I commend you for this. My Jenday Conure "Rodrick" will never poop on the serviette I provide, instead he holds it so he can do it on my shoulder or on my chair.
my sun conure is almost a year old and is decently potty trained, he poops when i say poop (most of the time) and i am holding him over the garbage, but how do i break his old habits? every time i open the cage it seems like first thing he does is climb out and poop right on the carpet, its very annoying because i cant get him to stop and it has become the norm for him. also he attempts to poop over people when he is being held, but like i said.... attempts. how do i get him to stop doing this?
@AllGucciPrint you can try to give him a treat just as he comes out of the cage, then get him to step up on your hand, then get him to poop once the bird is done the treat this may take several times to try to change his routine habit.(may have to try a few diffrent things to throw him off his routine maybe a favorite toy may also work)
@rockybeach1 ill start using some of his favorite treats, thanks. i just like to keep his cage open when im in the room, he always sneaks out and poops when im not looking. he much rather poop on my floor then in his cage lol
okay i got a cinnamon green cheek conure about a week ago and shes already very attached to me and loves me to pet her and my mom HATES when she poops on the floor or anywhere for that matter.i would like to potty train her but what if she just doesnt go over the napkin?and ur like waiting and waiting...i would rather not stand there for an hour lol.
Thanks, basically like the video shows hold them over the napkin when you think they have to go say go potty give them verbal phrase when they do the task they will soon learn.Best of luck with your bird
How do you know when they are going to poop? Are you able to train him so that when you are not home, he will still go poop at the same spot somewhere like how doggy is trained? Thanks!!
Thanks, basically like the video shows hold them over the napkin when you think they have to go say go potty give them verbal phrase when they do the task they will soon learn.Best of luck with your baby.
I've trained my quaker to poop on command. Everytime I saw him pooping I exclaimed "poopy!" in the most excited voice. After a few days he began to make the association. The next step was to give the prompt while holding him over a waste bucket/paper towel...
He's showing consistency and positive reinforcement is how to teach. Every 15 - 20 min. with the verbal que upon the poop followed by the positive reinforcement 'good poop!'.
basically like the video shows hold them over the napkin when you think they have to go say go potty give them verbal phrase when they do the task they will soon learn.Best of luck with your baby.
There really fun I have a green cheek conure like that one and they are really so much fun mines five they can live about 25 yrs. O yea my bird is potty trained to lol :-)
It's a great idea to teach a bird to potty. Some say that it it unhealthy for them to poop on command because it damages their cloaca. I figured out the solution; everytime you see your bird eating food, an hour later, THEN tell it to poop. If it eats twice in 1 day, then tell it to poop 2 hours later. This gives it time to digest the food, and will not damage the cloaca. If it doesn't eat at all, DONT tell it to poop.
I only tell the bird to poop only when I know it has consumed food based on what it has eaten or drank and you have to know how fast your bird digestive system is.
If you want to avoid the possible cloaca problems then teach them a place they can pooh anytime they want to pooh.
My bird (Skittles) was taught simply by me understanding what she was about to do when she "tensed up." She'd do that and I'd run her to the cage.
Now that she's flighted, she just flies to her cage to pooh. Birds are very intelligent creatures so potty training can be pretty simple if you learn to read the "signs" and you don't mind running all day long for a while, lol.
Birds just naturally get this stiff, tensed up stance right before they pooh. Kind of like a little extra "push" to get that pooh worked down so it can drop out. It's at this exact point that I'd jump up from my chair (if I was sitting) and run to the cage and place Skittles on the cage. She'd hold back from poohing, in my guess, because I was ripping through the house, lol. It bought me the few seconds that it took me to get her to the cage.
It was just repetition of constantly running her to the cage every time she had to pooh. She eventually got the "hint" and started flying on her own to the cage whenever she had to pooh. It only took about a month if memory serves correctly. Maybe less. I know it was a WHOLE LOT EASIER than I ever dreamed it could be! Skittles used to sleep with me in bed at night too. This gave me the chance to get her to her cage for her morning pooh before she even woke up. That helped.
@2skittles4u A friend of mine told me the exact same suggestion, except try making note of the time they do it, and how long before they do it again, and that apparently you can set a timer to warn you and do it pre-emptively to save you running. :)
It is so wonderful when a bird is potty trained. Our blue crown is a rehome so we don't know if she had a command word. We have had her a year. She is 7 years old. But she only goes when she is on her cage and she lets us know when she needs to go back. We no longer have to wear special clothing over our clothing and anyone can hold her. Yay!
basically like the video shows hold them over the napkin when you think they have to go say go potty give them verbal phrase when they do the task they will soon learn.Best of luck with your baby.
they only go when they have to go also in the cage they go freely.I monitor there intake and know there system it is okay but I understand your concern.thanks for your input.
Simple solution... dont train them to do it on command. Mine is toilet trained differently.
Instead of this guys version... every time you see your bird doing a poop, say "POOP". They will associate the word with the action. Next you teach them where to do it, once they learn the word. You do this by placing them over the object when they show signs they want to go and say poop. Mine flies back to her playgym to do it. Its the same concept as with puppys. :) I'll do a video on how one day.
This is awesome! I raise greencheeks of all mutations and will send this to my new parents. How did you do it? Love all your videos so keep them coming!
We have potty trained our Sun Conure and it is a big relief knowing he isn't going to mess until we tell him to "go poo" in the approved zones. Makes that element of having a bird all the better! Funny how many people don't even realize you can train them like this.
yes your right most people don't realize that you can potty train a parrot and its very simple to do.I think it is one of the best things you can do for you and the bird.

actually i found some discussion where someone actually has a parrot which has been potty trained. he has severe cloaca problems...
its exactly this sort of forced 'go poopy' command, which is not good i think.
so please be careful everyone :)
74G56 3 years ago
there is much debate over the fact if its healthy to potty train a bird.
a lot of people claim that its dangerous for the bird, that they can damage their cloaca if they poop on command.
im not saying this or that is better, but please do some more research on this subject. (as im doing now :))
