  • I do not know the gup ranking but that is great that you understand the ranking of escalation of force. Good for you and thank you for watching , your points and commenting.

  • even as a 10th gup practitioner (aka threat to nothing my size or bigger) i was taught that escalation of force.

punch= counter and run, not inflict life-long, crippling injury.

  • @DTGtaihojutsu My first teacher told me one day that the pain you feel when you practice joint locks with a partner, and the pain you feel when you punch the Makiwara board, is the same pain your opponent feels. and that when you are defending yourself you aren't just effecting them your effecting mothers fathers friends, sisters and brothers..

  • @stompySharpNpointy Mike your first teacher was very right. Thanks for the comment.

  • I did not see this in my subscriptions. This was very thought evoking. Bustobiwan had told me about your conversation and I think you are a good person to tackle this topic. I agree with so many of your thoughts on what to teach kids and not using your skills to abuse others.

  • @DanBowenTV The K Man asked if I could make this video so I tried my best Dan. It was a hard topic but I enjoyed doing it Thanks for watching and your comment.

  • Sent a "comment" via PM =3

  • @Loyal2law I know Jay I am going to read it now . I was trying to get caught up with people I am subbed to to watch their vids and give them props. I also answered some P.M's and saw your response this morning but wanted to take time tonight to read it in detail. Like the home email too on the blind man video.

  • @Loyal2law part 2- got the two P.M's an excellent read and I answered you back bro. Thanks again Jay.

  • @DTGtaihojutsu You're very welcome =D! I thought that replying in a comment box isn't enough to get my response across, w/c is why I send a PM, & commented here just to verify, in case you missed it XD.

  • Very good points! I am saddened by the story of the man trying to preserve his wife's honor. I am further saddened that he was simply preyed upon because he was seen as a target. It is one of our duties as martial artists to stop predators by either reforming them or by using our more forceful abilities to do so. Many of us have turned to the martial arts to learn how to protect ourselves as much as others because we too have been preyed upon at a young age.

  • @Greatbear1982 part 2 Also, your point on excessive force is very good. When I teach, I like the technique to have the full range of escalation from component to component. The first move may be to block, the next may be to block and strike to the head. Third, a throw, fourth, a finishing move. (come to think of it I need to modify some of my videos captions to reflect this to not portray the wrong idea...)

  • @Greatbear1982 part 3 Thank you for sharing this video with us it does give us all food for thought. It was said by an native american chief that there are two wolves inside of us all that fight for dominance one good, one evil. Someone asked him,"which one wins?" The chief replied "The one you feed the most."

  • @Greatbear1982 Joel all three posts were excellent I especially like the quote from the Chief , the one you feed the most. You always provide excellent posts thank you sir. As for the guys the day they told me the story the biggest bragger wanted to do some full contact sparring some 10 years ago. He went full out and I am like Balboa not the greatest at ducking but can take a punch hence my good looks NOT!!! LOL. I told him to take it easy he refused so I chased him around the ring cont-

  • @Greatbear1982 part 2- I cautioned him again to take it easy so we do not kill each other he still wanted to show off so I got him in a corner cocked back and threw my punch knocking him out cold. I checked on him woke him up with some salts and got him on his feet and we never spoke again. He moved to another area of our country on his third marriage. The rest have had bad luck. I am not into bullies. Nor humiliating people. I believe in sportmanship. Thanks again Joel much appreciated Sensei.

  • TU! Good points! really sad about your former friends being bullies and throwing their weight around like that.

  • @wmpyr well my friend that term what goes around comes around happened to them some are sick , some are on numerous marriages paying child support and in financial trouble. I do not want to see anyone sick but I guess in some ways we pay for our sins. Thanks for watching Sensei.

  • @DTGtaihojutsu thats too bad, they probably don't realize that their character probably has a lot to do with their current unhappiness.

  • Wonderful video Rick, thank you always for the inspiration and friendship

  • @TheDemzlyChannel Duane one of our you tube friends asked if I could make this video and I tried my best it was a hard topic to talk on. Sensei Wmpyr has asked me to talk about bad incidents with martial artists and I have tons of stories to share. I may in the future. As said with great power comes great responsibility. Thanks for watching brother and you inspire me as well and are a great friend. Thanks for your comment.

  • Excellent video Rick and very well said!

  • @RoaringTiger281 Thank you David , nice to hear from you bro.

  • that was a great question and indepth vid too. yeah I have been the overkill guy, and even the bully on the internet and in the dojo and streets, have been bullied too. I choose to be the laidback guy now because I see it is better. I accept more people now I learn more because I have a really open mind-- even to hatters.

that really brought back memories of my kickboxing days when you talked about the three techniques you had. mine were the spinning backfist and round kick.

    peace

  • @smirkdancer BUST0BIWAN'S question and request for me to make this video was great and I owe him. I think we all look back at our past mistakes Sensei Geer and as we get older we mature and see the error of our ways. Thank you for the comment , points and watching. Nice to hear in your kickboxing days that you had your set of techniques that worked for you. Cheers.

  • Part 2: You should know a core group of techniques well enough that you don't even have to think about using them - they become an autonomic response. In my art (firearms) one should never have to actively think about how to draw their weapon, remove the safety, aim the weapon etc. That should all happen in the blink of an eye if the need arises - THAT is why we PRACTICE. One of my instructors said it best - "Beware the man with only one gun, he probably knows how to use it".

  • @Harpmaker44 Part 2- The longer their response time in reacting. So with your saying "Beware the man with only one gun, he probably knows how to use it" That is very true. Thanks for your comments my friend, points and watching.

  • Another great video Rick! I know I keep saying that, but I mean it every time. There needs to be more videos like this one to try and balance out the irresponsible MA videos like you mentioned that show a totally inappropriate amount of force for a push or shove. In fact that could be a new series of vids that you and Mark could do. It needs to be demonstrated as well as talked about.

I totally agree on the "Master a few techniques rather than simply knowing many" deal. ...Continued.

  • @Harpmaker44 You know what Don , Mark is coming over soon to help me make videos. I do not run a commercial dojo and even my private students it has been hard for us to maintain our core group due to all of our busy conflicting work shifts. We all are the closest of friends and stay in touch though. I think I will mention this to Mark your idea and work off of BUST0BIWAN'S idea . The more things you tell someone they can use in a bad situation. Cont-

  • I would have listened for 60 minutes if that would have been the length of the video because i find that i am learning new things. I agree with all of your points (like i don't want friends that do not respect other people, kids should be taught some simple basics of martial arts without going into the dangerous techniques and that it is better to leave the situation as it is rather than escalating the verbal argument unless it is to protect ourselves from injury or our close ones) God Bless !

  • @VickThorrable Vick I am glad you like the videos and that you would sit through me talking for an hour. I learn things from all of you guys and girls as well through comments, videos etc. Thank you so much for watching , your points and commenting.

  • cont...i was irresponsible with what i knew and used it without due reason and that's how i learnt about consequences. I think a better comparison in regards to martial arts should be to any other academic pursuit, a true martial artist is one that studies the varying uses of violence by the human body in a non competitive arena which i think is what the 'art' refers to because you don't need to be a martial artist to defend yourself or to hurt someone, prisons aren't full of 'artists'.

  • @BUST0BIWAN I do not know if I am awesome but thanks brother. I tried my best for you to make this vid and just say it from my heart. Thanks for your idea, your points in this comment and watching.

  • Cont.. but i won't teach you about consequences of action, ideally children should never learn martial arts because it should be for combat purposes only and that's what adults are for but the world isn't ideal is it. I once when i was younger was at a party very drunk and accepted a challenge to fight, i ended up wrenching this poor guy's arm badly enough that i heard it start to tear i immediately let go and instantly regretted it, last time heard, his shoulder still has problems because of me

  • @LosBats part 3- as we get older we realize things we have done in the past and our mistakes just the fact that you regret your past actions and see that it was wrong shows you have become a better martial artist. Thanks for the comments brother. Your points and watching.

  • @DTGtaihojutsu I apologize if it seemed like i was blaming the man for what is clearly predatory behaviour which wasn't my intention, i misinterpreted the story.

  • @LosBats do not apologize brother I did not tell the story in it's entirety so I am a bad story teller :( I always appreciate your comments and words of advice. You are top notch in my books. I should have explained the predatory type behaviour more. It was just so long of a video and it took me about 5 takes to get out what I wanted to say that I left it as is. At least due to our discussion in comments people can read the whole story right. I winged it after work with no notes.

  • I have known of higher Dan that have been adulterous or started street fights or are basically bullies in the dojo. In asian countries no one cares how many dan you have or what skills you know (unless your job requires it) but us westerners because of the nuances in culture of Japan, Korea, china etc tricked ourselves in believing that there is an ethical nature or spirituality to martial arts which I believe to be false, we tell kids not to fight but then say here go learn how to break arms...

  • @LosBats part 2= why should I have to leave with my family due to some idiots that should be kicked out by the restaurant owners. I agree in the sense maybe the guy could have just avoided it but he could not even enjoy his dinner. I should have told the story in full he did not go the parking garage to fight they followed him to his car and then it began.

  • Regarding to the humiliation of that man, really that man had no business getting out of his seat to fight, his humiliation was avoidable i know it's easy to say but his ego got in the way. Those former friends of yours were martial artists in that they were effective in the use of the techniques the myth is that anyone that trains in the martial arts is automatically someone of higher character which in my experience is not accurate at all. cont.....

  • @LosBats Edwin that man never got out of his chair , these so called martial artists that I once knew were in an expensive restaurant and were drunk as can be being idiots in the restaurant the man was just sitting there having to listen to vulgar language and inappropriate comments about his wife. All he said was for them to calm down and they took him to fight. If someone was saying inappropriate things to my family I would do the same it is not ego. cont

  • Everyday I practice a wingchun/akido mix techniqe that works for me and i have all these little angles i practice on my wooden dummy.

I can perform it perfectly on a real person in real time.

Practiced lots of other stuff a few times.......never turns out right when i try to perform it...mmmmmm?

    take care be safe

sorry for so many comments but had a lot to say.

  • @Gremlinshag John I welcome tons of comments and due to the 500 character limit you sometimes have to leave tons of comments so no worries at all. I wanted this to be discussed and others learn from reading comments. You gave excellent points and I appreciate it very much. I like your explanation about the wing chun dummy and the techniques you practice everyday. Well said my friend.

  • Just like Ninjutsu ...Martial arts is about self preserverance and protecting oneself from harm ..

always being prepared and staying away from danger in the first place!

if that be a physical fight or in a more broad scale such as warzones ..purpose is to avoid!

or a survival situation of any sort..but again thats the only time it should be used.

  • I realy liked all the thoughts. i discussed this topic a couple of times myself.

To go all out and become the most skilled set and master of all martial arts....

or become the best at one martial art.

Also .....the stuff about when to use your martial skills...i agree it should only be in the line of self defense should someone apply any form of deadly force, self preserverance..

    or to protect a life.

  • wll said keep it up

  • @pool19389 Thank you I will try my best.

  • Hello! That is very well said in my opinion! I very much agree with you 100%.....My own experience is seeing people/beginners particularly getting so into a joint manipulation, grapple and lock (technique) and not thinking of the outcome. They tend to be un-caring on how much pressure they apply to their partner and end-up dislocating their training partner,I have witnessed this so many times.Alot of those learning nowadays just exploit and have no concept in the code of ethics in Martial Arts .

  • @brijseeker Thanks for your points I agree with everything you said. People sometimes complain about the old strict ways of training but they had merit to them. I have to be honest I was afraid of my teachers when I first started out they were very strict. Classes were regimented. You hurt someone on purpose then you dealt with the teacher and were banned from the school. Now it is just about the money and who can you bring in the door. People do not care it is all about them nowadays. Thanks

  • @DTGtaihojutsu Thanks also my friend,Many years ago I was searching for a place to continue my training after moving halfway around the world. So I sat at this school from 6 am to 6pm to observe.I noticed that some out there tried showing all these deadly moves to people to entice them into school.I realized these people didnt care at all! It was all a businesss to them.In "comparissons".its like those who learn just to do pressure point locks but never learned how to aleviate pain afflicted.

  • GOOD VIDEO BROTHER :)

  • @hlb101 Thanks so much Sifu Emil.

  • You give a little bit more back than you receive when you are attacked in my eyes. GOOD VIDEO MAN! AND NO YOUR PASSED FRIENDS WERE NOT TRUE MARTIAL ARTISTS EITHER! "the art they have learned will fade from them with them out even noticing it"

  • @Hikik0m0riHimitsu I hope it fades from them since one should never abuse their skills to harm others. Yes you are right they are not my friends anymore. Thank you for watching and commenting.

  • most excellent Rick

  • @unclecow Thank you Josh I appreciate it.

  • I don't know if anyone else has this problem, but I always have problems with teaching people things and have them used for the wrong reasons. It's starting to be so common that I'm hesitant in teaching. this goes for wisdom, life knowledge also, along with religion and martial arts. It seems like a lot of people have a hard time dealing with their own demons and by us teaching them, we're making things worst. Anyone has any advice? I want to pass my knowledge down but not sure how to do it...

  • @GetDamage I have had it where I think someone is a solid individual and when doing semi contact sparring they get popped to the nose and go ballistic and show that they do not have the temperment for the arts and I have had to kick them out. They actually want to start a real fight in the school which is unacceptable so yes I have had the same problem. I only prefer showing things to family and dear friends privately whom I know and can trust. Thanks for watching and commenting.

  • Mae geri for the win!!

  • @GetDamage Yes Mae Geri for the win !!!

  • your rigth miss use of the skill not rigth we should not fall in to that we should training and use the skill when we really attack to figth off people would do harm us or others your video make lot of sence thumb up

  • @blackswordshinobi Thanks Billy you are right we should only use our skill when we are really attacked. Thanks for watching your points and commenting.
