For goodness sakes, this sounds almost Brazilian, especially with the nylon string, not to mention the chord voicings Sting is using. Don't be trapped into thinking this arrangement is rock simply because it may be marketed as such!
What about any of this sounds like rock music to any of you? This arrangement is a pop ballad, and in that sense is very similar to jazz. I think too much emphasis is being placed -- by many of those commenting on this vid -- with the way Sting is marketed (as a "rock" musician) at the expense of what his music sounds like, which in this case is little or nothing like rock.
Just listened to Branford Marsalis speak at a conference. What an artist. He even says he is a student of music still even though he is one of the top in his area. He is someone who is genuinely passionate and curious about his field. God bless him!
eine klampfe, eine stimme, ein sax. jede menge impliziter time, ein paar angesägte akkorde, das original immer im hinterkopf, frei im raum schwebend und dennoch präzise und transparent... einfach genießen...
Sidney Bechet is so overrated. I love the soprano saxophone and I cannot listen to him because of his stupid vibrato. Listen to Johnny Hodges play soprano, unfortunately he quit when he became the lead alto player in Ellington's band but it is killing.
@aansar You should hear Branford when he really gets going, notes fly everywhere! And even then he still manages to make it innovative, soulful, tasteful, all those kinds of things. I was lucky enough to see him live in 2010 :D I agree though, this short solo here is really melodic and catered very nicely to the song and the audience
@aaronchasemusic I can see you're point of view. There are many musicians who quite literally only play "jazz". However, in my opinion, a true jazz musician is first and foremost a proponent of Music itself, in all it's colors, shapes, and sizes. And a musician who can encompass and embrace the vastness of Music herself, is a Jazz musician in the Truest sense.
@MattieSongbird If a person is equally versed in all genres and styles of playing, calling them a "Jazz Musician" would be miss leading. A "Jazz Musician" is obviously someone who specializes in Jazz, and SOME TIMES, I find they look down on other genres of music as "lesser" or "easier".
I agree that what makes a good musician is loving music in all it's colors, shapes and sizes, but still there is a tendency to favor one genre over another. But that is what makes the world of so diverse.
@MattieSongbird but i agree with everything you are saying!!
Unfortunately it is a very common thing (at least from my experience) to find jazz musicians that think they can play any style, but can't play rock music (for example).
And it's because they think rock music is "easy" to play and there for they don't have to work on it.
Any one with an ear could hear the difference from a rock player to a jazz player.
But there ARE jazz musicians that are also great at rock music!! it's just rare

im sorry this guy is a great sax player ...but he s a jazz sax player ...this is what happens when you focus so much on only one style of music ...its like putting flowers on a rock song ..just doesnt go...hes trying to make the song sound cute while sting is blowing his brains out ..they going diferent ways with the melody
of course they're going different ways with the melody, it's called improvisation, and this is improvisation of the highest order. and saying that branford marsalis only concentrates on one style of music is pretty scary ignorance as well. just listen and learn...
@mikedgermany Branford's brother Wyton, stoped playing with him once he "sold out" and started playing with non-jazz musicians, you don't need to be a pure jazz fan to apreciate his ability to improvise around Sting's clasic. colaborations like this can expand the jazz fans base, which is good. People will rediscover Trane and Miles along with Sydney Bechet, master of the soprano sax
Actually he plays jazz and classical, he isn't just a jazz sax player. He is incredible........I think it sounds awesome and he has an incredible sound even if you don't agree. Remember, we all have opinions and just because you have one it doesn't make you right and everyone else wrong.
Now that clearly the Police are over (again), this makes me long for the days of The Blue Turtles band that Sting had together. Sadly Kenny Kirkland is no longer with us, but the live sound Sting had with Branford, Omar Hakim, etc. was excellent. It's sad to see him make an album like Sacred Love.
Actually - Buckshot Lefonque is a group Branford pioneer only for a short time during the early 90s. However Branford has lead his own quartet since 1984. They have released numerous albums (ie. Scenes in the City, Royal Garden Blues). He has also made numerous recordings with his brother Wynton, many of which are excellent jazz tunes. I highly recommend looking up his music. He is a talented jazz musician!

Brandford we forgive you for playing with this guy. He should of played with you. He would of made a great stage hand. You did justice to his cheap songs.
There is a reason that so many great musicians play with Sting. While he may not be a great instrumentalist, he is a great band leader and songwriter. I'm not a massive Sting fan, but I accept those things as true. Why should jazz musicians be considered "high-art". Is it to make those who listen to it feel above other forms of music?
I believe high-art is on high when a person skilled enough to create high-art has done so. There are jazz musicians, classical musicians, rock musicians, and musicians across the genres that do not create high-art. Great art is only created by great artists, and great artists who wave their great art over peoples heads in an arrogant way are not truly great artists.
Uhh... no. Kenny G was checking out Grover. Branford was greatly influenced by the great Cannonball. Do some research. Kenny G doesn't even belong or come close to Branford.
