I did a review/archive for a client for someone out of Michigan on his appeal for tax evasion. He did all that name alteration stuff too. Mentioned all his nonsense about his birth certificate. It took all of 3 hours for the research and when his appeal came up, he lost in less then 20 minutes. I think the judge took pity on him and at least let him say his piece.

I can only assume Adam waived his trial by jury. His chance at an appeal is slight unless he can show something. If anything I would appeal the sentence, as his prior conduct is what lead to the heavier sentence. That's his only shot.

Get some very good advice man. Never let the worst case scenario be a surprise. If you expect to get off and end up doing the full time, it will come like a sledge hammer to your head. So, ask the same question of as many different legal advisers as you can, whilst doing your own research as well. Read case law. Find the one that could weigh the case in your favour. Did you have a jury trial or a bench trial? You should never have a bench trial, judges don't give a shit about regular people, besides if you have a jury trial you might be able to convince at least one jury member that the law is wrong, or that the punishments are excessive or do not fit the "crime" and to vote not guilty based on that reason.
