We used to have one of those. The squirrels would use their back feet to hold on to the pole and then lightly rest a front paw on the bar, just light enough to not trigger it. Then they'd just sit their and shovel it in their mouth. There is no such thing as a squirrel proof feeder, just ones that slow them down slightly =P
On a seperate note, at least the squirrels can't chew a yankee flipper to pieces.
depending how persistent the squirrel is you may loose bird seed as quickly as one that wasn't "Squirrel Proof" just from the squirrels spinning around on the thing. But definitely worth it for the lol's!
Smartest squirrel story I've heard, regarding this feeder, was from my 7th grade teacher, 'bout 10 years ago, now. She had this feeder back then, and a squirrel in her yard figured out how to hang by its paws from two of the feed holes, and eat out of a third one. (I'm not sure of the placement of the feeder. That's all I was told. That, and that she promptly relocated the squirrel).
He's just working so hard to accomplish what he set out to do. Look at all the seed he's able to spill! Ah ha, nothing is TRULY squirrel proof. He's gotta be the smartest animal out there! It does need a steadier pole and to be higher from the ground.
This feeder normally works very well, but the problem with it not working here is, it is too low to the ground AND the pole it is hanging from is to thin to support it well. Hence the gyrations of the feeder shaking all the seed out.
It looks like the squirrel figured out that all he has to do is ride the thing for a little bit to get the seed to fall to the ground. Very entertaining though.
But I think there would not be so much birdseed thrown out if the feeder was more secure and not bobbing on that pole. It doesn't do that in other vids where it is more stationary.
Yes -- it's funny to watch, but I think the squirrel gets the last laugh because there's enough seed on the ground to feed him for ten days after just a few spins!
It is an awesome bird feeder. I have one, although about 15 feet off the ground. I may have to lower it so that the squirrels can have easier access to the carnival ride!
My family used to have a "squirrel-proof" bird feeder hanging from a high tree branch in the backyard. The perch was weighted so that anything heavier than a bird would seal off the birdseed. Didn't stop the squirrels; they shimmied down the cable face-first, and then dangled by their feet from the bird feeder's roof so they didn't even touch the perch. And their hands were free for eating the birdseed. That was years ago, now I wish we had caught it on video for YouTube. :-)
Looks like those squirrels are smarter then the designers of the bird feeder; they figured out they don't have to sit on the perch to get a bite to eat. Back to the design board...
they make a couple of models of bird feeders that are squirrel proof but do not spin the seeds out onto the ground like that...but those are not nearly as fun to watch!
This is a hilarious video.

I feel like the squirrel stopped trying to get the food and is instead doing that for fun. XD

It's the new thrill ride all will enjoy! The "Tilt-a-Squirrel!"

Given the amount of seed that flies out of this thing while it's spinning, it's clear that Droll Yankee built this thing just for the LOLs.

It's because they've got it on a whimpy Shepherd's Hook. When it's hung from a stout pole the Flipper doesn't fling seed around like that.

Yeah, that's basically a carnival ride for squirrels where they get to eat when it's done.
