Those without insight have made similar comments about great works, like those of Mozart and Vincent van Gogh. So many people do the same boring thing day in and day out because it's comfortable. These guys are all about getting uncomfortable. And that's how you move to the next level. A wise person once said, "On the shoulders of a giant, a dwarf can see further than the giant". You might want to try and stand on the shoulders of these giants. You may be surprised what you see.
Excellent demonstration - kept my attention which is hard to do when it comes to group demos. The bunkai was very good as well. In terms of presentation, I really liked this group - and I like how they choreographed the kata. In terms of the old Cobra Kai dark side from the Karate Kid, anyone with any skills at all in martial arts knows there is a dark side as well as a light side no matter the art. It's the martial artist that determines his or her level of respect for others and the art.
All in all, very well done, my only complaint is that I feel every attack in a kata or demonstration should have the feel of a killshot. Anyway, where did you get the Cobra Kai patches?
I don't get it! Its a traditional kata from a traditional okinawan martial art. Why are these guys wearing "Cobra Kai" uniforms! Last time I checked, the "Cobra Kai" symbolism is to indicate what NOT to do with Karate-Do! In the Movie, "Cobra Kai" represented the "dark side" of martial arts. No code, or spiritual philosophy! "KICK AS AND WIN" NO MERCY!!! True Karate is about knowledge; self defense; and personal growth. Everything "Cobra Kai" is not. What are these guys trying to say then?
I have been trainning for over 30 years so as far as being a traditionalist...well I suppose I am by default. And while Martial Arts should be done with discipline it should also be done with a light heart as well. You guys did an awesome job!!
Thats great! Awesome idea and an even better Homage to The Karate kid! than the New "Karate Kid" movie. That being said, I thought the actual bunkai kumite could have used A LOT more energy and Mistuke. It looked more like a dance, too dainty for a blackbelt demonstration. I mean the choreography was GREAT! Just no energy!
i just cant bleive what Karate is comingto, this is a farce,i would be ashamed to be part of this, they have no idea what karate is all about ,if they did they would not need to do this rubbish
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
hate these debates on what ma is the best- whatever works 4u i suppose- but katas aka tai chi & board breaking are a waste of time (50%+ of traditional martial arts like karate)- - personally mma and street defence by geoff thompson i found to be more tuned to the real world - not 2000 year old styles- have u tried mma? i got my arse handed to me for months and i was a` black belt`! talk about false sense of security- glad i got teh sense beaten into me and threw my gi in the bin lol
Let`s clarify one thing: Karate Do is an ancient martial art and since the late 70s until nowadays is also a sport that can be called only karate. If you understand the different between martial art and sport, you can like one or the other or even both. No big deal. The problem is when karate as a sport is considered like a martial art,or when people who doesn`t understand thinks like a traditional martial art is like this video. I.E. this video shows a sport not a martial art at all.
Karate is not sport, what they are doing should not be called Karate, most people have not seen real Karate and only do a watered down version all they are interested in is getting their black belt, all it does at the end of the day is to hold your gi together its not something magical
Cool. I've never heard of that. It's a great idea. So many students don't know what it is they're actually doing when they perform katas. A bunkai application competition is a great way to reinforce that there is an actual point every movement.
I don't care what anyone else has to say about this. it was entertaining while staying true to the form as well as demonstrating some bunkai. that is awsome. it promotes the tradition while keeping it fresh and artistic (it is martial ARTS after all). I have been studying since 1980 in shorin-ryu matsumura as well as shuri-te. i hold tradition close to my heart. if you don't like it... well get over it!
Don`t know what tournament this was, but it sure wasn`t organised by the JKA... In WHAT discipline did they win anyway? I only know kumite and kata. Karate only holds matches and tournaments in kumite and kata... This wasn't either of them!
Are you serious with your ten replies down there??? It's called a life. Try getting one.
This btw was a tournament held at a National Training Seminar for Shorin-ryu Shidokan, which is traditional Okinawan karate (Google is your friend) The bb's in this video have trained in a traditional karate dojo for ten years at the least (and the Sensei for over twenty) How about you do some goddamn research before writing a million replies that just show how little you actually know...
Ok, I can't stand demonstrations and cobrakai type kah-ROH-tee, but this was much better than all the real bullshit that is out there. And I am a pure Koryu practitioner. At least they did an actual kata and not something made up!
lol WOW ok don't know what kind of dance classes you've been watching...and just out of curiosity, what is "karatedo" about? Because if you actually paid attention to the video beyond what they're wearing you'd have noticed that there is a LOT of *legit* karate going on there.
Then again, I'm not surprised that a lot of people just don't get it :-P
Since you ask, xDJAJNosillAx, I will tell you what karatedo is NOT about: it's NOT about who can yell as loudest "YES SENSEI!" (Even in Japan, they don't train like that). There is a philosophy behind the WHITE dogi, that goes back to the samurai, who wore white under their armor as a sign for their "readiness" to die. Today, in Japanese karate and Judo, they usually ALL wear white as a tradition. Occasional exceptions exist, but Cobra Kai has no idea WHY white is the traditional color...
(cont.) Furthermore, the kind of karate they are showing looks too much as a row of memorized punches and kicks, which would do good in a martial arts movie, but I would love to see these guys in action in a real kumite match... The kata they walk step by step in the beginning, nice follow up by these guys, but they do not understand the kata or the techniques. Doing a technique and understanding them are two different things!
Anyway, it looks nice, funny bunkai, surely hilarious with that Crane Technique from the Karate Kid at the end, but it's surely NOT the true karate!
I just find it a pitty that so many schools, esp. in the USA, are so commercialized and many people think that good karate comes from shouting "YES SENSEI" at everything he says. It's good to follow your sensei, but not blindly! Even the highest sensei make mistakes!
These students study an Okinawan style of karate and yes, that is the TRUE karate. Karate began on Okinawa, read a book why don't you? And BTW, this bunkai is a good demonstration of the application of Kusanku Dai, while simply having fun with a parody of the Karate Kid movie. Not every American karate school is commercialized. Idiot.
Don`t know what tournament this was, but it sure wasn`t organised by the JKA... In WHAT discipline did they win anyway? I only know kumite and kata. Karate only holds matches and tournaments in kumite and kata... This wasn't either of them!
Nice to watch, funny act, but it`s not convincing me that these guys KNOW karate. Not saying they DON`T, but this is just not convincing. They only convinced me so far that they would make (fairly) good martial arts actors (but not as good as Jackie Chan though!).
But you are entitled to be of a different opinion of course...

Lacks intensity! It's sad when theatrics helps in tournaments. Just another example of how WE Americans have a propensity to nerf everything!
