There was another showing of this video that explains it a bit different. It was determined that it was a younger Elephant seal first off, second, yes it was trying to eat him but considering they try and swallow their prey whole...he wasn't in a whole lot of danger, AND he had another person with him. And hey...did you ever think...IT'S A WILD ANIMAL!? No shit it acted unpredictably, it's w-i-l-d. Bottom line: don't ever assume it's safe to pet a wild animal.

My understanding is that elephant seals are a bit territorial, or at least prefer their personal space be respected. They're big and they don't like being bothered. Dangerous enough to provoke on land, but in their element underwater, the guy was lucky he only annoyed the thing a little bit.

The seal was just playing. Can you imagine the power of this creature. If it wanted to do some damage it could rip those divers' heads right off and crush them like grapes. It's like playing with a German Sheppard. Obviously when the dog bites you it'll only be a scratch, but if you were really fighting against it, it wouldn't be scratches anymore, but bone crushing jaws would rip your skin open so easily. This isnt the first time something like this happened. An orca (child) was wanting to play,a diver came in and tried to feed and cope with it. The orca grew impatient of waiting,and nearly drowned the diver,of course the diver was intelligent,and by the act of the orca,was just wanting a playmate.

i don't know if you're a diver, but i am, and a knife wouldn't defend yourself very well against that thing. it would just make it angrier. A knife against an elephant seal would be like toenail clippers against a rabid dog.

lol, im not a qualified diver yet but the knife would be better than nothing. think about the damage of a seven inch razor sharp knife can do to a sensitive area, maybe the eyes or the mouth. ur still probally gonna die either way but ur survival odds are better; unless you want to wait around for it to stop attacking (not likley). also if the animal isnt so large you might be able to kill it. the knife will give you more of a fighting chance than ur fists

I've been in the water with creatures that big, and they can make you their bitch, knife or no knife ( Most divers don't carry 7 inch knife blades, too- they're generally a lot smaller). You're just not going to get the chance to do much to that animal. They're soooo much faster and stronger than you.

The only thing the diver had going for him was that he wasn't attacked from behind. Most predators like to do that and you don't get the chance to prepare for attack.

yep thats true, i was aware of that. my point is that you will have a better chance. some people have survived shark attacks and other animal attacks by fighting back. you can do alot more damage with a knife than a fist. also not all creatures are that large so the knife may be effective. i think the simplest solution is to try to not be in water with huge predators near, dont try to pet them. id carry a bigger knife. yes id probally be dead either way but id fight more effictivley with a knife
