this man was no sporsman, he was showman, his success down to the pain he caused various animals, handicapped or chained so he could get a shot, and only killed for the camera. The truth behind this footage is that the elephant had his knee caps shot with a rifle before howard shot it with a bow. That is why the elephant doesent charge. Do a little research and see how howard had many of his kills handicapped before he shot.

Not a bad shot for an animal that had already been shot with a gun. If you want to see the real deal, watch some of Bill Negleys vids from the 1960's. He did it without having a guide along shooting a .500 Nitro.

@chris16june - I have the full movie. Hill shot the elephant on request of a tribal chief because it went rougue and was killing villagers. Africans do the same thing. Baka pygmies in Cameroon (whom i have lives among) will kill an elephant for meat, but do not poach them for profit (ivory).

to be fair everything is used in africa. that elephant more tehn likly feed a whole village. in africa if the animal has no financial value they are useless and shot off. one reason elephants came back was do to hunters paying money to hunt them.  according to guides in africa

The reaction of the animal was surely edited. I admired Howard Hill for his skill with a bow, he is still considered by many the best archer of all time, but he also holds the record for most species killed. Everything from elephant to snakes. I don't really see the point in it now, but then again the attitude towards hunting purely for sport was much different then. So I think it would be silly to judge him.

Male or "Bulls" regularly go into "must" which is the condition of being ready to breed. When they can not find a mate they become frustrated and will kill anything that crosses their path. Those who are opposed to killing such a beast have never lived in Africa. I wish people would research stuff instead of taking the "helpless, poor defenseless animals "side right away. Plus the meat all goes to natives who otherwise cannot legally kill game themselves or can't afford it.

I am a bow hunter and I have never seen an animal react like that elephant did it didn't charge, it didn't try to flee it just stood there and let a tool shoot him. You put arrow into an animal its either fight or flight.I suspect that animal was chained and the film doctored ...disgusting.

@wwood14 The way the story goes the elephant had killed a few of the people in the village. The bow Howard shot the elephant with was 115 pounds at 28 inches.
