This is a prime example of how a remake can stand on it's own. This one used the barebones of Carpenter's genius work and added new ideas to it.

Haha, love the guy who says ban remakes when talking about a John Carpenter film, the greatest remake director OAT. The Thing and Assault on Precinct 13 are BOTH reworkings of Howard Hawks films--he produced The Thing from Outer Space and directed Rio Bravo, the source material respectively for those Carpenter films.

I haven't seen this, and I'm sure it's not good, but Carpenter made some excellent films that were also remakes.
