Then I realized, he was the Pokemon trainer I played in the first game. This was the old me. The true Pokemon master and I beat him. And just like in the first game, he never said a word.

As for the manga, it doesn't matter because there're over 30 different official Pokemon manga, so making them all canon would cause a gigantic paradox of crap, and no one wants that.

@MrHappyTuna 30? I only remember Pokemon Adventures, which follows the game, and The Electric Tales of Pikachu, which follows the anime. Maybe you're confusing the various volumes in the PA series. Even though PA series has many chapters, it's because it's giving each protagonist from each game their own stories. Although they may seem different from one another, they actually take place in the same universe. In fact, in the later chapters, many of the characters interact with each other.

Red is the original person, from the original RGBY games and eventually FRLG. He can also be battled in GSC and HGSS. Ash is just an anime counterpart to him, but obviously, Ash is far less appealing and all-around badass as the original Red.
