Thank god for keeping data on all my flights I flew on this aircraft from Duesseldorf to Mallorca in 1989. I only flew on thos one once. But most trips in my youth were made on LTU Tristars.
I preffered sitting in front of the engines. All you could hear when taking off was the "growl" from the engines. Oh the memories :-))
For a number of years they had three Tri Star aircraft sitting in a field from that airline in Amerillo Texas. They was slowly scraped for it's metal. I remember every time I passed by more and more of the planes parts was missing untill there was no more planes.
On rotation wouldn't the No. 2 engine (S-duct) experience marginal thrust loss? The planes tilted up at an angle that would cause the fuselage to block incoming air, same thing with DC-10's and 727's too, would they not?
The Tristar contract caused RR to go into liquidation in 71. I think the golden age for RR will come with the A350. The Trent is the development of the RB211. The original RB211 and Trent family sound very similar. But GE and Pratt are not standing still. Competition is healthy providing nobody misbehaves and gives money under the table. The stakes are very high.
i had the pleasure to fly with LTU tristar plane to gran canaria as i was a child, and i still remember it, as a powerfull experience and a smooth push into the seat during takeoff ;-)) for me personal, i would still fly tristar today if thery where still in use, but NEVER step inside a DC10 or MD11!! u should seek for BIMAN airlines here on youtube, the DC10 is still in use TODAY as a PASSENGERplane^^ i wonder if those passengers get money instead of paying, when they buy BIMAN tickets^^
Man.......talk about bringing back the memories. I remember taking that LTU Tristar from Montego Bay, Jamaica to Dusseldorf, and back to Montego Bay. That was my first LTU experience in the summer of 1993. I think it was late July/early August of that year when I first flew with LTU. Can still remember the sound of the engines during takeoff. :=)
Hey glitchfinder 3 If you think tristars are crap, why are you watching this video?? I doubt that you could out design Lockeed on airliners. Maybe you should check the safety record first BEFORE you make your dumber than a box or rocks comment.
wow the tristar has an outstanding design!!its an airplane with 3 engines 2 on wings and 1 on top!!very creative!!there were/are less tristars flying than 737s and even then there were more tristar crashes than 737 crashes!
are you sure you don't mean the DC10? the DC10 was re ally a problem aircraft in the beginning. The Tristar not, it was one of the most advanced ones back then.
What do you know about airplanes? You probably havent seen a tristar before. Compare a perfect safety record as far as mechanics to the safety record of a dc-10 or any other plane. Also the tristar makes the triple seven look like the flinstone mobile. Great video air1luis
The only major incidents on a L-1011 was Eastern 401 (Pilot error), Delta 191 (Weather) and Saudi 162 (Bad Mantainance). Compare that with a total of 282 accidents on a 737, still a nice plane. BTW, I've seen a L-1011 AND flown on a 737-800. It was delayed 5 hours for mantainance.
Tja, das waren noch Zeiten ... da gab es nicht nur geile Flieger, sondern auch noch gute Fluggesellschaften, die mit dem Fuss auf dem Teppich geblieben waren!

Those engines sound incredible. Can't believe Eastern Airlines named their L1011 fleet 'Whisperliner'! I'm not sure i'd call them that!

ugly? the tristar is a BEAUTIFUL plane!!!
so aerodinamic that S-shaped engine, don't you think? much better design than the DC-10, of course more difficult to take out and replace, etc.

L-1011s were beautiful, coolest of airliners....coolest sound too.
ManganeseMan 2 years ago 3
Tri-Star was the queen of the skies, too bad Lockeed stopped manufacturing commercial airliners. Better than Mc Donnel Douglas And Boeing.
habanero661 2 years ago 14
@habanero661
The L-1011 was a luxurious wide body aircraft looking both sleek and very pretty. But in terms of size and bulk, it looks puny compared to the 747.
imbluz 1 year ago
@habanero661 Nah, Lockheed is on par with Boeing. They're better than McDonnel Douglas and Airbus, though.

LTU lost one TriStar during maintenance - some mechanic did something wrong and it burned down.
The TriStar was a great aircraft but a great disaster to Lockheed as well, with a loss of 250 million US-$.

That was the "Tristar 500" that flew to Jamaica and the far east. A shorter version than this one with longer range. LTU had 2 of them. :)
