  • this was released in 94 too? damn 1994 was the year for music., so many albums and singles released from 93 albums that year

  • whale music

  • gawd, this song brings back memories!!!!! So good!! Who the fuck would dislike this? idiots

  • I'm Claire!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • How can someone dislike this song??? Probably non-Canadians!!

  • who are the two assholes that disliked this? fail.

  • Try dead can dance the carnival is over

  • So beautiful. I love this kind of songwriting. I love this song. The arrangement is fantastic. Someone else covered this once. I don't remember who. But this particular song can't be butchered. It's that good.

  • @williamyanes Sarah Harmer covered it I believe....funnily enough just heard it on CBC Radio 2 last week during the morning show. she did a great job of it too, but I personally prefer the original.

  • like this my name is Claire x

  • Watch the movie "Whale Music" you bitches!!! Then you'll see where this glorious song came from ala psuedo Brian Wilson and The Beach Boys!

  • FABULOUS SONG. VERY STRANGE VIDEO.....CONGRATS ON DOING IT THOUGH.

    CHEERS.

  • It blows my mind that a little Canadian prepubecent adolescent can have millions of hits when Claire has 38K, How bleak......

  • @marxbrahms no way?

  • The video is the worst but it was 1994 and it gave some theatre students something to do. One of my all-time favourite songs. I listen, I don't watch.

  • Whoa... this video is awsome... what's the deal with these guys?

  • My name is Claire, this song is only for me. I know it, I have a special relationship with the singer ;)

  • @Marxbrahms Well, everybody in Canada does know every other person in Canada, but I'm still gonna call bullshit.

  • @gpoop23 it was a joke... thank u for being polite

  • I cant stop listening to this song...

  • love this song and the movie it was in (Whale Music) Also saw them a few times live, good times <3 ( i will not comment on the video, cuz I only listened to the music, sounds like I made the right choice by reading the comments)

  • Great song...shitty fucking video! The video "almost" ruins it for me.

  • @rob1233212006 .....look past the video you poof!!! Listen to the song and shut your pie hole! These guys were never into videos, it's about the music. But apparently you can't see past that as "the video almost ruins it for you"

  • This songs sounds a little like Imaginary lover by Atlanta Rythm Section from the late 1970's.

  • Never heard ths song b4 its my name.

  • This video had a budget of 3.2 million dollars, but I can see how they went over budget on that one part in the video, all in all worth every penny!!

  • @skutter2001 what part?

  • @zakfmt

    the ending most likely

  • This video had a budget of 3.2 million dollars but now I can see where they went way over the budget limit .all in all worth every penny!!

  • The solo kills me.

  • Amazing song, amazing video, amazing band!

    Luv 'em!

  • wtf is up with this video!?  o.0;;;

  • indeed, wtf is this! bad trips....

  • Guitar solo is fantastic for song. Nice thick sound too. there's only one 'complaint' for band, sound a little spare always to me, powerful vocals but thin band sound. At best erie, at worst watery. Awsome music.

  • @shue3303 I'm not sure if this assessment is based on all the lousy quality videos posted of this most remarkable band.. but if you ever had the privilege to see these guys live, I think you would have to retract your statement ... their instrumentation and experimentation is among the very best I've ever experienced coming out this fine country... pick up the album Whale Music or their last album that came out in 2007 or even Harmelodia! ~ and then you'll get a taste of their true magnificence.

  • I think the Rheos would be huge now. Another group way ahead of their time

  • very true.

  • One of the best songs ever recorded in the history of music - the album this is off i found in Reddingtons Rare Records,

    Price? £1.00

    Best quid i ever spent.

I'd've paid ten times that & still've been a happy camper.

Of course it helps that my girlfriend is also called Claire - i stuck this on a compilation cd i made her.

    They're a Canadian band?.....should've been massive!

Ah well....just goes to prove that the record buying public are asses! Thanks for posting this dcappe!

  • They were not massive, but they had a few thousand devoted fans. Introducing Happiness is another album with some shining gems on it

  • They had another "popular" hit with "bad time to be poor". They could have easily wrote a lot more. I really wish I could easily explain these guys...."refused to compromise" , "bad luck (see sire records deal)"....just being themselves? ya. i think that's it. The joy they got out of invention mattered more than anything else.

  • To bad this was their only mainstream hit. They're such an amazingly creative band.

  • My classic drug guilt song of 1995.

  • screw it all... this is as good as it gets! GREAT song!

  • finally found buried nineties song (its funny how sh#tty bands like metallica and pearl jam hogged the spotlight and these guys got the short end of the stick...

  • Yeah Pearl Jam is a real shitty band, millions upon millions of people the world over must be wrong on that.

  • I liked Pearl Jam but popularity means cock all. Britney Spears has outsold PJ. You gonna tell me she's superior?

  • no, just millions upon millions of people are easily amused. That's how money is made.

  • ..And Jenny, I might add that Claire was also re-released on their subsequent album called Introducing Happiness. But Whale Music was by far the best album the Rheostatics ever produced. Their last album also comes close entitled 2067. And the album Melville (a tribute to a famous Guelph guitarist - session player who's collaborated with them on many occasions) will always hold a special place in my collection as well.

  • MY NAME IS CLAIRE!

  • SO IS MINE!

  • Me too! Woot woot!

  • Snap :-)

  • I've only just discovered this band. They are so so good. Canada really does chuck out some amazing music.

I love the "double live" version of this.

  • u bet mondo.. if you like this band, see my other comments here if you want to hunt some classic albums down.

  • @mondoplaysbad so do i...i particularly like the version of Stolen Car on that same album...

  • I loved this song so much back in the day. Still do. Wonderful to rediscover it.

  • Tim Vesely sings lead on this? Wow...he's a pretty good singer.

  • i am claire!

  • 0:34 Tony Hawk

  • haha thats cool. i was looking ffor songs about claire!!!

  • Who's Claire?

  • me :)

  • if you see the CLASSIC indie movie called Whale Music, you'll know who Claire is. This song was made for this movie, and the entire soundtrack is the Rheostatics. Interestingly enough, the Rheos created 2 albums under the Whale Music title - one was a studio effort even before the movie was conceived. the second is instrumental reworkings of the 1st plus some new tracks like Claire.

  • I read the book, thanks for reminding me about the movie.

  • i'm claire!

  • My name is clare BLAH

    xP

  • :) so many claires :)

  • best guitar solo ever in this song! so random and ecclectic, yet so genius. I dug it the first time I heard (in 93!) and I still love it.

  • It's nice to know that one can explore and still find a new kick-ass band! I will look at all Rheostatics other works...very much in the same vein/mood of my own exploration.

  • These guys were absolutely loved by CBC back in the day .. and if you want to get even more underground, check out "People From Earth", the band with Martin Tielli's two brothers. Good stuff there too. Also, you searches may not lead you to the soundtrack to "Whale Music" which was also done by the Rheostatics.

  • my name is claire :D

    i love my nameeee <3

  • my name is claire too!

    such a beautiful name!

  • wahoo!! go claire!

  • my name is claire wow i have song yay to the claires of the wrld

  • This is the best song Brian Wilson never wrote.

If you haven't explored this brilliant Canadian band yet, do so. "Melville", "Whale Music", "Night Of The Shooting Stars", and "Introducing Happiness" ( which includes "Claire" ) to start.

  • I like how they say "Claire-ify me" Makes me glad to be names Clair. :D

  • wow my names Claire (:

  • my name is Claire!!!!!!!!

  • A relatively new recruit of the Rheostaics since I saw them open for The HIP. Loved Claire live!

    leq

  • I can see claire lee now haa

    thats me...

  • looks like rivers cuomo

  • The Rheos are my favorite band, and this is just the tip of the iceberg. Do your homework, and find out about these guys. They truly are amazing!

  • I'm madly in love with a girl named Claire... that I've never met. Now isn't that a bit odd?

    Estaban

  • I've had this track in my library since 1995. I think this is one of the most beautifully and brilliantly produced songs I have ever heard. The fat tones on the guitar break actually work in context within the song. Excellent!

  • Amazing song. It does have that Brian Wilson feel to it. Perfect for Whale Music, the movie.

    Always loved this song.

  • COOL

  • canada freaks me out

  • In a good way or a bad way?

  • Canada freaks you out? What about the US? Now that's friggin' scary!!

  • The US is terrifying

  • If you get a chance check out the movie Whale Music that features this song....very fitting and touching movie if you have ever been hurt by someone and find love again

  • Only found these guys today, somebody on a wilo video said to check them out, they are really good. that guy has a great voice.

  • Wait until you hear Martin's voice

  • I almost forgot this shit!

  • We live in the greatest culture on Earth here in Canada. Here's just another reason why. The Rheostatics, may they rest in peace and all grow old in comfort. Fuck the fake shit.

  • These guys are all but unheard of in the States. The content of the radio waves here is just about unbearable.

  • Canada needs a new Rheos, another band to tell it how it is up in the great white north
