I think Trey would have sung better if they all came out wearing masks like the horsemen on the cover of "FOXTROT" lp ; a great cover though , but where were Anthony Phillips,Peter Gabriel and Ray Wilson,Chris Stewart(?)John Silver(?)(rip,John Mayhew) ?!
Genesis knows they could never play this the way it should be played again. Phil had the look of "You guys done good" Is it perfect? No...but perfect in the Phish sense..I just hope the Genesis geeks "get it"
That was an excellent cover. What cracks me up is so many people there seemed to be like "What the hell is this?" You think at an event that calls itself a music hall-of-fame, that people would be knowledgeable about music? It would be like going to a literary convention, and the audience being like "Who the fuck is this Hemingway guy?"

I'm a long time (30+ year) Genesis fan - this is great! The only comment I have on the vocals is that Trey seems about half a tone out. A little more practice on the high notes would let him totally rock this!
@oldglenndog Very well put !,but , I think this song and many others by Genesis just are so "British" that an American with a southern twang just is odd,but OK !!
IF I KNEW ABOUT THIS PERFORMANCE I WOULD OF WENT TO SE THEM IN UTICA WHEN THEY JUST CAME HERE-VERY RESPECTFUL OF THEM AND GREAT OF THEM TO DO THIS OCCASION- GREAT PEOPLE THOSE PHISH PEOPLE
@johnslullaby Trey is neither Phil nor Peter, and he never claimed to be either one. Perhaps you'd have preferred a true no-talent to induct Genesis...like maybe Nickelback? If you want to hear "No Reply At All" sound like it does on the record, go buy the record.
You heard it here first. People will be talking favorably about Phish at least as long as about Genesis. Both groups are musical pioneers, and both groups keep the music honest.
@xeractus no sir, fuck you. Strawberry Fields is pure melodical genius. The intro to this song trails of into chords that aren't exactly a perfect fit. Also anything from In the Court of the Crimson King, I talk to the wind being the best example.
This song though, my favorite part is the riff at 4:21 in the studio version, such an amazing linking phrase
This is fantastic, especially the Mellotron and organ parts. I love that they took the gutsy choice of playing this song, even though the audience were probably wondering what the hell they were listening. I'll bet that not many tunes played at these induction ceremonies have been in 6/4 ;-)
Can someone tell me why they choose No Reply At All? I love Phish but the version did not work for me. So many songs that I think would of worked better for them. Now Watcher of the Skies is fantastic!!! Not an easy song to play.
You know the purpose of a tribute is to honor, not imitate! Great performance... the heart is there! he audience was mesmerized as they should be. Lovely job, nice tribute Phish!
What kind of keyboard is Page doing the Mellotron parts on? It sure looks like a Mellotron, but it's impossible for a real Mellotron to be an upper keyboard due to the tape mechanics, so it must be some kind of simulator.
@kingtarkus Good day Kingtarkus, those are Memotrons from a company called Manikin. Digital recreations. The Mellotron company is also close to finishing a digital version as well.
@satellite09 They miss the fact that they probably could never play it again due to being 70. They are on borrowed time if they want to redo the lamb live. Maybe if Phil would practice once in a while it would not be as hard to go back and do the challenging cuts of the 70's. Vocal wise Phil is never singing a lot of those songs again. His voice is gone.
@ceazea Phil has a messed up back and had to have surgery several years ago....apparently he can't play drums or piano at all anymore. I think he had the surgery after the last tour in 07. I think our hopes of a Lamb reunion tour are long over...now more cuz of that than cuz of Peter.
Genesis and Phish are my 2 favorite bands. My dad recorded this on his Shit-rect Tv DVR and i cried at the end of both performances..... This made my day/year....
Have to disagree on "No Reply" It's obvious they love "Watcher" and have practiced it thoroughly. "No Reply" sounded like they'd run it through once and let it rip. Not to take anything away from Phish. They're excellent musicians. Hearing them perform "watcher" was really cool. Takes me back to my teenage Genesis fanatic years.
Thank you for posting a good quality video of this performance. Tony Banks doesn't look too happy at watching someone else play his keyboard parts. It should have been Genesis up there! Disgusting how Gabriel has turned his back on such an incredible legacy of music.
Thank you for posting a good quality video of this performance. Tony Banks doesn't look too happy at watching someone else play his keyboard parts. It should have been Genesis up there! Disgusting how Gabriel has turned his back on such an incredible legacy of music.
@scifiwriter98 I agree. He will not embrace where he came from as easy as the others can. It was really disapointing to not see him at this event. I just hope them seeing someone else playing some old stuff on stage will get the reunion in peoples thoughts again. The ONLY thing that held it back last time was one person and we know who that was.....
As a longtime fan of Both bands, Phish IS the ultimate cover band, as evidenced by their halloween shows. Still, "Watcher" is an odd choice somehow. Trey's a great guitarist, but this is mostly keys and vocals...must've been a little strange for him. Page should've sung "No Reply." My two cents.
completely agree. trey just doesnt have the vocals for this song (and many others ha) but about the 3:30 ish mark when page joins in... that actually sounds really good. and yes, page should have sung all of no reply at all.
but the real question is, when is someone going to be opening up for phish's induction????
Amongs the "rockstars" in the audience, Eddie Vedder is the only one who looks interested, and maybe Iggy, at least knowing the song, I cant stand pathetic springsteen, and, btw, who's the black guy?
@zalpobalpo springsteen is a phan, i saw him join phish at bonnaroo last year and it was amazing! u can tell phil was keeping a big grin off his face, as well as the guy cheering next to him!
@lilcha85 a phan of phish, not of genesis, you mean, dont you? or better, not knowing genesis' stuff at all. All in all, Phish and Genesis 70-77 kick ass!
A lot of prog fans don't realize how much Genesis/Yes influence there is in Phish's early music (up through around Rift in 1993.) Most people think of them as being just a jam band, but those early albums have a LOT of 70s prog influence.
@jhillst I always thought Junta had a lot of Genesis influence, especially Esther!! It's about time a Prog band made it into the HoF!! Now how 'bout Rush,Yes,King Crimson & ELP!? Preferably b4 anymore punk & disco bands!!!
@MrGuitaRKing I couldn't imagine any of those other prog bands making it into the Hall of Fame, considering the amount of critical derision they got (especially ELP.)
Another thing you have to consider is that Genesis spawned a lot of well-known solo material from two of its members (three if you count Mike + the Mechanics), which couldn't be said about those other bands.
@joverboss unfortunately your probably right. Rolling Stone just doesn't give a shit about prog rock. That's why Rush, Yes, ELP and the like will never get their day
@jhillst They were a HUGE influence. The Genesis song "Stagnation" leaves its imprint all over the Billy Breathes album (as does the "Firth of Fifth" guitar solo on the title track's solo). And I would suggest that this tune covered here at the RRHOF influenced the Phish song "Bouncing Around the Room."
@dave21286 I can't say I see the similarity between Watcher and Bouncing.
I think Yes was an influence on Phish as well. Check out the intro to "Long Distance Runaround," where the guitar/keyboard is playing those arpeggios with the bass line underneath it...that kind of thing is all over Junta. Trey's solo at the end of "Esther" also sounds a lot like something Steve Howe could have done around the Close To The Edge period.
I and a great many happen to hold this as one of Genesis' most innovative and classic tracks. And Phish is no slouch in their compostiional approach or their ability to communicate creatively live. Watch Trey's induction speach and tell me that individual isn't THE MOST qualified in our pop culture lexicon to induct this band. I doubt there is another as devoted to Genesis as Trey in the popular consciousness.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
uh he looks like he's reading it straight off the prompter it doesn't sound genuine at all and regardless, trey does not have the right vocals for any genesis track, you can even see the members of genesis trying to not to cringe as they try to play watcher, this is just my opinion.
brilliant song choices for both time periods...u want invisible touch and thats all..thats whats so sad..1 of the more brilliant ideas ever..phish has so much courage and intellience and INTEGRITY..Case closed.....
Thanks Trey for a nice speech a great cover and for finally admitting some of your influences were ... prog! Always heard it in your music, though you often didn't fess up, certainly not in the 1990's aside from some Zappa. Now it's time to work these cannons of prog into your setlist, give more than just a Roundabout teaser and tackle the songs in your own special way. So how's about The Great Deceiver, Full Moon on the Highway, Free Hand, and Impressioni Di Settembre for your summer tour?
Phish has more musical talent than 99% of the crap out there. Take a few minutes some day to listen to Divided Sky, You Enjoy Myself, Guyute, or any of their Halloween shows.
It's a very faithful rendition, which is good, but fairly soulless, and the vocals really need someone soulful like Gabriel at the mike. However, it was decent enough and certainly better than their flaccid cover of "No Reply At All", which turned a mediocre song into a bad one. I'm still mad at PG for not showing up to even accept the damn award, let along sing one lousy song with his old bandmates.
@mtopper66 but he was "getting ready for a tour" I know it's become kind of a tradition to blow off your induction to the Hall, but after the prog genre was ignored for years, Gabriel missed a golden opportunity to take a bow as a musical originator. And to be with the rest of his mates would have been special, and a show for all the thick "music fans" who thought Genesis began with Invisible Touch. Me wonders if there's more to why PG stayed at home
@embeleshow His excuse for not showing up was just so lame. He wasn't even *on* tour, just "getting ready". It wouldn't have killed him to fly out for one day and accept an historic award, that as you say is doubly historic given the Rock Hall's antipathy toward prog. He seems to go out of his way to show up for every other award he's given. I'll bet you if Gabriel had been inducted as a solo artist, he would've shown up *and* sang.
@embeleshow I mean, I can see him being wary, as he said, about singing with Genesis live again after so many decades have passed, but he could've at least shown up to accept. Madonna showed up for hers, even though she didn't perform. It just always seems like whenever there's talk of a Genesis reunion, Peter always comes up with some "project" that gets in the way.
@embeleshow Anyways, I think Gabriel came close to his real reasons in a recent interview for Rolling Stone when he said that Genesis was like going back to school--it's nice to see the old friends, but he wouldn't want to live there. But that still doesn't explain why he couldn't show up for one night just to accept the award.
Im so proud of my Phishy, he's all grown up now. I remember when he was just a wee littly phishy...he would swim and jump...now he plays songs like "No Reply" to the music moguls. Such a good phish. I got that backwards...Phish is good! Phish is great! Phish makes me want to...ehh help me out with a rhyming word..
I can't stop replaying this on my dvr and on youtube. Phish nailed this tune! Their version of "No Reply At All" was pretty good too, but not quite like this one. MIke and Fish were really showcased with these tunes.
@ghoulhunt74 No doubt! Really thought they were going to pull off "Lamb Lies Down On Broadway" at 8, but these couple tunes just make me want that more.
@ghodbc No i have not! They did an awful cover on that song, thats it. If you can't hear how bad he sings you are not worthy of calling yourself a human.
Wow, this is a much better version than the other link. Captures the dynamics of the band much better. Had some reservations about the performance after listening to the original post but this showcases Fishmans playing much better and has much better low end...thanks so much for posting...do you have the other elements of the show? i.e. induction speech and other song?

Thanks for this. Here's hoping Phish includes this in their covers repertoire this year.

difficult song to learn...but this is the type of song Phish could write themselves...not unlike Guyute this song...

It would be nice if some one went through you tube and removed all of the crap quality posts and replace them with good ones like this.

Much better quality than the 30000 views version.

I can't stop replaying this on my dvr and on youtube. Phish nailed this tune! Their version of "No Reply At All" was pretty good too, but not quite like this one. MIke and Fish were really showcased with these tunes.
Thanks for posting!

I hope they play this on the summer tour.

@ghoulhunt74 No doubt! Really thought they were going to pull off "Lamb Lies Down On Broadway" at 8, but these couple tunes just make me want that more.

@ghodbc No reply at all was pretty good?! Are you serious? That must have been the worst cover i have fucking heard in my entire life.

@johnslullaby You've done a great job of identifying yourself as a douche.
ghodbc 1 year ago
@ghodbc No i have not! They did an awful cover on that song, thats it. If you can't hear how bad he sings you are not worthy of calling yourself a human.

Wow, this is a much better version than the other link. Captures the dynamics of the band much better. Had some reservations about the performance after listening to the original post but this showcases Fishmans playing much better and has much better low end...thanks so much for posting...do you have the other elements of the show? i.e. induction speech and other song?
