@thespotteddog Best Picture - Terms of Endearment, Best Actor - Robert Duvall: Tender Mercies, Best Supporting Actor - Jack Nicholson: Terms of Endearment.
Starman one of the Jeff Bridges best films in my opinion a sci fi with heart a great film from the eighties that ranks along side ET Cocoon and many others a great decade for family films The score just grips you on a deep level. I hope they don't do a remake except if was done by someone who understood the original and Jeff and maybe Karen was on board. There was a series done by the way starring Robert Hays ( airplane) .
I think that they were very definitely trying to describe a similarity to J***s here- a man coming from above, impregnating a woman, and going back, leaving his unborn son as a teacher? very obvious
Why would anyone want to waste all that money producing a remake of this classic? It happened with "The Italian Job" totally missed the point! The original was a film celebrating everything that was good and comical about us here in the U.K. at that time in the 60's........and there was a lot about us to laugh at!
Remember....."You're only supposed to blow the bloody doors off!"
@junction666 "The Italian Job" remake was an OK movie in it's own right, but you are definitely right in stating that the original had a totally different "feel"- they just wanted to do a remake, which is SOP in Hollywood
@junction666 and if they made a remake of "Starman" they would focus on SFX and creature effects, ignoring everything that made the original appealing to it's own generation (similar to Carpenter's "The Thing")
@TheGoldcountry yup like Star Wars episodes 1-3. Yes, the original trilogy was big, of course, largely due to the special effects that were groundbreaking for that time, but what made it really special was the casting and the chemistry between the actors. I think that was the real magic and the heart that was lost with the new trilogy.
@pdoll96 Truth is you don't need great SFX, the film's qualities should shine through past dodgy puppets and models. It's like when my mate keeps going on about Blu-Ray Blu-ray Blu-ray, you gotta get everything in Blur-ray. If the film's good enough I'll watch it on VHS or Betamax. If at the end of the film, all people can talk about is SFX then it was much of a film (Avatar!) Which is why I generally hate remakes. I can't think of one that out did the original.
@kpsuk agree--I still own a VCR and still watch movies on it. Even though I own DVD's and a couple of Blueray. Good movies are just good and don't need to be magnified so you can see the definition on every blade of grass.
@TheGoldcountry I agree. The appeal of Starman (for me) is that it's so understated. If they polished it up with special effects, it would lose its charm. It's great just the way it is!
i just watched this movie, had not seen it in over 10yrs, i am moved to tears, what a true treasure, it is amazing how this movie will last forever. i can only brag about it and have turned so many younger people on to it. everyone says thanks for making me cry. lol perhaps one of the rarest hollywood gems ever thank you jeff, karen and john carpenter for this treasure
dear Hollywood, stop making stupid commercial remakes of 80's classics. Its not about the popcorn, nor about beautiful actors or spectacular scenes, it's about real actors, original stories and movies with soul, such as this one.
Why the hell is everybody talking about a remake this film is perfect. They don't need to remake it. And by the way Cinder90 Starman crash landed on earth and needs to get to the crater in three days or he'll die. He did not come to study humans that's why he is always in a car not trying to get to Arizona not going out asking the people of earth questions. sorry I just had to point that out.

I re-watched this movie a few days ago (after about 20 years) and I was crying like a baby. The story is so damn touching and beautiful and it has such believeable characters that I had to BAWL my eyes out. And the music is just AWESOME! A little treasure of movie history and now one of my favourites.
This film always makes me cry , and the them music is just wonderful, Karen Alen was so good for the part , and Jef was wonderful , both of them are such great actors , I love them both
It's sad to think today's generation will never see this movie. So powerful, so moving. If anyone wanted to see a movie about true love, it would be this one... I am a 24-year-old guy, known to be tough and hard as nails, but this brought me to tears in a way nothing ever has. I thank Jeff, Karen, Carpenter and everyone involved for teaching me what it is to be human. Love each other, or perish.
In England The advertisers have jumped on this as a money thrifting piece of music.
so congratulations to all of us who knew that this was a ground breaking movie like Blade Runner all these critics who could not understand the moralistic message eat your words it will become a classic a Film Noir.
I was very much alive when this film was released. Only... youth is wasted on the young. It was memorable but years spent as an adult, seeing and living the hardships this fallen world has, has given a profound perspective on this masterpiece of film and music. I've watched this film like four times this year - if you have premium cable catch it on the "HDNet Movies" channel. It's a revelation to see, and hear, this wayyyyy under-appreciated piece of art in High Def. I tear up often watching it.
@Buzz0Killington The script for Starman was written well before ET, but got delayed due to budget concerns. However, the script was well known within the Hollywood community, so it can be said that ET ripped off the Starman one to begin with.
im glad somebody posted up the real song! this is a real song! not the trash i heard recently by Dan Black called Symphonies ft kid cudi. kids are saying how oh its the best ever but dont even realize that this is the real song and this movie is where it came from. i really am disappointed when i see or hear about all these bullshit remakes. i guess originality went out the window with the generation of brain dead sheep who dont know who they are so they copy others and fail even at that.
I've seen this film so many times over the years and every time I wel up and bawl like a baby. This music is what I would difine as musical orgasm. It,s so touching, it, so unbelievably emmotional!!!!
@JusanothaUtuba That would be so awsome to re-make this movie, remember at the end "she has baby" !!! Could start from there and progress into something magical!
@VirtualMan007 A remake? What? I do not understand why there are remakes of real treasures. Do that is like buying a jewel in a gift shop. This movie is more than a classic and it is not necessary to remake anything. It is just perfect and it would be the only one to remember.
Starman, based on my personal opinion is one of the best movies ever made. It combines a wonderful and heartfelt love story with intrigue and suspense. The music score is unparalled in creating an atmosphere that simply reaches a deep emotional level to its viewer. Jenny Hayden explaining what love is, the resurrected deer, the gift of a child to a unfertile Jenny, the Starman's explanation as to the uniqueness of the human species, the ending scene are difficult to top in cinematic productio
@Sokram1987 no reason for this movie to be remade. If you like it, explore something with the same theme. Don't remake a movie that succeeded in telling it's own story.
This is a beautiful movie, with a beautiful theme. Saw it when I was a kid, loved it then and love it now. BTW does this music make anyone else (besides me) cry? Love it. Thanks for posting.
@lynkynparc1 I agree---the movie's a true testament to the power of love, and done with such emotion that you can't believe you're watching a sci-fi film! I remember seeing it when I was a pre-teen, and to this day, I still cry at the end! Ball like a baby :)
Looking at the stars in the night sky, seeing the world sitting silently all around me - this music in the back of my mind - I just know that people like Starman exist somewhere among those little points of light up there...
Thank God I wrote something about My memories some six months ago or something.. Now I can cry and read your stories. Crying is beatiful in right causses, and every cause is worth it. Buddha
I have to say, Jeff Bridges did a perfect job acting in this film. He was so great I couldn't tell if he was really human or an alien. LOL. He was extremely hot and handsome. I loved the movie.
Great movie great song. It's too bad we as a whole of humanity don't apply the message of peace that the Starman came to deliver. Imagine what we could accomplish if we only did this?
Looking at the summation of John Carpenter's work, this is arguably his best film. Great musical score and wonderful performances by Jeff Bridges and Karen Allen.
I've always said - the finest cinema, the finest soundtracks, the finest movie inspired dreams, the finest originality of thought - it all came out in the Eighties. This film & all within & about it has eternally embellished itself in my mind. Starman to I personifies a being of God. One Face One Race. Knowledge is strength. Peace is Power. Starman taught I this when I was a kid. Glad that I was a child in the mid to late Eighties. To know Starman firsthand is truly grand as a child!! Thank You.
I hoped to hear the scene where Starman imitates Sinatra who said he heard 'symphonies from the universe.' when he was a child. I also recall Sinatra sang the lyric from 'The Night We Called It A Day' ' ...I heard the song of the spheres, like a minor lament in my ears...'
This is such an eerie melody. After hearing this I felt sad and oddly enough, checked on all me kids. Loved the Orion constellation with the falling star at the end. Great movie, great soundtrack.
I saw this movie in England back in1985 and decided I would visit the Meteor crater at Winslow in 91. From there I went to Globe AZ and met some people who became and remain close friends. been back there 7 times now. Seeing this film has changed my life. Thanks for posting.
It goes deeper Whilst in Globe AZ I met up with a school teacher. She invited me to go to her school (Copper Rim) to talk with her pupils. I thought it would be nice to arrange a pen pal thing with my local school in England. The teacher of the class I talked to and I got on very well. So well in fact we have been married for 17 years now . If I had not seen Starman I would not have been to see the Meteor crater at Winslow or to Globe. So this film changed my life in a big way .
@leahall That's even better! I'm English too, and always had the crazy idea that I would eventually meet and fall for an American woman who loved movies and music like STARMAN as much as I did, and you sort of went and did it for real! I'm 37 now so I hope it flipping happens to me soon! Congratulations and all the best from Ireland where I'm currently residing!
A truely beautiful and timeless piece of music and I love it so much. I've been searching for it since I'd heard it sampled and mixed in with the drum beat of Rihanna's song umbrella. The combined mix of the 2 sounds was used for a recent broardband commercial on UK television (to great affect I might add). I knew the harmony was from something I knew then low and behold starman comes on the tv like 3 days ago and boom! I remember where I heard it before. Weird how things can happen like that.
this is truly sweet fuckin music but unfortunately i just heard it being raped on an english tv advert for virgin media, they added a "cool" beat to it. but for me its the chords,it is basic human language of love
@animalzarg i quite like the virgin media advert, its actually a song called symphonies by dan black which you are right does use the basic instrumental from starman theme abd the "cool" drum beat is from Rhianna "umbrella". Dan Black merged the 2 songs togther to create quite a good melody i think. My opinion
Bernard Alfred ("Jack") Nitzsche (Chicago, April 22, 1937 - Hollywood, August 25, 2000), the integral presence in the history of popular music in the 20th century. The composer of this masterpiece
A beautiful piece of music by Jack Nietzche. Even if it wasn't the theme for a moving, sweet film, it would still feature on my list of 'Tingle Tunes' - pieces of music, that when heard, haul your neck hair skywards. Always loved this tune.
Anyone know if this track can be downloaded ?? I don't want to buy the complete sound track only this one. Love the film and when ever I hear this piece of music it gives me goose bumps just like the first time I heard it as a kid.
So good. I agree Karen Allen is one of the most beautiful women to ever grace the big screen. Totally flawless. A great film, which holds so much emotion, something which todays blockbusting special effects will never be able to recreate. I first watched this film as an open eyed 8 year old. I'm now in my 30's and it still holds a place in my top sci fi films of al time. Simply a great movie.
This brings back so many memories..i heard an ad today with this soundtrack and several of us were huddled in a corner banging heads and could we remember the name of the movie...I've watched it 10 times at least lol...A movie with a message and a beautiful story and a great sound score
Thanks for uploading. This was one of my dads favourite movies i had forgotten all about it, he died over 12 years ago I remember watching this flim loads of times with him when i was a kid you brought back some happy childhood memories...... THANK YOU
I have the John carpenter version and it is quite long. And you only get to hear a snippet before buying the track. Promise you it is the same. It is 5.35 mins long.
Awesome track! Can you buy it on iTunes? I've done a search and there are some rip-off versions in 'chill-out' albums, and theres an album "The Essential John Carpenter Theme" but the sample doesn't sound like this and its nowhere near as long :-( Please help!
I rank this film along with some of the best - one of my favorites. Its one of those that no matter how many times I watch it I just cant resist it again. Like 'Contact' , Avatar, V-for Vendetta - there are many great films but very few like these. The music is a superb 'haunting' piece as are so many of his - together with John Williams they rule the movie theme industry.
Jeff Bridges has come full circle...He did some awesome movies during the 80's and was very popular, now fast forward to today and he is extremely popular and doing mega-awesome movies...pretty cool.
This movie is one of-if not- his best though...very special movie and the music is just mind blowingly great!
A remake starring Paris Hilton and Justin Bieber! IN 3D!

This is such an eerie melody. After hearing this I felt sad and oddly enough, checked on all me kids. Loved the Orion constellation with the falling star at the end. Great movie, great soundtrack.
Kudos for the upload.

I saw this movie in England back in1985 and decided I would visit the Meteor crater at Winslow in 91. From there I went to Globe AZ and met some people who became and remain close friends. been back there 7 times now. Seeing this film has changed my life. Thanks for posting.

@leahall That's fantastic!

@GodzookySnr
So this film changed my life in a big way .
leahall 6 months ago

Weird how things can happen like that.

this is truly sweet fuckin music but unfortunately i just heard it being raped on an english tv advert for virgin media, they added a "cool" beat to it. but for me its the chords,it is basic human language of love
animalzarg 11 months ago 2
@animalzarg i quite like the virgin media advert, its actually a song called symphonies by dan black which you are right does use the basic instrumental from starman theme abd the "cool" drum beat is from Rhianna "umbrella". Dan Black merged the 2 songs togther to create quite a good melody i think. My opinion

A beautiful piece of music by Jack Nietzche. Even if it wasn't the theme for a moving, sweet film, it would still feature on my list of 'Tingle Tunes' - pieces of music, that when heard, haul your neck hair skywards. Always loved this tune.

I must admit I totally fell in love with Karen Allen when I saw this film.A natural beauty. She still looks great at 60.
