The reason why the timer got to 999 is because that since it is 000 seconds, when you got the axe, the game accidently counted another second, so it changes the timer to the closest number it could find, which was 999.

Lost levels is probably the hardest mario 2d game.However you can save after each individual level which is goo but bloody hell the special(secret extras) levels that are on super mario world are hard enough though.You have to go through the star zone/path or whatever u call it.
