well it would matter if the investigating officer was told on the phone a helicopter crashed and turned up to see a autogyro there instead it makes a hell of a difference im affraid howad83 as both aircraft behave in a different manner yes they both got rotors thats about it the rest is totally different and to write up a report stating that this so called helicopter which it isnt wouldnt be totally true now would it next time do some research.

Recently here in Sweden we had an accident where the news agencies clamed it was "...a small helicopter, a so called gyrocopter...". I mean, that's like saying "And today on the highway there was a crash involving a small car, also known as a motorbike...". It's a completely different thing!

Yes the news reporter was totally wrong as a gyro has a rotor system that is freely rotating and thus the forward motion of the gyro keeps the rotors spinning were as a helicopters rotors are constantly spinning via the engine and from looking at this video fotage I'd say that was a RAF 2000 which is a autogiro Ive never seen a helicopter in that guise before so the news reporter was totally wrong.

While I am by no means knocking eh safety of reliability of an AutoGyro, these news nuts give helicopters a bad wrap.. Who cares if he noticed a plane by his aircraft.. If it were a helicopter, he could have maneuvered (maybe quick stopped) into a hover.. An auto gyro.. No forward speed, No rotor autorotation!! hence, he fell out of teh sky!

@pf126p I know that it's been a year since you posted this, but the FAA "in its infinite brilliance" has NOT licensed you to fly one because you fly helicopters. You have a Rotorcraft Category, Helicopter class rating. Unless you have a Rotorcraft Category, Gyroplane Class rating, you cannot fly one. You need dual instruction, a sign-off, and a checkride to be legal
