I have this camcorder, but when I encode in Adobe Media Encoder, then upload to YouTube, it doesn't fill the player as yours does...I get slight letterboxing at the top and bottom (and the quality isn't as good as yours). If you don't mind me asking...how did you get yours to fill the screen so nicely? I'm thinking my encoding settings are off, but I have no clue as to what is best? Thanks in advance.
@vwestlife Not to sound snarky, but I did and otherwise wouldn't have asked. I was interested in encode settings that you use, but I guess from that vid you don't encode at all? Just save and upload? I would do that, but my vids are 300+mb and am not going to wait 2+ hours uploading. Thanks anyway!
@zuhloobie Just use SDcopy to attach the proper 16:9 widescreen attribute to the video. Then you can use it in any video editor and it should be properly recognized as a 16:9 video.
@vwestlife I think there's a disconnect between Canon, the Canon software (Pixela) and Adobe Media Encoder. Your method from the camera to SDcopy and uploading to YouTube does fill the screen. But I'm not happy with the upload time. Exporting the movie from Pixela to my desktop does keep the WS attributes (not exporting from Pixela does not recognize WS). Putting that export into Encoder makes it quicker upload, but it does not fill the screen. Thanks though, I'll keep searching!
@sonnetg The built-in mic has good bass response and stereo separation, but has a fair amount of hiss in quiet situations. It should do fine for recording music, but you can still experiment with external microphones to see if they improve the sound (at least on the FS200; on the new FS300, Canon unfortunately removed the external microphone and headphone jacks).
Hi,i pluged my MIX on Canon FS200,but there are many noise!!I I used a AKG 419L wirelles.I pluged the OUT from MIX to In the MIC of FS 200.What i need have to do,to elimination the noise? And how i can to control the level the MIC of Canon FS 200?
The Canon uses a microphone level input. If you try to plug a line level source into it you will get noise and distortion. You need to use an attenuation cable, also known as a "T-pad." Look up the video on YouTube called "make your own attenuation cable." The FS200 has an audio level meter on the display but I don't think it offers any way to adjust the input level, so you need one of these cables.
The FS200 does use a good sounding mic input, but the mic needs to provide its own power (such as from a battery) if needed. Canon does not supply power through the microphone jack, like the way Sony's "Plug-In Power" works.
Dynamic microphones will work fine. They do not need a power source. The Shure PG58 is a dynamic microphone.
Electret condenser microphones will need their own battery power. Most do include a battery, except some Sony microphones which expect to receive power through Sony's "Plug-In Power" microphone jack.
But, doesn't shure PG58 have a XLR "in" (i don't know how to say it in english)? How are we suposed to plug it in to the cam? (sorry for the bad english)
Do what? Most Canon camcorders have an external microphone input jack, which can be used to connect almost any audio source, such as an iPod, CD player, turntable, etc.
He vwestlife Great piece of work I have the older fs 100 that i've built a attenuation pad so i can come out of my outs on my mixer(s) for music shoots i forgot what value resistors i used but the fs 100 sounds great too It seems in the consumer electronics part of camcorders cannon is ahead of the game offering the consumer to have the capeablity to get top end audio without having to drag and sync a seprate audio track in your editor Great job cannon! and great demo vwestlife!
Hey I need help with this camera if you could offer me some. I get those vertical black bars whenever I try to upload a video to YouTube, I've tried to many things to fix this to get it into a nice 16:9 format, but nothing seems to work. Can you help me at all? Much appreciated.
P.S. When I am editing the video in Windows Movie Maker or Vegas Movie Studios, these black bars are not present.

Actually, WMG has been good to me about accepting copyright disputes. I have about half a dozen videos in which WMG muted the audio but then it was restored after I submitted a dispute and it was accepted.
Yea, they can be pretty good with resolving issues, but I found it easier just to place a note before the video saying what I don't own and who the song belongs too, and the studio who licensed the song. Tedious, but a surefire way they won't mute the video.
I submitted a Fair Use dispute so hopefully the audio will be restored soon. I only played a short clip of a WMG song but it was just over the 30-second limit.
Hey buddy - totally unrelated question, But what reason did you use to allow WMG to let you use their song? I love the way you take the time out to answer so many questions on here, and your vids have been very useful for me - thinking about getting this cam!
I filed a "Fair Use" copyright claim dispute, and WMG accepted it. The FS200 is an excellent camcorder, and Best Buy currently has it on sale for $199.99, which is a great price!
OK, I see now you're in the UK, so the Best Buy price is of no use to you, but I'm sure you can still find the FS200 on sale in the UK if you shop around!
yeah - hehe, that was gunna be my next point :P As much as I would like best buy in the UK :(
Cheers for all your advice buddy, and If you wanna see what the camera would be used for, if you've got the time check out my main channel GamingReviewsLive
Standard definition videos recorded in 16:9 on my camera come up properly as widescreen fine, odd. Strange how some people have problems with that.

@NoNeedForAcceptance The built-in mic has a little bit of background hiss, but otherwise is very good.

How is the built in mic? Is the bass response good? I am planning on buying a camera for my band live performances. Not sure what to buy..
Any suggestions?

If you plug a mic in, does it have good quality.
I'm sure it also depends on the mic quality, i'm using a SHURE PG58 professional microphone.
Thanks! UW2

So your saying I need a mic. with its own power?
If so,
all my mics have ON/OFF switches.
Does this mean it would work?
thanks so much for your reply!!
I'm planning on getting one (a canon FS200) in the next week or so.
Thanks again! UW2

ONE last question, would you perfer this, Canon, OR the Panasonic SDR-S26?Once again, Thanks so much! UW2

I haven't looked at Panasonic camcorders, so I can't help you on that one.

Tulkon 2 years ago
You need to get the Shure with the XLR to 1/4-inch cable, and then use a 1/4-inch to 1/8-inch adapter to plug it into the Canon's mic input.

Just an ordinary 1/8-inch stereo jack cable, like the kind you use to connect an iPod to the aux input of a car stereo.

Use the program called "SDcopy" or add the tag "yt:stretch=16:9" to your YouTube video.

find a program called SDCOPY, from my research seems to make the video in the desired 16:9

How did you upload it if the camcorder is in Best Buy?

It is an SD card camcorder. I took my own SD card, popped it in the camcorder to record the video, then took the card home to upload.
