  • On a POP account, when you click send/receive you are pulling the messages off your providers server. Although POP runs a little faster, if your HD crashes you may lose all of your messages. IMAP leaves the messages on the providers server and are retrievable in the event of a HD disaster. Averagely IMAP can handle more Mb's per session, POP seems to slow down at busy times. POP was invented in the 60's to transfer text only. Now we are transferring large video, photo and music files.

  • Woah woah woah. Problem.

I had a nerd battle with a colleague who was reporting that POP downloads the email OFF of the server so its not actually still on the server for other devices to download.

I lost. I tested this. Imap leaves the email on the server for all devices to view, but POP pulls the enitre email off the server and therefore inaccessible by other devices.

    Raaaging! I lost.

  • Finally a very simple and straight forward explanation. No matter how many times I read about the differences I ended up forgetting. SO thank you kindly Richard.

  • Seems to me like POP email would be better then. Because if I accidentally delete an email, then I could still get it on another one of my devices.

  • cheers man imap it is
