I disagree, ORF Germany and others shown live broadcasts many years earlier than 1979 (BBC shown very few live races in 1979.) I have many live recordings from German and Austrian TV from as early as 1969!
Obviously The Chain is a classic well associated with F1, but I did see a mock '09 intro and My Favourite Game works surprisingly well - The Chain for a new era?
True about ITV. I was mad on formula 1 when I was growing up. I remember early rounds of the 1990 season not being shown live on the BBC, not until the early European GP's did that kick in.
You people must have short memories. Before ITV took over, not every race was aired live! And it was often interrupted by other sporting events. ITV actually raised the bar for F1 coverage.
I agree with you, there were a lot of problems with BBC, races not live, just cutting to the coverage as it was going to start with no buildup or analysis afterwards, other sports taking precident.
ITV have unquestionably raised the bar, but adverts and motor racing (or any non-stop sport) will never belong together.
I hope the BBC come back with ITV standard analysis, pre and post race coverage, live races and, it goes without saying, The Chain!
ITV coverage was good, but I'm sure now that Hamilton on the scene, F1 will be a close 2nd to football. And with today's technology, all the coverage of all sports will be available simultaneously on digital (I hope) as European season qualifying will run a tight schedule with the football in May and August
my god, the ITV analysis is painful, listening to Mark Blundell. The sooner it is back on the BBC the better. ITV have been a joke, please read my comment about what the BBC did to promote formula one in the days when it was very amateur. ITV turned F1 inot the Lewis Hamilton show, the BBC covered the formula one and they did show press conference and previews but in those days they had only 2 channels, there was more pressure before the multi-channel digital tv, can't wait for 2009, no agendas
the BBC helped to make formula one a global sport in the late 70s when they started to show live races around the world in the days when you could not watch anyrace live! Everything was less professional then. Of course they only had BBC1 & 2 so some sacrifices had to be made, like with all sports, hardly any football was on TV. you both conviently forgot that. 99% of races were live, your nit picking. The coverage was simple and less biased. ITV have made formula one annoying!
ITV raised the bar after 1996, that cannot be denied. The BBC's coverage of old would be considered mediocre by today's standards, and that's all thanks to ITV. ITV invested a whole lot more into F1 than the BBC ever did.
i rememember Murray trying his best not to be biased, it was not as bad as the Lewis Hamilton show. BBC had a bit of class, ITV are all hype. Of course the coverage slowly got better because people wanted more access, technology improved and BBC could not match the offer ITV made at that time. Bernie knows it is better for F1 on the BBC, commerical breaks ruin the entertainment. Martin Brundle and James Allen did a excellent job and should be kept on but you watch how 11 years makes a differenc
PS the internet has totally changed things also, back in 1996 the internet was nowhere, the bbc had none of the tools ITV has had, if BBC had kept the contract they would have also increased the coverage
Exactly. Trying not to be biased, but you could always tell.
I'm not bashing the BBC, I'm only defending ITV. Don't get me wrong on this.
If I was a producer at ITV, I'd keep the focus on Hamilton too. Why? Well, he's young, he's talented, he drives for a British team, is challenging for the title, and most importantly he's British. He's usually in the headlines anyway because he's that exciting to watch, he's constantly under the spotlight.
Wanking Moneygrabbing Gits. Nuff said.

ITV also criticize Hamilton when he does wrong.
