sold out? nah. Seriously, how is that sold out? If you are not a Dave Fan, noone even knows a song off that album. And...Dave has said he "hates" this song. And listen to it......cute melody, but it is quite cheeky. I just hate when people say he sold out, when he has not. LILLY WHITE SESSIONS - wish he pursued that though.
This is Dave's "If I Had a Million Dollars". He needs to embrace it and/or tweek it if he thinks it's required. I kinda dig it. Don't think it's the turd he says it is.
@1223JOEY1223 No. This is a original DMB tune which was last played 10.22.93. Dave has since in several interviews referred to this song as a turd and likely to never be played ever again.. Too bad because I really do love this song and would like to see them play it again someday. Check out People People by DMB another classic long since forgotten.
Yeah, I can see why people stray from the Everyday album, but oddly enough that's why I am a fan in the first place. I saw the "I did it" video and it grew on me after awhile. Bought the album, been a fan since.
i think it is agreeable that everyday is definately a better album than stand-up, not that thats tough to do, but it has a few gems, i like angel, but its on the list of waiting to be liberated, what you are is good live espesially when they do the "pray down on your kneesmotherfucker" interloptation, everyday was good, but it lead to the death of #36, i was in hartford this year when they finally brout back so right, it was sick, i personally think before these crowded streets is thier best
In my opinion, DMB should record and release like, every song idea they've ever had. dig up all their older stuff and everything. i think it would all sell pretty well. this is amazing, it makes me sad to think that there could be soo much more great stuff that we've never heard
I can understand why Dave doesn't want to sing these lyrics in front of, say, a sold-out audience in Madison Square Garden, but the melody is so good that I think the song is salvageable. Dave could change up the lyrics a little or just offer a quick apology before he plays it, explaining that he wrote it a long time ago and that it makes him sound like kind of a jerk now, but he doesn't really feel that way. I guarantee you, no one will hate him for it.
its a shame Dave doesn't like this song, I wish I had the talent to dismiss a song like this as not up to my own standards. amazing. The sirens call from every corner.
idk i don't really dig this song lol "yeah....yeah.....yeah....yeah...." this is probably the only song of DMB's that I really dislike. That's a good thing right?
it's a shame they didn't pursue this song more. this version's good but i find the acoustic version to be where it's at. wish he never sold out with the EVERYDAY album.
I think Everyday gets a bad wrap strictly because he went electric... There are some hidden gems on that album - So Right, Fool to Think, When the World Ends and Angel just to name a few.. Check out the Fool to Think @ Benaroya or So Right at Folsom Field - These are classics my friend!
@DanielLaNoue The story I heard was his label thought that Busted Stuff was too depressing so they hooked him up with a new producer and made him create Everyday. That's why everyone waited on busted stuff. I never can remember the producers name... The guy made Dave play electric guitar and Dave admitted he was uncomfortable with it at first. Everyday turned out good in my opinion but I don't think it's cool what the label did to him.
yea I can kinda agree. So Right great song I do like it better a "Monkey Man" I really didn't like "Fool To Think" until it he went with acoutic guitar in '03. I thought "Sleep To Dream Her" was a great song off that album even tho alot of people hated.
@DanielLaNoue the songs what you are, i did it, and everyday are also good songs. i love all of the live versions of the songs he plays. like when the world ends is one of my favorite songs.
@DanielLaNoue...... I agree 100%. After a while of doing the same thing, an artist HAS to mix it up and change sounds. ALL great artists do it. Notably the Beatles. Electric was the obvious switch to go with. I personally love the acoustic way better. However, I agree that Everyday has MANY gyms on it, #1 for me being "What you Are". Awesome, powerful song.
@DanielLaNoue No. Songs like #40, #36, Typical Situation, Cry Freedom, Say Bye, the entire BTCS album, and the entire tLWS are classics. Everyday is the lowest of the low for classics. It gets a bad wrap because it's horrible. Instead of listening to Folsom Field, listen to the Stone and then listen to FTT or DOOF. No contest
I can almost guarantee he won't play this again. lol it could be, but I highly doubt it. Dave said in an interview that it will likely never be played again. He also said that if it were something other than a song, it would be a turd. it kinda sucks lol...
yeah i really l ike this one. his singing is so great in this song. live just as good as this recorded it seems from what i have watched. i dont get why he doesnt like it either. play it
I guess because Dave made it big time, he doesn't like the lyrics to this one that seem to suggest that life in the "spotlight" sucks, and is "peachy". He must have changed his mind.
I used to go to the $5 TRAX Tuesdays shows. This song was always a treat. I was always surprised it didn't make it into the DMB cannon. I still miss Peter Griesar on keys. He added such depth to the music.
does anyone know why dave doesnt like it for sure? I think its because hes speaks badly of NYC and was probably inspired to write a song about a bad experience he had there, like as if he was booed off stage or something. and now that hes obviously successful he doesnt think of NYC city as a black city that tears his soul away. "damn you big city, black city rising up around me, tear my soul away"
The only real complaint that Dave has ever said about the song is that he felt the lyrics made it seem like the band had a big ego, that he had a big head. That they were better than the rest type of feeling. It wasn't from any such experience, just he felt the wording made him feel like he had a big ego. And we all know how lazy Dave can be sometimes, so instead of new lyrics they just trashed it.
i have a recording of a dave and tim show where someone shouts, "SPPPOTTTTLIGHTTT!!" and dave goes you wanna know why i won't play it, cuz i hate it. if that song were anything other than a song it would be a big turd yeah yeah like a hot steaming turd like a pizza and beer turd. that is what that song would be. and that is why i won't play it.
i can see why they hate this song, is not them. they are playing like they always do but it just doesnt fit the bands personality. damn they are so talented
Dave hated and Loved this song at the same time... he is quoted at a showe saying that certain parts of this song makes him want to puke... having said that, I doubt they will ever bring this back... but then again it IS dmb and "You Never Know"
I personally love this song, its got a great groove and chord progression
Wow, this is a very cool song. It's so different sounding and the sax is incredible. I'm assuming this is Jeff Coffin and not Le'roi, it doesnt sound like the track Le'roi would lay down.
Damn that sucks that he hates it. It's got such a jazzy vibe, it's very refreshing to hear this kind of thing coming from the band simply because it's a different sound. It reminds me of the track dave did with Soul Live (Joyful girl).
This is a wick good song. They should put this song on the next CD. DMB should make their next CD be all the songs we enjoy live that they recorded in the studio hey were never released.
There are a lot of tools for download youtube videos and audio. There are a lot of tools for recording audio. Try searching on your search engine of choice.
Wow, I didn't even know a studio version existed. Good stuff. Not as bad as I thought it was. Haven't heard this in awhile. Might have to start a "Spotlight" chant at Fenway.
come on man.. this song hasn't been played since october of '93. not all "huge" fans are into delving though old tapes and digitizing them.. having been played 37 times "The Song That has No Name #2" has a rarely heard by most fans. I haven't heard this song in YEARS... so i'm stoked that you youtubed it...
Gotta disagree with ya brother. If we're going to throw a title around like, "huge fan," they should have heard this tune. NOT just because it hasn't been played in a while therefor making it a 'litmus test' of how LONG you've been listening. This isn't just some cast aside tune that Dave used to play. This was huge tune and one of pretty great significance especially considering WHY it's no longer played. And no, it's not because Dave or the boys think it's a poor tune. It's the meaning.
I enjoy this song.. I guess this just proves that words like "huge" are extraordinarily subjective. One may say that unless you trade shows you aren't a "huge fan". I feel that if you follow the setlists on a regular basis... you are a huge fan. In "Step Into The Light" Delancey claims that "Matthews expressed worry that the lyrics of the song, a parody of a life of fame, might be misinterpreted now[ca. 1992] that DMB was famous. He also claims to have forgotten how to play it. (pg 96-97)
Well, I kind of feel that the term "huge fan" can be defined differently and still hold true to form. Perhaps person A doesn't know as much history as person B but in the end, can't they enjoy the music just as much.
So really, what does it matter. What's the point of one-upping one another when we all have one thing in common... appreciation for the music.
Dave is Dave.. fans are fans. Let it be and embrace the positivity.
gotta disagree with you actually champ, this song was only played thirty six times and never released on an album. when tunes like jimi thing have been played over eight hundred times, it's kind of a bold statement saying that this was a huge tune? and the reason it's not played is definitely because they dislike the song it's been mentioned in several interviews and he's even mentioned that if the song were matter it would be a turd. try not to make bold statements with no facts.
Your criteria for a huge song = frequency on set lists. I contend that there's more that weighs into the significance of a song than how many set lists it appears on.
If this song was anything other than a song, it would be a turd. A summertime beer and pizza turd. Still like it though.
