I saw it on my flight back from Japan and I liked it :) I had already read the book in Japan but the movie is funny too. tough you have to understand some Japanese cultural stuff to understand it better :)

yea... subtitles are little bit strange..Main charactor's mother doesnot say ''give up'' in Japanese. She said YOu may be fooled. I dont know but maybe because translator made it along with context of story line. Anyway I think it is natural to see attractive at foreigers for partner because people needs samething they doesnot have themselves...sorry for poor englsh.

I think the subtitles are slightly off. The mother (I'm assuming) tells Inoue's character she's been deceived not that she should give up at 0:23.

anyone wondering why they chose this guy over a better looking one? the movie is just using the most common "foreign guy in japan" look since well, they're almost all pasty, shaggy haired, needs-to-shave white guys

They chose someone who looks like the real Tony Lazlo (although the plot to the movie is fictional, it's based on a real couple - the author and her husband. Or, I should say, based on her manga series which is based on her real life with her husband.)
