I was debating for months whether to buy this game when I was kid... I thougt it was a river raid imitation. Geez had I owned this life would have been different for me :(
I remember unwrapping this game christmas day 1987/88. I spent all christmas day playing it on a black & white portable tv, so long the sound stop working on the tv!
@The4400FalloutFan20 Yep like some have mentioned here, I too spent way too much time playing Atari. Wearing out joysticks and burning out many power supplies along the way. Their were so many different and original games back then and some quite crazy stuff too.
I bought this for the Atari new off the shelf back in the day not knowing anything about the game at all! I didn't bother with a magazine review, nothing, i just thought "man this looks like my kind of game" from the screen shots on the back of the casing. This was by far the BEST Atari gaming choice i EVER made! Best game on the Atari 2600 bar none!.
Solaris was re-worked from a prototype "Last Starfighter" movie tie-in game that was never released, apparently. Definitely among the best of the 2600 games.
I was roughly 8 or 9 when I played this game. I'm not exaggerating when I say this, but this game haunted me. The atmosphere and the difficulty were so alien to me as an eight year old. I remember putting the game in and immediately just hitting a wall. I was never able to understand what my purpose was. The game certainly doesn't tell you. The game did nothing but confound me but, being a kid with no money, you play what your parents got you.
Yup, it was an amazing game in retrospect, but this baby really pissed me off as a kid. Especially when your planet gets taken over in a sector and the controls are reversed....
This was one of the best games from the 2600's late '80s / early '90s "rebirth" as the "2600jr.", a budget-priced Nintendo competitor. Unfortunately, it ended up stealing sales away from Atari's own 7800 more than the Nintendo, so instead of having one market-leading game system, Atari ended up with none.
Play Solaris Phase 2, maybe I'll be impress.

One thing I liked about the 2600, You can instantly start playing any game without waiting for updates to download.

Even though this game came out in the mid to late 80's, the graphics are amazing considering the Atari console itself was designed in the 70's.

Unbelievably good graphics for the Atari 2600. This looks better than many NES games even.

This and Radar Lock were sheer genius on VCS. I still got 'em and they still play better than similar games made 20 years later.

This game showed what the 1978(!) Atari 2600 can do! This is awsome! 2600 rules!

This is proof that no console has ever been pushed as hard as the 2600 was.
Hard to believe that the same system which had Combat also had this!

How do you start the game after pressing "reset?"
Do you press the button?
edsucksfredrocks 2 years ago
You either press the fire button or move the joystick forward (up) to start the game.

Wow, how did I miss this one back in the day? Funny though, the graphics and sound effects are remarkably similar to Radar Lock....
psychedelicdreamer 2 years ago
They should be! Atari re-used the main code of Solaris to create Radar Lock.

Thank you for using footage from a real Atari instead of just screen capturing an emulator. Very cool.
