@mlc2005 I think the judges thought that when you do a skill that's as original as that, you get a high score. Plus, she had interesting stalder work.
@mlc2005 She medal because of the difficulty level in all the routine, even with the transition from the high to the low bar, the routine is so difficult, even that element is very difficult because it was connected with a pike front flip. Khorkina hit her fit on the low bar on her inverted giant and still won the gold medal even when she performed only 8 elements.
@mlc2005 She already performed a stalder-shaposhnikova (a skill named after her) which was very difficult and original, so she'd already shown a good transition. I think it would have affected her if she hadn't had a good transition, but she goes on the low bar twice instead of once so it's not that bad. Stalders were also very tricky to continue throughout a routine without muscling intensely, and she tops it off with an almost stuck double-double... but yeah good transition saved the bad one..
i just love how this routine has so much more low bar work. i think the majority of the routine is on the low bar. well deserved medal. as much as i love bi and khorkina, i would still loved to see mo huilan win the gold on bars. loved that routine most
how did her score change from 9,825 to 9,837? I think Wenjing deserved the silver to herself. Her routine was on a different league than that of Chow's.
there was an error in the entering of scores- I think one of the scores of the judges was entered as 9.1 in stead of something higher, and because they took the top 4? scores of the judges... the judge whos score was a 9.1 was actually higher than one of the top 4 scores, thus affecting the end averaged score... i hope that makes sense
I think the new format hurts the U.S since they had by far the most depth of all around gymnasts at the last 2 Olympics but the team format didnt reward them for that. Romania and China had a great mix of gymnasts who were very good to great on between 1-3 events and it was mostly easy to slate which 3 to go on each of the 4 events out of 6 gymnasts. The U.S was almost a victim of too much AA depth.
i don't think it hurts them i think the injuries is mainly to blame. had chelsie been able to perform alicia, even though i adore her, would not have been put up on beam. and who knows who they would have put up on floor with chelsea and sam healthy. in 04 coupets was injured right before the beam and she made a mistake as well as on the floor. so, you never know. i think it has more to do with injuries coming at the wrong time.
Doesnt this show the depth of the U.S team though. She was the last person to qualify for the 7 women team, she got the very last spot at the Olympic trials. Yet she was a very solid performer who could be easily used on any of the 4 events and was Olympic silver calibre on bars.
It is interesting you saying that since I remember reading you saying on the Bi bar video that you think she deserved the gold. So does that mean you think Khorkina deserved only bronze or worse?
great, a much deserved silver for amy. she always landed with her chest a little low on the dismount, but still probably the only double double at those games
I loved Amy Chow, but mostly the '96 Amy Chow. Watching this routine takes me back to that summer when I was 9 and the US girls seemed superhuman to me.
I always enjoyed watching Amy on the uneven bars, Her form was so clean, Team USA could use a bar worker like her for 2012

The transition from low to high at .25 is SOOOO 1980. Why did she medal with that type of transition? I never got it.
mlc2005 6 months ago
@mlc2005 I don't know, maybe the level of difficulty with everything else had something to do with it.

"what was the skill she did from the high bar to the low bar after the pike geiger?
...like a straddle pac salto?" Yes, it's a straddled pak salto. Used to be a C. It might only get B credit for a salto roll now but I'm not sure.

@federernadalfan She had a bad fall on beam during the trials though, otherwise she would've placed a lot higher.
