what the fuck is this guy going on about, i beat the fusion and doom dragon without using offensive psynergy weapons, Armour and the like are a massive part. Customization of class, and stats can be achieved by switching or setting djinn in battle or in the field, or by use of items. Didn't you say it followed the style of most rpgs, and yet you complain about the random battles which are a staple of the genre. The "Gladiator" mode as you so aptly put it is an optional multiplayer game.
@MrWLangers You were incorrect in saying there is nothing to do outside the main quest: exploration of dungeons outside of the storyline, collecting rare weapons, djinn are not essential parts of the storyline but aid you by providing upgraded items or stats a la legend of Zelda. You said it takes 60 hours, i'd say you pulled that figure out of the air as it is quite a short game in comparison to most rpgs, and takes 10-12 hours max. Your opinion is irrelevant, try and find an interesting angle.
random acounters are indeed in a lot of rpg's and wats whit evvryboddy nowdays says turn based is lame and old.
The game is a brillinat work of art, top of the line for gba, great story music en puzzels, the Jin system and sommons are great. stil one of the best rpgs evver, but if it dont day Final fantasy a lot of people think its crap, wel i thin FF is crap most of the time.Play Golden sun for ones Or the Dragon quest series, of Suikoden those are the rpgs imo
More than that, it's the puzzles that are challenging and an average player can go through the game without downing all his characters even once. Like I said, this review is rubbish.
This review is terrible and doesn't do justice to the game at all. You mispronounce a whole bunch of words, completely misunderstand the fundamentals of the game; why complain about the lack of customization when experimenting with Djinn configurations generates hundreds of different character classes? Also, there are loads of side-quests to do that don't always follow the main quest in the game, and you're completely wrong about the tedium of going back to inns after fights;
if you played alot of rpqs then youd find out that random battles are very common. And like dimefan91 said the music is AMAZING i'm suprised you didn't mention it.
I'm surprised you didn't mention the music. Golden Sun has one of the best soundtracks (especially during battles) I've ever heard from an RPG, or any game for that matter.
Granted, battles aren't completely random, as they all happen after you walk a set amount. Also, dunno 'bout you, but I almost entirely use normal attacks. I only use djinn and summons against bosses unless I'm abusing the RNG. Same holds true for psynergy, mostly, except for the healing ones. Also, you don't mention what else the Djinn can do, namely changing classes, which is an incredibly unique and customizable feature of the Golden Sun series.
This is easily one of the top 100 best games ever for any console, and Nintendo Power marked it like 14 when they did their top 100 games, so yeah
Wow...
I hate this review. granted, its your opinion, but it was dull and boring.
This game is based on an RNG, so random battles are sorta obvious, and there is nothing wrong with random battles at all. Besides, if you hate them that much, they get a spell to avoid battles for a while later on. Some puzzles are quite difficult at some points.
Calling all the puzzles easy is more than lying. Some are quite difficult.
The armor and weapons aren't helpful? WOW, you obviously haven't played this game through, let alone the second game. Going back to towns to heal is done in EVERY RPG. Look at pokemon/DQVIII. Turn-based battles have nothing wrong with them, so how is that a flaw in the gameplay? Cartoon-like cutscenes? what do you think this is? a wii/ps3/360 game? this game is from 2001, when the GBA was like brand new.
The battle mode isn't the only extra thing besides the main quest. Did you get all 7 Djinn of each element, or 28 Djinn in total? Did you beat Crossbone Island Cave?
Apparently you didn't realize that you can put different element Djinn on your characters, each different combination giving you different classes and Psynergy. Also, if you ever have to go back out of the dungeons to buy new healing items, you're bad at the game.
Golden Sun 1 and 2 should be compiled and remaked for the Nintendo DS: Touch Screen controls, enhanced graphics, Wi-Fi Online battles, it would be awesome!!
ohh my god this need to shut up and dont complane about few lil things ya prick this was and is a rpg classic did you forget this is a freaking gameboy game golden sun is the best rpg game for the nintendo advance
WTF? How is this the Gamespot Review!? It may have similar themes, but I wrote this myself! I posted the original document months ago on my site! Your comment makes no sense!!!
60 hours jesus i beat it in 9 in my first playthough this is considerd sort for an rpg by most people but still a great game ps. i liked your review but you seemed to rush like u were nervous or somthing
I was reading from a script for the first time and I never heard the play back until editing. Also, the 60 hour thing was my own experience playing this game when I was 7 years old, s of course it had to take forever.
Yea, sure if you skip every damn piece of content, extra levels, items, and conversations. But check any damn review and they'll say 40+ hours. so stfu.
The actual main Storyline of games usually IS 9-20 hours. The longest game with JUST the storyline that I know of is TOS.
Now, with all the extra quests in, that's a completely different story. With all the extra quests, TOS is 100+ hours. So don't bitch because someone skipped the extra bonuses on a play through.
I don't see how this game was that difficult, I found the two Golden Sun games fairly easy but since you're talking about the first Golden Sun game I'd say that this was the easiest and shortest game. It took me two days to beat without leveling up that much. I was able to collect everything it had and beat the Fusion Dragon at level 24
come on dude...Its an RPG, your gunna have random battles. THIS does not take 2 steps back. Im not one of thos pissed guys that screams at people over youtube, but I don't think an RPG game shuld get a negative point for random battles.
It's not that. It's just when playing the game, which I have done for 42 hours now, it just annoys me sometimes that the story (which is my favorite part) is slowed dow with fights that have nothing to do with the storyline. Realistically, would you think that when the world is in peril, random bat that comes out of nowhere is going to attack you? Not likely. Besides, I actually apreciate the fighting, it's just the frequent random battles with random animals that pisses me off.
I understand that RPG's have random battles, but some are extremely necessary. For example, in Pokemon, you need to have random battles to train your Pokemon and to catch new ones. Like I said before, the random fighting in GS is not all that bad. I can be harsh sometimes, but that's just my opinion.
Also, You haven't seen random battles taken over the top until you've played an FF game (especially nine, not sure about the others).
These random battles are not only easy, but fun. Djinn make battles really easy, and you don't even have to summon, just unleash. You can change their status any time, making Random Battles really easy.
And how could anyone NOT like random battles? They had kick ass music.
Hey i just wanted to say great review that was awesome, just what i wanted to watch! I just subscribed and i agree with you because there are too many random battles when you try to get farther into the game and it gets you sorta annoyed!

No, it's Psy-nergy. Look at how it's spelled AND what it means. it's not refferring to Synergy, but energy from the mind.

it's pronounced sci-energy, not synergy.
BeGrunge 2 years ago
I always pronounced it scinergy. Is there an official pronunciation guide somewhere?
WarriorSeeker 2 years ago
really? i always thought it was synergy.

It's clearly not synergy based on spelling. Psynergy. Psychic-Psynergy. Not referring to synergy, lol.
