    Just beautifull

    Regards

  • eine klampfe, eine stimme, ein sax. jede menge impliziter time, ein paar angesägte akkorde, das original immer im hinterkopf, frei im raum schwebend und dennoch präzise und transparent... einfach genießen...

  • is...........magic...................

  • Sidney Bechet is so overrated. I love the soprano saxophone and I cannot listen to him because of his stupid vibrato. Listen to Johnny Hodges play soprano, unfortunately he quit when he became the lead alto player in Ellington's band but it is killing.

  • Awesome !!!

  • Branford's accompaniment on this song is simply amazing. The solo is so good it hurts. Fantastic performance.

  • @aansar You should hear Branford when he really gets going, notes fly everywhere! And even then he still manages to make it innovative, soulful, tasteful, all those kinds of things. I was lucky enough to see him live in 2010 :D I agree though, this short solo here is really melodic and catered very nicely to the song and the audience

  • This is a jazzy feel and I like it 10 years after it still looks good!

  • Sting's stupidly high individual voice and Branford's killing soprano playing = multiple eargasm.

  • Do not ewen try to comment on Bradfurds background. He is the jazz-history with Bird-Miles-Lester Young-Sonny Rollins-Trane.

  • Stupenda :-)))

  • branford marsalis is NUTS!!!! and btw my name is Marsalis!!

  • I feel that they put on a much better performance of the song at the AIDS support concert in the 80's.

  • grandes, muy muy grandes

  • exceptionnel, mériterais d'être plus connue

  • O incrível é que o Branford Marsalis se coloca muito bem na canção, não chama atenção demais e melhora muito a música!

  • To say a Jazz musician only plays jazz is laughable and ignorantly ridiculous.

  • @MattieSongbird there are plenty of musicians that play only jazz

  • @aaronchasemusic I can see you're point of view. There are many musicians who quite literally only play "jazz". However, in my opinion, a true jazz musician is first and foremost a proponent of Music itself, in all it's colors, shapes, and sizes. And a musician who can encompass and embrace the vastness of Music herself, is a Jazz musician in the Truest sense.

  • @MattieSongbird If a person is equally versed in all genres and styles of playing, calling them a "Jazz Musician" would be miss leading. A "Jazz Musician" is obviously someone who specializes in Jazz, and SOME TIMES, I find they look down on other genres of music as "lesser" or "easier".

I agree that what makes a good musician is loving music in all it's colors, shapes and sizes, but still there is a tendency to favor one genre over another. But that is what makes the world of so diverse.

  • @aaronchasemusic excellent points!

  • @MattieSongbird but i agree with everything you are saying!!

Unfortunately it is a very common thing (at least from my experience) to find jazz musicians that think they can play any style, but can't play rock music (for example).

And it's because they think rock music is "easy" to play and there for they don't have to work on it.

Any one with an ear could hear the difference from a rock player to a jazz player.

But there ARE jazz musicians that are also great at rock music!! it's just rare

  • @MattieSongbird Actually VERY well said !

  • of course they're going different ways with the melody, it's called improvisation, and this is improvisation of the highest order. and saying that branford marsalis only concentrates on one style of music is pretty scary ignorance as well. just listen and learn...

  • @mikedgermany, what about his brother?

  • @mikedgermany Branford's brother Wyton, stoped playing with him once he "sold out" and started playing with non-jazz musicians, you don't need to be a pure jazz fan to apreciate his ability to improvise around Sting's clasic. colaborations like this can expand the jazz fans base, which is good. People will rediscover Trane and Miles along with Sydney Bechet, master of the soprano sax

  • Actually he plays jazz and classical, he isn't just a jazz sax player. He is incredible........I think it sounds awesome and he has an incredible sound even if you don't agree. Remember, we all have opinions and just because you have one it doesn't make you right and everyone else wrong.

  • el buen gusto en su máxima expresión

  • el buen gusto musical en su máxima expresión!

  • Beautiful soprano playing Branford!

  • wow - it's crazy :-)

  • T AMO BRUNEXB

  • cristo santo. q dior te bendiga sting.

  • dior bendijo a brandford con ese talento jovencita!!!

  • Now that clearly the Police are over (again), this makes me long for the days of The Blue Turtles band that Sting had together. Sadly Kenny Kirkland is no longer with us, but the live sound Sting had with Branford, Omar Hakim, etc. was excellent. It's sad to see him make an album like Sacred Love.

  • Muy bueno

  • Beautiful

  • magica

  • Beautiful!!! But my favorite still performed by the Police, (meant to be Rock /power mixed with emotions:).

Moon on Bourbon Street played by Branford (Blue Turtles) and Sting voice was amazing!!

  • this is unbelievable! i heard them play this at live aid and it blew me away! Branford Marsallis is fucking unreal!

  • the best version of Roxanne!! just in my opinion!!!!!

  • Noooo is a yamaha r62, a vintage sax of yamaha saxes (1980-85)

    Great Brandford!!!

  • you can find brandford in his own project:buckshot lefonque....

    what a soprano sax solo...

looks not easy to play this song with a guitar ... ;-)

  • @ndongousman

Actually - Buckshot Lefonque is a group Branford pioneer only for a short time during the early 90s. However Branford has lead his own quartet since 1984. They have released numerous albums (ie. Scenes in the City, Royal Garden Blues). He has also made numerous recordings with his brother Wynton, many of which are excellent jazz tunes. I highly recommend looking up his music. He is a talented jazz musician!

  • so...?

  • @ndongousman

    so:

"I highly recommend looking up his music."

  • This is fantastic. Thanks for posting. I miss these two performing together. It was a great time back then.

  • 2 greats

  • I love Sting!

  • I can't get over Branford's take on this song. It always amazes me when a musician takes a song and truly makes it his own. FANTASTIC!

  • branford is the one!!

  • Sting is great artist

  • Best version of this song ever!

  • It is a Selmer Mark VI. According to Branford, who told me in person, it is the only Mark VI with a curved neck.

  • There are other Sop VI with curved necks!

Also Brandford,I really think that whatever he plays,,it will sound amazing!

    He is a fantastic musician!

So him and Sting, together just a beautifull version of Roxanne! Thanks for sharing this video!

  • does anyone knows what kind of soprano sax Brandford plays? His sound is just.... amazing!!

  • The sax is a soprano say. It was very popular to use in pop music in the 80's and 90's by the likes of Sting. Hope thats helps.

  • lol, I know it's a soprano... I just want to know the brand. Thanks for your answer, but you've told me nothing new.

  • It's a Selmer Mark VI Soprano, which were manufactured from 1954 right up to 1985.

  • I wonder if Sting might give me lessons on how to be him............

  • I am very fortunate to have met Branford in person

  • Mesmerizing

  • Why do you have to share your stupidity with the rest of the world??

  • There is a reason that so many great musicians play with Sting. While he may not be a great instrumentalist, he is a great band leader and songwriter. I'm not a massive Sting fan, but I accept those things as true. Why should jazz musicians be considered "high-art". Is it to make those who listen to it feel above other forms of music?

  • I believe high-art is on high when a person skilled enough to create high-art has done so. There are jazz musicians, classical musicians, rock musicians, and musicians across the genres that do not create high-art. Great art is only created by great artists, and great artists who wave their great art over peoples heads in an arrogant way are not truly great artists.

  • he's a damn good bass-player, don't underestimate him

  • sovie is sad.

  • Was ein alberner Kommentar

  • One of the best things ever recorded. PERIOD.

  • Sting is one of the few pop artists that know what musicians to ask for saxophone solos:

    JAZZ IMPROVISERS BABY

    Marsalis rocks ^^

  • FANTASTIC...!!!

  • Amazing. Top top top.

  • branforrd MY GOD!!!!!!!!!! he is the man

  • He sure is! I LOVE this version, justy because of him. Anybody knows if this version is on a CD__?

  • WHOAAA?!?!?!?!

  • I know many people have commented on Branfords playing on this song but MAN!! his playing is AMAZING!! The Tone!!

    Appreciate the upload

  • awsome

  • bellissima versione. quasi quasi sopporto il suo narcisismo.

  • Preparati ed ispirati....

Un piacere da vedere ed ascoltare.

  • just take everything off and leave d sax solo for me,awesome performance...

  • beautiful, thanks for posting

  • wow ........goose bumps

  • Riesce ad emozionarmi in qualsiasi versione lui la canti. Grande!

  • My role models!!!

  • Sting ha il potere di creare con la sua musica un'atmosfera molto rilassante.Bellissimo e bravissimo.

  • Isso que é um belo som de sax soprano. Parabéns!!!

  • Branford's definately one of the best soprano players around, beautiful sound, amazing technique

  • I quoteth Chris Rock:

"put a dick in the ear! dick in the ear!"

  • Bravo!! stinig è mitico..

  • best version of roxanne ever! Branford kills tha shit!

  • Branford Marsalis - sweet skills!

  • That was for JurgenKraut. I thought that replys are usually close to the other comment.

  • Man... you made me smile with this one.

  • Gorgeous velvety sax tone.

  • Que coisa linda!

  • How could you compare Branford and Kenny G? Open your ears man

  • Uhh... no. Kenny G was checking out Grover. Branford was greatly influenced by the great Cannonball. Do some research. Kenny G doesn't even belong or come close to Branford.

  • @m1j1r It's not a question of belonging or coming close: Kenny G is not a saxophonist, very simple...

  • @m1j1r I feel Sidney Bechet was the greateat soprano player ever. He recorded mostly trad/dixieland jazz in the late 20's and 30's

  • @m1j1r

What you talking about ? kenny garrett is HEAVY . let there be no doubt

  • no sabés nada burro jajajaj

  • Branford Marsalis is the king of the saxophone

  • Love Branford Marsalis !!! This song is beautiful.

  • Same Live between Sting & Brandfort as july 13th 1985 at Wembley Stadium for Live Aid...

    DUO INCROYABLE

  • come back branford, cool sting.

  • What an incredible performance! Sting and Branford just like they were in 1985 for the Dream of The Blue Turtles album. Thanks!

  • ya Roxanne with Branford is another music

  • Roxanne with Marsalis is another thing!

  • beautiful version.

  • Branford's soprano playing is beautiful... just thought one can never write this line enough times.

Oh, Sting's also not too shabby. :-)

  • Branford's soprano playing is beautiful!
