hey man cool info. i actually went out and bought one of these little guys. works pretty good too. i tried to patch up some 14 guage sheet metal and even on low puts holes in it. i may have had the wrong size/type rod. what size and number rod whould you reccomend for thin metal like that? thanks
hey Freddy - I need to add a rear brake tab to an existing minibike frame and not done any welding - which welder would you recommend between this and the 90 amp Harbor Freight wire-feed unit? Best, (another Freddy)
Good video , I worked as a master tech for many years & know the importance of high quality tools in both performance & longterm use but I have several sets & items of cheap tools even HF that seemed have been used at home & for beaters & those jobs when you just have to cut , bend or modify & you just don't want to use a Snap on or Mac in that way . Many do very well .
Personally, I would buy a used lincoln ac225 stick welder, for the same price. It is way more powerful, and can do way more. Also it will last a life time. (that is what I did)

@tbndeereman75 it still doesnt fill the niche of 6lb 110v hobby welders. dont get me wrong, i love the tombstone welders. but they're too heavy for the small jobs that most people would use this for... i bought my forney 100amp which weighs only 6 lbs, just so i could weld without having to need to lug around a huge 40-50lb welder. i can easily keep it in the back of my mustang, and if the need arises when im out and someone asks for the oddjob weld, i can do it. your comparing apples to oranges
@Munky332 I agree if you need a portable welder those things are perfect, but I was saying for things like farm repairs, where you have 220 and it is stationary, I would prefer a buzz box. If you have to move it at all, a 300 lbs transformer welder is a PITA.

@73Corbin keep in mind that the craftsman is probably an AC machine? i dont know what model your talking about so i couldnt give you more specifics. the harborfreight welder typically goes on sale sometimes for 99$. thats when you should buy one. they used to go for less, but they saw how many people were buying them and upped the price it seems. if the craftsman is an AC machine, its gunna weigh a ton (30-50lbs). DC inverter machines are tiny and weigh in the 6-9 lbs range (portability)
few things are worth the buy but things like, chop saw or miter saw, tile cutter , skil saw walk away..been there done that.. i love their little 18g guns.. they never break on you and can use multiple stables and nails.. only twenty bucks worth the buy.. their heavy hammers are an big bargain as they are super cheap and durable ..
@freddytk421 You can simply ignore them, cant you? The only reason to disable adding comments could be that the content of the majority of them are abusive. I don't think that's the case with your videos...

When I finally blow this thing up, it will definitely have paid its way.
Cory is right! Ford Chevy and Harley Davidson do the same thing. Ford had a recall for seats made in mexico. Chevy has plants there as well and HD has wiring harnesses made in Japan for new bikes. All proudly deceitful as can be in the USA ! Kenmore made sewing machines in Japan as far back as the 40's and the same goes for Canada. Singer made sewing machines in 6 countries during world war two. All this crap this guy is saying about China is just a small part of history.
This guy is a HF junkie ! Notice how he pushes HF sales on YT but no other retail chain. Might be he works for HF or gets a deal for pushing product. Up to 30 days to take most of the junk back. The hammer heads will come lose. The ARC welder will die in a year or less and all his throw away tools will get melted down one day and wind up right back on the shelf as new product again, His HF wedding ring will prolly be made from the HF drill bits he threw away. Hale for the throw away guy !
@bashingyourshit The moral of the story is: Do not buy stuff here if your paycheck depends on it. If its for a one-time use, then why not save some money?
@freddytk421 even though we dont have harbor freight here in canada, I often look at harbor freights website for the fun of it. I saw a 4.5 inch angle grinder there with the paddle switch, I thought you might want to know.
@man9170 it beeps when you need to let it rest. it cant weld for too long. it beeps a little sometimes when you first start the arc but if it keeps beeping then go have a sandwich or something and comeback because the machine needs to rest or cool down or whatever.
hey freedy ur the man any how i just bought this welder and i am new to welding but i was wondering what amperage i should use with what size electrodes to weld big stuff right now i am using 1/16 6013 and 3/32 6011 please reply i need to know what to use and amperage for thicker metal
id recommend the total replacement harbor freight offers. its like 10 or 20 bucks for a tool like that but if it does end up breaking they will take it back no questions asked and give u a brand new one. they are really nice about it.
@jvsee12345 I had that same exact problem with trying to stick some thin tubing with the maxstar. I think the problem I had with it was it was too hot at the beginning because of the hot start that keeps it from sticking. I wish you could turn off the hot start on the maxstar.
haha yeah occasionally I get craftsman stuff but I have to say the welders from harbor frieght are definitely worth the money I fuckin live at harbr frieght
Freddy I love my 80 amper I bought bc of you. Im also a macroeconomics major, and us trading with China is very good for our economy. American are price goudjers as you I love your channel...
For $129 if all you got was one good repair you have goten you $ back.. when i weld i charge by the job and $129 will get you a couple hours work with me..
Is it hard to learn to weld? I have never welded before and wanted to do it for some projects around the house. Did you have to take an extensive course before you can weld? By the way what do you think of those welding helmets from Harborfreight? The ones that go dark when exposed to bright light of the welding spark?
I always heard bad things about Harbor Freight tools "you get what you paid for" so i never really took the time to find out for myself, and im sure most of the stories i heard werent found out first hand either. I wont lie im all about good quality "American made tools" that usually cost a arm or a leg to get, BUT i wouldnt mind having this welder or there mig welder because of videos like this. thanks for making it.
Seriously this is a joke. Lets buy all this cheap shit from harbor freight. What the hell happened to American Pride. NO offense but people like you are the reason The US is in so much debt. You buy all this cheap shit and send all out money over seas. We import more than we export no wonder people don't have money. How about Craftsman hammers and tools or snap on tools? 90% of my tools are American Made and I am damn proud. I don't know how anyone respects you guys. Buy Quality You Cheap Ass.
@BBroering I can't afford to buy all the brand name tools. I can afford to buy chinese import knockoffs that work well enough for me. Im glad you can afford to have all that stuff and you must be the envy of your neighbor hood. I can have a few American tools or a garage full of imports. You can make videos about american tools if you want if you think youtube videos can make or ruin a whole country.
@freddytk421 well then if you can't afford it don't buy It. But all the profitts go to china and other coutries. so save your money and buy the americn money and support our economy and our small bussines. Don't buy quantity buy quality.
Incompetent, poorly regulated bankers and money lenders are the reason that US is in so much debt...they gamble with other peoples money, screw up but still make huge bonuses...just the facts man...just the facts
Really? America's problem is largely in the attitude of the people. We as a nation now have a HUGE deficit, our government buys out irresponsible companies and banks instead of reimbursing citizens through the FDIC. Our government no longer invests in useful things like the TVA. Instead, we squander 20 percent of our tax dollars fighting terrorists that no longer exist. 6% of your tax dollars pay for the irresponsible decisions of america's past.
@WoodcockMichael hell yeah and i support the war in iraq . it is bringing us money in that you don't even realise. not to mention the money paid out is paid to americans who most of it comes back here. i would rather pay for that than some trash who got themselves in over their head with debt and doesn't know what to do. and explain to me how you can keep sending money to china and not bringing even 10 percent of it back how you can make money ....you can't so the fix is raise terriffs / export
@BBroering Buy all the chinese tools you can before they impose terriffs. The dollar will be worth much less but you still have a cool chinese welder that is worth double what you paid.
@freddytk421 so that means the american made quality tools will be worth anymore. So I'll keep buying them the chinese shit will just be come obsolete because you would have to pay too much for less quality.
@BBroering You do realize that historically any country with a tariff selling to the US will return the favor? There are companies here on the edge of multi million dollar ventures into the asian market. (such as electrojet) Without our buisness, how would they afford to buy american goods? The economies of industrialized nations are global.
@lordaboveall Im not saying spend a lot. or buy the most expensive. Im simply saying buy american to keep the us dollar here and strong. if not for your future generations but for the fact they are set to a higher standard so they are usually better quality.
@goergeofthejungle101 no wonder you probably wont have a job and it will get sent over seas with an attitude like that. buy your cheap shit and pay for it in the long, or as it is looking short, run. Good Luck Cheap ass.
@BBroering Snap on???? wow your proud of your tools. I looked up one snap on screwdriver....$16.00 !!! for one screwdriver??? Screwdriver from harbor freight? $2.00. A screwdriver is a srewdriver, your paying for the name. I garentee you they will both last just as long.
@gangboy1013 your half right.i actually have craftsman screw drivers and how i use them i would bend or break the ones from habor freight. not to mention the tips on the phillips would have been worn out a long time ago. but you can get 5 Made In The USA Craftsman screw drivers in eight slot or phillips right now for $8 so cheaper than your harbor frieght and a hell of a lot better quality. I don't own many snap on tools for the reason you said but it is an American company. I am a Craftsman Man
@CCSinventions Haha wow kid, If you weren't so ignorant you would probably get what I'm saying. Have some Pride in yourself, country, and things you do. Hell Americans Pride isn't what it use to be. People don't care about nice things. They just want lots of things. NO matter how they have to get. So maybe you should actually read a little more and think before you say stuff. But I would like to comend you on your projects stick with it. Unusaul but cool. Keep on building.
@BBroering remember im not the one that started shipping stuff over to china for them to make it. also thankyou for the unusual twist of commmending me on my project :)
@GoHoBoJoGo haha you damn hoser. what good comes out of canada? the only thing I can think of is huskavarna chain saws and they still aren't as good as stihl (German or USA). Seriously if I wanted to waste my time talking to a spineless fellow I would talk to a frenchman.
@BBroering You probably shouldn't comment on things you know nothing about you FAT LAZY DUMB Fu<ker! Let me be as ignorant as you: Go make up an excuse to go attack a country so you can steal their oil you capitalist pig!
freddy i just got my 80 amp inverter stick welder today 10 -16 -10 and cant wait to start doing things with it, like a pipe rack for my truck and other stuff, i'll get it on video, if you got anyother tips on this 80 inverter beside the tips you posted hit me up man. you the man freddy thanks for your insite, tips, and more buddy, ALOHA & MAHALO
You said you did the tack weld with the little machine... then you went back with the oxy fuel... I have never worked with Tig but want to learn... so was curious because you said that you didn't recommend it, that you weren't happy with the results. I have only worked with the stick welding machines at school... and wanted to buy a portable welder.... but want to be happy with the finished piece.
@MYDRAGGIN84 i wouldnt. for 1/4 you need 120 amps from a stick welder. this guy is welding for art. it just has to hold it self up, the big thing is this little welder is not penatrating. i like how he says that the welds arent that good and he goes back with the torch, it like duh your welder is too small. if your going to harbor freight get something bigger, but to be honest just get a lincoln buzz box. $240 at lowes and 225 amps. and there known to last forever
@coalandnuclear alrite thanks i want to do frame reinfrocement. For cars and trucks so i can build my lowrider i know all the basic of welding its. I need a big welder. And something that Ican make my back so i can get a mig.I learned all my trades on the streets shop hoppin.I really want to g2 lincoln tech in taxaes and finish my mechanics and welding & computers I still have time at 29
@MYDRAGGIN84 You can get a 200 amp version of the machine in the video off ebay for $250 "or best offer". It's a "Smarter Tools" and the seller is "richardson-trading". Takes 220 volts, though.
@coalandnuclear thanks 4 the tip. I have heard bad things about Harbor Freight, a friend told me he bought a drill there and it wasnt even worth a dollar an hour, it busted itself in less than 15 minutes!
@IAmSmokingDank This welder still works. You can take broken stuff back to the store for a refund. They don't ask questions. you can try to break it for 30 days, if it breaks get your money back if it lasts then hell yeah.
@coalandnuclear You only need 90 amps if you are using a 6010. someone that knows how to weld can weld 1/4 inch with this machine using small rods with a bevel and a few passes. Just like you can weld thick plate with 120 amps. it's too much work for me but possible if you want to.
@mom4life91708 really check out the tools in your box already got vise grips made in china got mac tools made in tiawan got ingersal rand made in china i say the same thing no more china tools but your tool box would be empty
I've been planning on buying the Forney model that looks really similar to this. Seems like a good little welder. I wonder if a higher quality cable set and electrode holder wouldn't help the performance if this littel guy...
What people don't seem to realize is that pretty much 90% of things here in US are made in China, I worked at a table factory, and they made the table legs in China, shipped them over to our factory and we assembled them, funny thing is that they could still put the made in USA sticker on it since it was partly made in USA. So people who say they will not buy shit from China, you already have. The only American made thing is Mcdonalds...
@Corysez no there is a federal law saying that if it is assembled in the us of foreing parts they have to post theat on the product and or package. they can only put made in the usa if it is made in the usa. but if you look a lot of products say assembled in the usa of foreign and domestic parts.
Thanks for your great videos. After much searching, I couldn't find anything close to yours!!
Could you please explain how you measured and made the sides for the bust of the man who is in your video about the Harbor Freight 80 amp inverter arc stick welder. How hold it in place for welding? My biggest problem is trying to plan how to measure and join the legs to the torso, which you explained how to do. Same problem with shoulders and arms.
How measure so they can be attached and fit right.
@andsp3 I use paper and fit it up then use the paper as a stencil on sheet metal then hammer using the homade tools from my other video. I will cut and fill in as necessary but I usualy get it fit pretty good if I use the paper.
@rangerkid777 Miller and lincoln are great. but this one is 100.00 and is still kicking after tons of abuse. I have some miller stuff but this is a good deal no matter how you slice it. plus it's the size of a football.
hey freddy thanks for the info...im going to buy a harbor frieght welder as soon as i get your response,im stuck between the welder you are using and the mig easy 300..there both close to the same price....im new to welding and the applications will be for round tubing for custom bike frames...tell me wich one you think is best for me and will give the cleanest look
@TheLamborghinimuira The "MIG" is more state of the art. If you can tolerate frustration, get one of these. It WILL work, it is just really difficult. For bikes get a MIG.
I'm an older fellow who has just begun to try to weld human figures, with little success, unfortunately. I think the ones you show on this site are are great.. I would appreciate it if you would let me give you a call since I have a number of questions which it would be hard to write out. I know it's an imposition but if you could spare a few minutes I sure would appreciate it. I live in a small town in California and have my "shop" at home.
Have you heard of anyone who's tried paralleling these things? I have one and like it as well but thought about how much better it'd be with twice the power.
@spmok4 no you don't need anything else besides the sticks and helmet. I have some more vids of this little welder on here showing how to use it better look at hobby art welding ep 2 stick. I think thats what it's called.
After looking at this video i went out and purchased the same welder for $100 and never had a problem, it works really good when using 6011 3/32 rods and could weld 1/4 in a single pass.
I like your video and it helped me decide to get an inverter arc welder. I ended up going with a more powerful 240v unit. That way I can do both the lighter stuff and also bigger stuff with 1/8" rods. Mine goes up to 200 amps and has 100% duty cycle at 120 amps. I thought it was pretty good for $250, "Smarter Tools" brand. Just search for "Smarter Tools IGBT".
@herring7 Sounds good, I wouldn't mind giving it a try but I already have a bigger inverter welder/tig/plasma unit, and a really big generator/welder. That sounds like a good deal though.

cant tell you how much i appreciate your excellent videos. to review the very equipment i am looking to buy from the same company is truly fortunate for me. thanks so much! i dont know anything about welding, still reading, trying to decide what to buy, thinking about the oxy/ace thingy.
I thought I was really big into Harbor Frieght. When I moved to San Antonio and discovered where the store was I felt more at ease.
The tools are ok to keep in your tool box so that way you don't wind up loosing your Craftsman, Snapon, or Mac tools when people "borrow" them. People who brag about their tools are too cheap to buy them or god forbid they use Harbor Frieght. They are the ones who usually the ones "borrowing" your good tools.
Funny thing is, I live in a union town. My buddies (union and retired union) constantly B.tch about china tools.. Yet- they go to HF and other places and buy the stuff. So I'm the bad guy and I guess they are just under cover shoppers.
Hey Freddy have you tried H.F.'s 240 volt ARC/TIG inverter? I have a Lincoln MIG (and a Campbell Hausfeld flux only) welder and a Miller Thunderbolt ARC machine and they both work great. I'm looking for an affordabl;e TIG machine.
Sorry I have not tried it. I have not heard much about that one but its probably good but I can't vouch for it. I just got a cheap plasma\tig\stick with a foot pedal and I'm trying out the tig tomorrow. The stick and plasma are good Its not from hf but its an affordable chinese make. They have tig machines too. Check it out on my longevity playlist@dirtbagdan79
Yeah mine came loose also. all my later videos you can see that I fixed them and couldn't figure out how to fit those rubber collars back on. NBD like you said.
Yhea I also buy my stuff from HF, if they sold food and beer then there were no need for another store. BTW really nice sculptures, you make them for living or just for hobby?
1/2 inch rods because they heat up well. thinner if you are welding plate. I do have more videos subscribe because I am going to post regularly now that I have a good camera.
Your video has inspired me to get this as my first welder, seeing it's on sale this month. Never weld before, but my dad claims this thing kicks .. butt. He thought because it was a 120V, it wouldnt do good. But after messing with a few random steel items, we actually had to turn it down on some stuff (Bolt to pipe) because it was just getting too hot too fast!
Later tests will be done, but so far, This is a very good welder.
The thing it self says "Best results for 3/32" and we got 1/16, my dad, took welding classes long ago and can still weld good, feels 1/16 is just too small for what we tested on. But I had plans to weld some sheet metal, around 1mm thick. And the guy at the store said this welder will do great for it, Plus im doing some small items :)
It's all good I have quite a thick cyber skin lol. I'm used to catching hell, I even encourage it on occasion. I aint mad at you. and lincolns are awesome i'll admit it.
I'm interested in doing some sculpture as well. Any recommendations as to where to find scrap metal? Thanks!

When I finally blow this thing up, it will definitely have paid its way.

@redbeard0183 6010 does not like to run well on any of the small portable welders... 6013 runs the best along with 7018

All this crap this guy is saying about China is just a small part of history.
bashingyourshit 11 months ago
This guy is a HF junkie ! Notice how he pushes HF sales on YT but no other retail chain. Might be he works for HF or gets a deal for pushing product. Up to 30 days to take most of the junk back. The hammer heads will come lose. The ARC welder will die in a year or less and all his throw away tools will get melted down one day and wind up right back on the shelf as new product again, His HF wedding ring will prolly be made from the HF drill bits he threw away. Hale for the throw away guy !

@freddytk421 even though we dont have harbor freight here in canada, I often look at harbor freights website for the fun of it. I saw a 4.5 inch angle grinder there with the paddle switch, I thought you might want to know.
tbndeereman75 7 months ago
why is it beeping?
man9170 1 year ago
@man9170 it beeps when you need to let it rest. it cant weld for too long. it beeps a little sometimes when you first start the arc but if it keeps beeping then go have a sandwich or something and comeback because the machine needs to rest or cool down or whatever.

i got a similar welder how do i wire a plug with four wires for 120v?
kawasaki251 1 year ago
@freddytk421 you are exactly right, the hot start on the miller Maxstar is a huge problem, it is too high of amperage and for too long of time.
The Thermal Arc 95s has better starts.
But the harbor freight still my favorite.
jvsee12345 1 year ago
hey freedy ur the man any how i just bought this welder and i am new to welding but i was wondering what amperage i should use with what size electrodes to weld big stuff right now i am using 1/16 6013 and 3/32 6011 please reply i need to know what to use and amperage for thicker metal
jackduup 1 year ago
@jackduup use 5/64 and 1/16 rods 3/32 is the most.
freddytk421 1 year ago
id recommend the total replacement harbor freight offers. its like 10 or 20 bucks for a tool like that but if it does end up breaking they will take it back no questions asked and give u a brand new one. they are really nice about it.
emutiny 1 year ago
I had this little welder and I sold it for $45. I bought a miller Maxstar 150s.
I regret selling the Harbor freight inverter because is a lot better for thin materials (exhaust) because it has the Anti Redning Feature.
jvsee12345 1 year ago
@jvsee12345 I had that same exact problem with trying to stick some thin tubing with the maxstar. I think the problem I had with it was it was too hot at the beginning because of the hot start that keeps it from sticking. I wish you could turn off the hot start on the maxstar.

Buying things we can't afford is cause of our problems. I paid cash for these cheap chinese tools.
freddytk421 1 year ago
Seriously this is a joke. Lets buy all this cheap shit from harbor freight. What the hell happened to American Pride. NO offense but people like you are the reason The US is in so much debt. You buy all this cheap shit and send all out money over seas. We import more than we export no wonder people don't have money. How about Craftsman hammers and tools or snap on tools? 90% of my tools are American Made and I am damn proud. I don't know how anyone respects you guys. Buy Quality You Cheap Ass.
BBroering 1 year ago
@BBroering I can't afford to buy all the brand name tools. I can afford to buy chinese import knockoffs that work well enough for me. Im glad you can afford to have all that stuff and you must be the envy of your neighbor hood. I can have a few American tools or a garage full of imports. You can make videos about american tools if you want if you think youtube videos can make or ruin a whole country.
freddytk421 1 year ago 7
@freddytk421 well then if you can't afford it don't buy It. But all the profitts go to china and other coutries. so save your money and buy the americn money and support our economy and our small bussines. Don't buy quantity buy quality.

@BBroering
Incompetent, poorly regulated bankers and money lenders are the reason that US is in so much debt...they gamble with other peoples money, screw up but still make huge bonuses...just the facts man...just the facts
bitsabiker 1 year ago 4
@BBroering
WoodcockMichael 1 year ago
@WoodcockMichael hell yeah and i support the war in iraq . it is bringing us money in that you don't even realise. not to mention the money paid out is paid to americans who most of it comes back here. i would rather pay for that than some trash who got themselves in over their head with debt and doesn't know what to do. and explain to me how you can keep sending money to china and not bringing even 10 percent of it back how you can make money ....you can't so the fix is raise terriffs / export
BBroering 1 year ago
@BBroering Buy all the chinese tools you can before they impose terriffs. The dollar will be worth much less but you still have a cool chinese welder that is worth double what you paid.
freddytk421 1 year ago
@freddytk421 so that means the american made quality tools will be worth anymore. So I'll keep buying them the chinese shit will just be come obsolete because you would have to pay too much for less quality.
BBroering 1 year ago
@BBroering You do realize that historically any country with a tariff selling to the US will return the favor? There are companies here on the edge of multi million dollar ventures into the asian market. (such as electrojet) Without our buisness, how would they afford to buy american goods? The economies of industrialized nations are global.
WoodcockMichael 1 year ago
@BBroering What a load of bull shit. As long as shit works i use it you dont need expensive tools to work.
lordaboveall 1 year ago
@lordaboveall Im not saying spend a lot. or buy the most expensive. Im simply saying buy american to keep the us dollar here and strong. if not for your future generations but for the fact they are set to a higher standard so they are usually better quality.

@BBroering wouldnt spending more money on american made stuff cost more money therefore causing people to have larger debts

gangboy1013 1 year ago
@gangboy1013 your half right.i actually have craftsman screw drivers and how i use them i would bend or break the ones from habor freight. not to mention the tips on the phillips would have been worn out a long time ago. but you can get 5 Made In The USA Craftsman screw drivers in eight slot or phillips right now for $8 so cheaper than your harbor frieght and a hell of a lot better quality. can you us it to weld 1/4" plate on a car frame
MYDRAGGIN84 1 year ago

IAmSmokingDank 1 year ago
@IAmSmokingDank This welder still works. You can take broken stuff back to the store for a refund. They don't ask questions. you can try to break it for 30 days, if it breaks get your money back if it lasts then hell yeah.
freddytk421 1 year ago
@coalandnuclear You only need 90 amps if you are using a 6010. someone that knows how to weld can weld 1/4 inch with this machine using small rods with a bevel and a few passes. Just like you can weld thick plate with 120 amps. it's too much work for me but possible if you want to.

Corysez 1 year ago 8
@Corysez lol surprisingly in china about %80 of their products come from germany but their mcdonalds comes from the us
thwinecone 1 year ago

The tools are ok to keep in your tool box so that way you don't wind up loosing your Craftsman, Snapon, or Mac tools when people "borrow" them.
Later tests will be done, but so far, This is a very good welder.

can you run 3\32 7018 rods in this
bitsofpieces90 2 years ago
Yes but I find that 5/64 or 1/16th are better, 3/32 is the max.
freddytk421 2 years ago
@freddytk421
PhxSt0rmz 2 years ago
The smaller rods are better if you want to weld thicker metal around 1/4" the 3/32 cant get hot enough. you do have to make a few passes though.
