The change to the island over the past 63 years is remarkable and to go there today would be like visiting a different place. This film brings back so many memories of the year I spent there. If I recall correctly, it took around 6 weeks to get from the UK to HK by boat, a truly 'slow boat to China'!
@Jennings03 It's changed a lot. And you cannot swim across many bays on the big island although I swim off Lamma Island...the water is too foul around the big island.
Cudos to the editor of this piece. You captured the essence of the film in a few short minutes. Very emotional! William Holden was the best voice over actor we ever had.
A wonderful encapsulization of the love story in this movie. It makes me cry just as if I had seen the whole thing again. I miss seeing her swimming, though--that is an important scene that unites her with the elements.
After her loss, she will remember him the rest of her life, and she will take good care of her adopted daughter, and she will do fine work as a doctor. That is another thing I love about this movie. All is not lost, though love lasts but a short time on this earth.
Healing is the salvacion of mankind. I envy your ability to heal. I can only stand to watch.
Life's greatest tragedy is not to be loved."
The movie scenery is breathtaking & your editing of the 2 parts of the movie to bring out it's essence is very clever and I enjoy your clip as much as the original movie.
One of the most heartbreaking endings in cinema - and yet, paradoxically, the music of the main theme here soars to sublime heights. It is both sad and uplifting at the same time, I cannot think of any other movie with such an unusual mixture of emotions at the end. There is a sort of ecstasy of grief here which is hard to explain. What do you think she does with the rest of her life when she gets down off of the high windy hill? Still, a great movie, with an unsurpassed musical score.
@niborantable there flowed in her from this moment a passionate defiance of death, an exultant challenge. Fear death? Not she. She would meet death gladly, boldly, for, in the end, she would triumph. She would meet her Beloved again, clasp him in her arms , and out of the pain would come peace.
" I love thee with the breath, smiles, and tears of all my life and if God choose, I shall but love thee better after death.
This opening scene was shot at a Chinese millionaire's house at 41 Conduit Road, Hong Kong. It later became the Hong Kong Foreign Correspondents' Club. It was demolished in the late 60's to make way for a high rise apartment complex called Realty Gardens. I lived there for 8 years in the 70's. That little green pagoda structure still stands behind the swimming pool at Realty Gardens. I was very happy living there. The harbour view was magnificent!
This was and still is a great movie and so way Sayonara. I like the movies that were made back when it was considered socially unacceptable for people to look across ethnic lines for romance. I also like the ending lines in this movie . . . We haven't missed, you and I, we haven't missed That Many Splendored Thing!!

Amazing performance by Jennifer Jones as Dr. Han. They don't make movies of this quality anymore.

@satochato82 さんへ
