  • Your comment at 2:06 was just doesn't make sence. What "chips" are you talking about. They use different "chips". Different "chips" do different things. You should research your stuff more and describe who made these "chips" and their actually quality. I do agree with alot of what you say, but there are some serious deficiencies in your video.

  • @jawsrock1 I am sorry you do not understand what I mean by chips and to be honest I do not expect everyone to know what I am taking about. Only for those who know enough. You have no idea how many message I have gotten off this video thanking me. So many do get it. Besides what you thought I was taking about potato chips

  • @maltcus Thanks for the reply back. Actually, I DO know what you mean by "chips". I know you are referring to integrated circuits. I am an electronics technician and a studio engineer, so when I was referring to different chips do different things, I was talking about different manufacturers make their interfaces and such using different integrated circuits that are designed differently...kinda like hamburgers (it's almost dinner time). They are all called the same but taste alot different.

  • @jawsrock1 He is talking about the DSP chips on the Pro Tools HD cards. They do all the processing work and handle almost all the routing functions, and that is why it is so powerful and stable. Almost like having a bunch of actual Digital Signal Processors (litterally) inside the computer. It really rocks by the way.

  • @TheProgmagog That is an insightful reply, however, he only mentions the software (which is what Sonar is and Protools is typically what home studios like what he has, uses). Neither have "chips". You are very correct that the PT HD uses their own proprietary accelerator card...and yes, it does rock. I personally plan on upgrading to the Lynx Aurora setup myself using and HDX card and PT. I will probably still use Sonar for somethings...depending on how I feel about PT.

  • @jawsrock1 If you have the budget, then go for it. If money is an issue, I predict that you will start seeing HD-Accel rigs on Ebay for pennies on the dollar. I mean, a couple years ago I saw a complete Mix Plus rig with interface and G4 going for $400. the guy must have spent towards 20k. Plus the TDM Waves stuff will go the same since the TDM architecture is about to become obsolete. I dont care that it does cause it works as it is in a big big way. Either way good luck my friend. Have fun!

  • Thanks man. Your video was very informative. I have Sonar X1 Producer but I'm a newbie and just learning. With what I want to do Sonar X1 Producer is way more than enough. By the way, how long did it take you to learn Producer?

  • YUP!!!!!! cUZ U ARE SO RIGHT FO real..I use both pro le ans Sonar and i always find myself back on the pc with sonar..Its a beast...

  • I agree with this video. I have always chosen Sonar over ProTools for computer usage. I had this discussion with a guy years ago and he laughed when I told him I was using Sonar. BUT...after hearing the finished product, he kept telling me I HAD to have been using ProTools. What a goon...I even emailed him my .cwp files to prove it. lol...he shut up after that. Sonar for me, been using it since 2001.

  • Right now I have an M-audio fast track with Pro tools SE sitting in the box. I also have a Boss-me25 guitar pedal (acts as USB interface) and that came with Sonar 8.5 LE, im just wondering what route to go down, Sonar or pro tools, im not sure which would be better or more for me I should say

  • @timcrow420 I am bias because I am a sonar user but, this is what I think. watch a lot of videos. read packaging and play around with both. The 2 versions you have are not full versions and is not the best way to compare the both. With that said I still think you mess with both and use your common sense to choose. Do not listen to what other say cause they are going to tell you to use what they use.

  • @maltcus

I hear ya, I opened up the Pro tools and im loving the SE version ill be getting my sonar 8.5le in the mail soon and ill be using both to see which one is better for me :D

  • i like your video man actually your video made decide to go with sonar. by the way do you have any tutorials i am wondering how i could mix and what kind of effects to use for backround vocals??

  • @mmmusicc777 Yes I have a lot of videos. There are kinda old. I am using sonar 7 but, the techniques are the same. Checkout my channel.

  • yo I hear you I have sonar x1 producer and it never crash on me the bigges project ive done in sonar was 35 tracks audio and midi that is a lot with a lot to be running in a home computer

  • @mmmusicc777 ya if u have a decent computer u should be fine

  • If you're in the 300-500 range all of the DAW's have about the same functionality, it's mainly a case of what you're more comfortable to work with. I use Sonar, because I love the workflow, and there's plenty of plugins, and every release of Sonar feels like it's really added something. Also when adding plugins, there's alot of great stuff you can get for not alot of money.

  • Is SONAR compatible with any interface? I have the MXL USB Mic Mate.

  • @nroblese for the most part yes. You can use anything on sonar.

  • great ending..reward for those who made it through to the end of the video

  • There isn't any comparison whatsoever in the world of PROFESSIONAL audio recording. There is a reason ProTools is the industry standard and CakeCrash isn't. ProTools is stable and reliable. Cakewalk crashes when under "pressure" and can't handle anything but small-scale projects.

  • @Autumn6 If we are comparing Pro Tools HD with HD cards. Okay I may see your point. Even though cakewalk do not crash on me. I have had some pretty big projects loaded. The only reason why I had problems because of my computer power not the program. As far as Pro Tools being a industry standard is fading. I do not care what a big major studio is using. They have the hardware to back it up. If you love Pro Tools good for you. Do not think having Pro Tools make your setup better then my Sonar

  • @maltcus yup true.i have an amd sixcore @ 3.7ghz,16gb of ram,two 1tb hdd running windows 7 and sonar x1 loading 100 track projects plus plug-ins barely use 10% of my cpu, with protools its not even 64bit max ram you ken use is 4gb

  • @Autumn6 He's pretty much saying that if you listened to the video. If you're talking Pro Tools LE, the PC version is horribly sluggish, not tuned for 64 bit versions of Windows, and is really just a bad port of the Mac version. The Mac version of LE is actually pretty decent. PT LE is nothing like PT HD.

  • A ripe subject, to be sure, but I fell asleep in the first 10 seconds.

  • @yevsterus Thanks for watching :)

  • Abit irrelevant for me. Since I plan on getting a SSD. Plus I got this incredible laptop with a broken screen. I bought so frickin cheap, the guy just wanted a quick buck. So yeah, new laptop + SSD = Very fast. This seems abit unfair too seeing the price difference.

  • SONAR AND PRESONUS IS WAY BETTER THAN PROTOOLS LE

  • thank you this was helpful

  • hey BIG GRIME like ya video and that you talk on this subject I have a recording studio my self and I have both pro tools and sonar x1, well all the vers. and people ask me what am i useing, I use sonar x1 producer because its my personal choice great work

  • @btommmm thanks it is a personal choice. I think pro tools is great. f it was not then a lot of major studios would not be using it but, they have protools HD. This video is old and was created before avid did the take over on Pro Tools.

  • that `s fine, but, you put "sonar stupid" in the end of this video,,,,

I think that is a not good comentary,

Many people use diferents programs for make music, the choice is,,, free.

the point is get a good job. not the preferences..

  • @Aguirrecords u say its not commentary but, cakewalk has contacted me and say they like my video on sonar including this one. They sent me a t-shirt, mouse pad, and other promo stuff. So that being said what you think do not carry any weight. Sure you can make good music on anything if you have the talent. Thats my point. I am not saying that sonar is the only program you can make good music on I am saying that you do not have to have pro tools. some people think I having pro tools is better.

  • @maltcus That`s fine, good for you, that only thing that I wont to say, is don`t care the program, the point is be happy whit your work, in fact, I have Pro tools 9, & Sonar X1, I make Music whit both, and they are GREAT,

I`m very happy whit the results that i have after work whit each other.

Maybe depend of the sound, or atmosphere, that you need, but, I said again, The most impotat point, for me... is the imagination, the talent!!, "Viva la creatividad, caray...",

    Have a nice day,.

  • Hey, have you guys seen the new Windows 7 equipped StudioBLADE keyboard production center? Its perfect for running all of your Windows compatible software and plugins! Check out the videos on our chanel by clicking the link below!

  • protools is a B***** to install

  • Dig the commentary.

  • This was a very good editorial. Very well done and all points were valid. I like the way you broke it down in layman's terms too. I am a Sonar user myself. I would like to throw my two cents in and say that Sonar running on two computers (Sonar and some plugins on a moderate system and a seperate workhorse computer for cpu intensive pugins) can take you very far and would be far less than even a basic Protools setup.

  • ok since the new versions came out, would you still say pro tools 9 HD is better than sonar studio x1?

  • @thojyout23 I really really love what Cakewalk has done with the Sonar X. I really haven't looked in the Pro Tools yet. I plan do a new video comparing the 2. The way computers are getting faster and faster and with the new sonar X. It will be interesting.

  • I CAN'T HEAR YOUR VOICE!

  • @realjuvelive thats funny other people can.

  • @maltcus HEHEHEHEH 10 seconds ago after your comment catch ya!!

  • PRO TOOLS HD is 192 K , cd quality is 44 k , your paying for sound quality and a more reliable system ... Thats it plus a few Bomb factor plug ins ...

But Listen ! Pro Tools LE uses R-TAS Plug-ins there ALOT better than VST plug-ins

I had sonar and acid back in the day , now i Have Pro tools LE 8 , ableton 8 , FL Studio 9.6 and Reason 5 ...

My Computer is a 64bit 12GB RAM with an Intel i7 , i Can Run ANY THING ! those HD cards run ... anything

  • @JSprayaEntertainment you can run anything those HD cards can run. I am sorry that is impossible. Okay you know that there are plugins only run on HD?. You have a powerful setup so I can't knock you. Plus those cards process the audio where your setup the computer process the audio.

  • Although, this guy here (silversunpro, I can't post the link) in his video says ProTools LE is mistakenly thought of as limited in functionality. He says it's pretty much the same functionality as HD, except that it's designed to run on a regular PC without accelerator cards. So you can get it for $300 with the interface. Then?

  • @itorres008 Pro tools Le yes a full functional unlike the sonar Le or cubase Le. However there are certain things that are still missing. Multi band compressor does not come with it I don't think. I might be wrong but last time I checked no. and oh the biggest defense I hear that you should get pro tools. Its industry standard. Ever major studio use it. You can take your sessions to the big studios. Ask your self. Do I go to major studios? I doubt it. Besides I can save as a omf file.

  • @maltcus Ok. I guess most of the big price tag is due to the hardware included...kind of a mini specialized music processing PC in a card.

  • @maltcus I AGREE WITH YOU 100% I USE A MIXTURE OF PRO TOOLS AND SONAR PRO TOOLS FOR ABOUT 5 YEARS AND SONAR SINCE 2003. AND PERSONALLY I LOVE MY SONAR I ONLY USE PRODUCER EDITION BECAUSE I WANT ALL THE FEATURES THAT IT HAS TO OFFER. NOW IF I RECORD IN SONAR AND THE ARTIST WANTS A PRO TOOLS SESSION I CAN, 1 SAVE IT AS AN AIFF FILE OR SAVE IT AS AN OMF FILE IF IM GOING TO BOUNCE IT TO PRO TOOLS MYSELF CAUSE THE OMF FILE DOES NOT EXPORT THE AUDIO BUT AIFF DOES. I LOVE SONAR

  • @OMERDERSTUDIO CANT WAIT TILL SONAR COMES OUT WITH THE CAPABILITY TO PROCESS AUDIO ON AN EXTERNAL LEVEL. THEN WE WILL REALLY BE ABLE TO ADDRESS THIS UNIVERSAL DEBATE, I KNOW PRO STUDIOS THAT DONT EVEN USE PRO TOOLS ALL THE TIME. THEY HAVE IT BUT ITS NOT USED FOR EVERY PROJECT THEY DO.

  • @OMERDERSTUDIO yea I know what you mean. To be honest I am not sure if we will see that anytime soon if ever. Sonar is really no trying to compete with Pro Tools like that. DSP cards made to run Sonar would be nice.

  • @itorres008 Save as a omf and still the major studio can open my session. Now if that studio had Le ooooopps can't open OMF files unless you buy a upgrade package for $500 oh excuse me $499.

  • Thanks! Had never looked into ProTools. First sequencer I used was Cakewalk and my buddy has Producer 8.5 now. I didn't know ProTools was a HW and SW bundle and so expensive. Like Sonar even better now. We run it on a puny PC and still does the job. We could get a super PC and Audio INterface and still not be close to ProTools costs.

  • Excellent explanations dude. I think a modern PC easily has the capability to handle anything you could throw at it with this software BUT, the programming is never going to make that happen, because there are so many different PCs, some with nvidia GPU chips, some with ATI, some with dual core some with single core some 32bit some 64 bit, different OS's different sound hardware, different RAM.

  • Great vid, thanks for it!

  • This is such a great vid thanks man! I use sonar 8.5 producer with a i7 950 Overclocked to 4 ghz 12 gigs of ram and 5 harddrives set to fast raid. love it!

    Awesome vid

  • @LukeSirMeister wow man i wish i had your system.

  • @LukeSirMeister Man thats crazy!!!

  • Great video man, I am so glad you said that regular PC's are not made for Sonar. I'm a technician has been for 10 years, first 6 in the Air force. I produce and build PC's, I do have a Sonar rig. why do I call it a Sonar rig, well I have configured the hardware and software to run Sonar like its on crack. Offcourse, I could have just got a G5 and run Pro tools LE, but why when I can have the best of everything.

  • yea I love Sonar too. I really would like to see sonar come out with similar DSP cards that Pro Tools have. Its would really level out the playing field.

  • It's all about what you comfortable using and how your music sounds in the end!!!! I have Sonar PE and Pro Tools. Both are Great, I just prefer PT!!!!

  • Ultimately you are right. I just think it needed to be said that just because u have Pro Tools and the Pro Tools most people use (Le) Is not better.

  • Great video. Helpful. Dang you went from software to organic milk. Point taken. Cool.

  • I know that but, a lot of people think by getting pro tools LE they are getting the same Pro tools as the pros. Plus there are plug ins that dont even work with Le you have to have HD

  • I couldn't agree more me and my neighbor are always arguing about Protools he thinks its better by going by how popular it is and he heard some quality stuff. Thats all skill and like you said they have their own chips so expect quality.

I watched ur battery/sonar tutorial I work just like that. I have S8 and I never wanted PT. I also have reaper and its a bad ass too. It just needs to get caught up on midi.

  • thank you VERY much for posting this. you made some very intriguing arguments for both sides.

  • yeah fuck protools civilian edition! sonar all the way wooo!!!

aye im using mobilepre USB and i feel like it sucks balls ima get a firewire card for my laptop any suggestion on sound card or on hookin it up???

  • what do you think of the new presonus daw. studio one...?

  • it looks really good. I like the interface. I have to get my hands on a demo. I might have a video on it as fast as monday but it looks good.

  • i agree...

dont get me wrong...i am a solid sonar prod. fan/user....but i think ill be giving studio one a try also...

    cheers...

  • now i don't believe it will replace sonar. One thing off top is the act feature in sonar is the best. Even tho it looks like they have something like that I don't think its going to work as well. I don't think you are going to see people leaving what they are using now. I found out there's no demo yet :(

  • @squidskunk need some of you precious help..I'm Fl studio users and now I'm moving on Sonar 8..I just begin with it..for me it's a chinease without undertitle!! cheers...and would know if a usb sound card can handle a pro work as PCI express...mean buy sonar studio V-100 then Emu 1616M..what de u think...thanks man

  • if u have studio 100 u don't need emu1616M. matter fact u could not use them both as a soundcard at the sametime.

  • I think you don't understand me much..I have nor EMU 1616m niether Studio V 100..and wanna know each of this tw cards is better..or turn the question in that way..wanna buy a good sound card so you think PCIe card "Emu1616m" is better or USB2 card "sonar V-Studio 100" ...know that sonar V-studio is complete with its control on sonar producer DAW..but USB2 transfer of information get its speed as PCIe card??? or we can not hear the diffrence by ears!! just a laboratory test can proof it..

    thanks

  • Comment removed

  • @blownspirit for recording in High Definition the EMU 1616m(1212m) really is outstanding. Its the ONLY card that delivers Studio quality for an incredible low price!!! also you have the oportunity using the Microdock with a PC -AND- Notebook just buy a PCMCIA Interface! Sadly theres no USB Option... I spent a lot time in searching and only would choose something else for a diffrent purpose, like connecting a lot of instruments and motorized controls... Hope that helped somebody...

  • @DonDavidAlegria O thanx a lot my friend ..now it's clear and I obviosly sticking on the idea to buy an EMU 16 16M which is basically the best deal in what I'm looking to do..no need to connect multiple instrument or stuff in that way!! now it's help a lot..so I'll wait no more!! thanks again.

  • @blownspirit de nada! so if you only need to connect your keyboard and can spare the highZ mic input you can buy the 1212m for max 100 bugs on ebay and you have a perfect sound! later on you can get the microdock then if you want to record vocals and need phantompower etc. due to the fact it has the outstanding DSPs like protools you won't find any better thing even if you spend a 1000 bugs. even if you go with the cakewalk or apogee the diffrence might not be noticable! only the service is!!
