  • I guess I love to make myself cry! This brings back so many memories when my Dad was stationed there. Never thought I would say this but I am so glad that this place helped me be who I am today. Mom has passed now and my brother doesn't live close by. Dad and I spend our once a week dinners a lot of times recalling our time at Loring and all that snow! It still lives in my heart forever.~ Elizabeth Cusick (Loring resident from 77,78,79)

  • This is a very good video to remember when life was so simple.

  • Wow,well done.I was stationed there in the late 70's.

  • Was stationed there during my first enlistment 1987-1993, served as a crew chief on the mighty B-52G,,, went to war with my bomber (57-6488 - Shady Lady) I miss her so much, she was a great machine! I shed a tear as she went "wheels up" on her way to Davis Monthan after we returned from Diego Garcia, she has since had her wings clipped and is now being cut up for scrap... Sad to see her go...

    MSgt Ken Anderson (retired)

  • I lived there roughly 13 years with my parents. Left a lot of friends behind on base and at the junior high. Strange to see the way it is now compared to the way I remember it. All the walks we took to the store with my mom, and the bike rides to the pool with my best friend.

  • @smthlymn what years were you there and how old were you.

  • Thanks for memories. Tanker crew chief, stationed at Loring, 67 until 71. Lots of good times, and miss Loring. Don't miss the flightline in the winter. It is so sad that Loring has been closed. Great place to live, (if you like the cold). Thank you for the video..brings back time.

  • Thanks for the memories. Stationed at Loring 67 until 71. Never will forget the winters on the flightline. Kind of sad to see it closed. Lots of good people there.

I have to say, I miss being there, NOT the winters, but, just being at Loring.

  • I remember it well

  • Such A Shame For All !!!!! Employed Hard Working Men and Women,,,,

  • When I was 5 my family moved to Limestone/Caswell ME. This was in 1994 after the base had closed. I used to spend my summers just riding around the base on my bike with my friends. We would break into the old base housing and have the most awesome clubhouses. The best part was that no-one bothered us. It was the time of my life.

I want to go back there SOOOOO bad now, just to see what's still there. Oh how i miss 74 kids in my k-8 grade school in Caswell...

  • @tchdwnuga lol i grew up in those houses...google maps it and look at the satelite picture.. they leveled everything.

  • I was a member of the 42nd strategic hospital squadron. I remember going into Grand Falls and Madawaska to escape the cabin fever at the dorms. I stayed in bldg. 6250. i remember the bitter cold of winter. You could throw a cup of hot water in the air and it turn to snow before it hit the ground.

  • My dad, TSGT Edward Scroggs, was with 42nd Supply Squadron from 1958-62. We lived at 567 Meehan Dr, near the hospital. I have great memories of the ski slope, teen club, pool, ice rink, Carter Lake, Damon Elementary, potato harvest, Limestone HS, and the SNOW. It was the longest we stayed at any base. Mnay thanks for the video. Larry Scroggs

  • ok that made me cry. The ski chalet, damon, wish they wouldve shown the youth center. I was adopted at 6, in 73thought my new dad was a jerk. I can look back now and be grateful for the gift he gave us. what an amazing place to grow up.he instilled so much pride in me, made me proud to be an american. what I wouldnt give to go back in time and thank him for the lessons. graduated LHS in 86. Went back last fall, cried all through town. what a tremendous loss. Thanks to whoever made this video.

  • Great video. I was stationed at Loring from 1976 to 1980. Both my sons were born while we were at Loring. We lived in base housing on Wyoming Circle right next to the woods. We made some great friends and some great memories while there. Being from southern California, Loring was quite a shock. I had never seen negative temperatures or that much snow. I was a flight simulator tech and really liked my job and my co-workers. Overall, a great experience!

  • I lived at Loring 1977, 78 and 79. Three winters. I was an AF brat. My Dad was Col. Paul Cusick, Civil Enginering Comander. We thought we hated it there but my parents and I have some of the best memories of that God forsaken place. I am sorry that its in such sorry shape now. We made some of the best friends you could have there. I would really like to see it again and take my daughter there to see how cold it is and to see the snow and the potato fields!

  • Wow, I didn't realize what an emotional response I would have to this....

  • thats where i was born 1982

  • A lot of cool memories. I was there between 86 and 89, worked in supply and helped train the abse honor guard. If anybody remembers Dan J., drop me a line.

  • My sister was born at Loring we lived there from 1972-77. My first memories are of Loring and the woods around it. It was a time when kids could run around and be free, that's how I remember it. Ill never forget the day my dad said the C-5a(?) was coming. When it arrived we could see the talefin over the trees from our house.

Does anyone know if the area is now open to the public? I would like to make the trip this year from London to go back and photograph it.

  • Ya you can go anywhere you want to on the base ALOT of Buildings have been torn down many are still there mostly the older housing and some outbuildings the only 2 places you cant access are the New hospital which is now a DFAS building and your not "supposed " to be on the runway but I go up there sometimes in my car and ride around no one says anything to me ... there is a wildlife refuge on east loring w nature trails too

  • PS I live on the base now ... alot of poeple do .. some of the newer housing was sold and is now rented out .... tennsee circle and manser drive and a block of apts on Virginia Place

  • The gear retracted before the plane was ready to lift off & the thing slid on its' belly to a stop. Would of been cool to see but happened before I got there. It flew again before I left. SAC trivia: Loring & Ellsworth were the only 2 bases w/the Arch hangar.

  • After 6 yrs. at Ellsworth I was reassigned to Loring & arrived there in Apr. of '86. Left in Oct. '87. Jet mech., 42 FMS. This video jogs the memory. I remember how the flightline layout was so much different than Ellsworth. An eyeopener is seeing the overgrown grass in front of the Arch hangar. When I first arrived there was a G model in there (0484?) being rebuilt. It had failed to get airborne due to erronious landing gear switches installed.

  • Wow! Thanks for the memories. What was and what is is hard to see after being gone for so many years. Was back 5 years ago and was in shock to see it how it is now. I am glad some of the buildings have been put to use. But the majority were gone or needed to be torn down.

    Loved your video!! Thanks again.

  • My first job after high school (1954), was for the 42nd Supply Squadron. Worked there until 1956. Left for awhile then came back to work for the 3080th until I left for NYC in 1959. Enjoyed working there.

  • I was 19 when that closed, my first year of air force training at BIA, you SAC people deserve respect. I only had one crazy year with it young as a noob crew chief. AMC is quite human in comparison. all the SAC alerts, launches, hours of sitting. salute...and that weather. holy crap. It didn't even document north american records broken.

  • Thanks for the memories. I was stationed at Loring from 81-84. KC135A Tanker Crew Chief. To the person who wrote in the comments, Gene Schaff was my First SGT there. Anyone remember J.J. Kovach? Phil McDonough, RC Timm, Ray Moody... Lee Mulkey is down in Tn... what ever happened to JR Doyle?

  • very many memories there my dad was stationed there from 88-92 and man i loved it,,,great video....post more video

  • I loved it!

Thanks for the sweet memories. I was only stationed there 1 year (1980-1981). I remember they'd have to dig a tunnel to the door of the AMS squadron and airmen would park their snowmobiles on the roof, slide down the hill and walk in! Ah, it's good to be in California! Thanks, again and God Bless!

  • Great Video!! I had not seen any photos of Loring since I left in 1972 Brought back alot of fond memories. I was in the Plumbing shop with some very fine folks. I miss it !!! Thanks Fred Schilling

  • Great Video, Thank you.

    It Brought Back Great Memories.

I worked in the Control Tower (81-84).

Great Scenery and Very nice People.

  • I was back "home" to Loring this summer, how I loved and still do love, Limestone, and Caribou.. Talked to a couple of friends that i havent talked to in over 20 years, and after only a few minutes together, it felt like we had been together the whole time ! I hope to be back there shortly ! I missed seeing jean and seeing Della was as intoxicating as it was the first time I had met her. And how Heather...aka"pumpkin" had grown into such a beautiful young woman, astounded me

  • Dad was stationed there in 1970. I went to the school there and then on to Limestone HS for 9 and part of 10th grade. I do NOT miss all that snow though. :)

  • Thanks for the video. I was stationed there from 1971 to 1973 in the 42nd Supply Squadron.

  • wish they never closed it down almost killed the surrounding towns but owell not like the goverment thinks of those things .....miss all the friends i used to have in skyway middle school back in the day....

  • i agree! i live in limestone and there is NOTHING here anymore!! honestly, the only thing we have going is the school.. and they're talking about shutting it down and sending the kids to caribou school. the only thing we have is the school, a grocery store and 2 gas stations. haha

  • @moowin I live in an area that used to depend on two AFB's, and is within an hours drive of several USMC and USN bases, and I supported the closing of unnecessary old bases. US towns and cities shouldn't be supported by a base, its a bad form of welfare in my opinion. "Most" bases in the US were long past their usefulness, old WWII-era bases especially. It IS sad when a town has hard times, but spending trillions on the military just so they can run non-military aide is a bad idea.

  • @OPE08

Is the money going to a better place now? If these bases were kept alive and our military stayed home and concentrated on protecting our country from within perhaps this country would be a better place.

  • @d4243 - No, of course not, the problem is worse in US Bases operating in foreign Nations, on top of that the drastic increase in military funding since 9/11 to fight in Iraq.

We should have far less of a foreign presence, but that doesn't justify keeping open bases that exist originally because a WWI bomber had a short range. Bases along the border states, and within short-hop range of coastal ports make sense.

  • My 1st job after HS graduation in 1954 was at Loring. Meeting all those "flyboys" from all over the US opened my mind to so many things including being introduced to jazz which led to my going to NYC to further my education. Very good memories!

  • Wow great video. Memories Memories I was 42SPS from 78-81 I lost the keys to the bomber my first night in the bomber area (That was an inside security joke for new comers) Went back yesterday in fact first time since I had left what a shock. Was on my harley and rode right down the flight line and swept back in time! And I was going way to fast when I came to! Thanks again!

  • I was in the 42nd sps at Loring from 80-81.I don't remember much except the cold winters. I remember being in the storage area the night John Lennon was killed.

  • I was late for my first taxi exercise there as a brand-new B-52G EWO on 07 September 1977. Boy was that ever embarrassing. Then I wore 3 silver stars on my collar during a MASH party at the O-Club which resulted in a visit from Wing Commander Marion Tidwell himself. Then my girlfriend got really drunk whilst dancing with Col. Robert B. Strain and I had to retrieve her from his arms before she went completely unconscious. Those were the days.

  • Tidwell was my next door neighbor...!

  • During the MASH party I was at the bar with some friends when a figure approached from the left, breathed on my 3 silver stars and buffed them with his coat sleeve. It was the man himself.

  • I grew up in Caribou 60s-70s, will always remember those B-52s and Tankers flying overhead all hours of the night and day,

  • MEMORIES!! Sad to think of your 'home' not being there anymore. Best time of my life, think of it often. '75 - '79
