ESPN NFL Countdown had a flashback on this game today with Bill Parcells providing his memories.
I think what was most memorable about this game was when after Bahr hit the game-winning field goal, Pat Summerall said "There will be no three-peat."
It was Roger Craig who after Super Bowl XXIV began the "three-peat" chant. And it was his fumble in this game that essentially destroyed the opportunity. One of the greatest exercises in hubris that I witnessed.
But the other game to be played Sunday, Ravens-Patriots, has interesting parallels with the 1990 NFC title game. Ray Lewis and Tom Brady are viewed as the best players on their side of the ball in this century while L.T. and Montana were seen just the same in the '80s.
Also, Bill Belichick was a Giants assistant at this 1990 playoff game, a game broadcasted by CBS. On Sunday, you'll find Belichick and CBS (and yes, Phil Simms) in the Ravens-Patriots battle.
I think about this game and rivalry quite often. This is the first time I recall security being an issue for an NFL game (Persian Gulf War). As a Bears fan with a nostalgic mindset, I've always disliked those old adversaries like the Giants, 49ers, and Redskins, and I have to admit that I still see them as teams to keep up with as much as the Packers, Saints, Steelers, etc.
There was a great deal of buzz and anticipation about a Saints-Packers NFC title game this season. 21 years ago, there was similar anticipation over a certain matchup for the conference finale which did turn out to happen unlike this year where instead of Saints vs. Packers we will see, yes, Giants vs. 49ers.
I know dude... Trying to take defense out of the game... it's made the offensive numbers go up ridiculously.... It all started with the dam no touch rule and it all went down hill from there.... I"m sorry but football is a contact sport... Not 2 hand touch... You can make certain rules for safety but you can't go too far like Goodell has ... The game is like the NBA now with LOTS of offense...
I have the game on tape. Watched it live when I was 16. They say time heals all wounds, but this game still hurts and when I think about the game. It will leave a bad taste in my mouth until the day I die. That shot by Marshall ended the Montana led 49er dynasty. I've never watched the game again since, even though it was a great game. @montana5526 TY! considering Leonard Marshall wasn't ejected after he bodyslammed Montana. the LEAST trhe NFL should do to make up for it is strip the Giants of the '90 NFC trophy. yeah i know it will probably never happen but that was a pretty ugly hit.

@optimus2g . Yeah as a Niner fan, I have to admit that the 49ers were out coached and out played this game. We were so close to a three peat. No team will ever come so close
@MuayThaiFighter2009 You have nothing to be ashamed of though. Te 49ers were a great, great organization. If I had to start a team with an owner, coach, and QB, they would all be 49ers: Eddie DeBartolo, Bill Walsh, and of course Joe Montana. They knew what they were doing over there. Great teams and rivalries. Those were the days as Bill Walsh said. The Redksins, Bears, 49ers, and Giants were all superteams.
@mets1617 This is by far the best low scoring game I've ever watched. Dramatic game from start to finish with great defences and offences that were moving the ball until they got near the red zone, where the defences did not break. One of the most intense and exciting games I've ever watched despite the 15-13 final score which would make people think otherwise.
The two most painful losses in 49er history, #1 90 Championship against the Giants and #2 Viking loss in 87. But, that is what football is all about, you can't win every year and all of these teams were collections of champions. The Bears, Redskins, 49ers, Giants, Vikings, Eagles, Rams, these were all NFC powerhouses in the 80's. Fun to watch.
As a 49ers fan, this is the most GUT WRENCHING LOSS in team history just ahead of the Vikings in the 1987 Divisional Round. The 49ers were oh SOOO CLOSE to winning 4 Super Bowls in a row from 1987-1990. Still the run in NFL History from 1981-2002.
@jbsmg The Viking loss was the 2nd worse in franchise history. That game almost felt supernatural the way things transpired. The next 3 games against the Vikes were so important, the Young game, then the 2 next years of divisional playoffs.
@jbsmg we took that loss extremely hard . We knew the Vikes were really 8-4 in non strike games and dangerous but entering that post season we were the best team in football and were murdering teams. That sent shock waves throught the Bay Area and was a stunner and for me the 2nd most painful loss , '90 3peat loss worst ever. It was very satisfying beating Minn badly the next 2 years in the playoffs. But '87 was a bitter loss
This was the game that made me hate the Giants for what I thought would be forever... fast forward several years, the Giants beat the 18-0 pats in the superbowl... slate is wiped clean.
Here's looking for a competitive season for both the Giants and the 49ers.
Any Giants fans willing to say what went wrong last season, every time I caught them they looked pretty good. However I'm on the record stating that the niners go 10-6 this season and make it to the playoffs and then are 1 and done.
One thing I'm curious about. From watching BillCody1960's clips from the AFC title game, some comments pointed out that NBC keep switching from the game to NBC News coverage of the Gulf War.
For this game, did CBS do the same or did they show the whole game and devote a specific period of time elsewhere to war coverage (similar to ABC using the halftime break for the Gulf War update for the Super Bowl)?
@Market42Fan I have the DVD, from what i remember, there were two interuptions in the 2ndQ. One came out of a buildbord and just before the two min warning. No action was missed as someone held up the game. As for half, CBS did a report the first segment before going back to SF. Also CBS did a report before the trophy presseentation.I think the reason NBC did a lot of cuts was more news was going on during the AFC CHampionship than the NFC.
True that this wasn't Montana's last game as a Niner, but he wasn't traded to the Chiefs until 1993. Montana played the second half of the 1992 regular season finale for his last appearance for San Francisco.
If memory serves, one of the most memorable Pat Summerall moments came after Roger Craig fumbled away the 49ers opportunity to win this game. I usually don't feel comfortable quoting from memory, but this time I think I have it exactly frozen in my mind. Going into commercial, imagine the audio heard from the 1:38 mark of this video playing as the bumper. A replay of Craig's fumble is shown, (slow motion if I recall) score superimposed with Summerall's declaration: "There will be no 3-peat!"
It's good to live in a YouTube world, allowing us to be our own program directors N ordering up classic moments like this from the vault. It makes it seem as if no time has passed. I was a college sophomore when this game was played & still under the delusion that these trivial matters were of some consequence to those not directly benefiting financially from their existence. Now, in my late 30s, fortunately I know better. Think of all the poor fools who go their whole life never figuring it out
Of course, the downside of living in YouTube era is its devastating effectiveness in setting the record straight. Someone could have the end of this game and the precise Pat Summerall moment I referenced. Maybe his exact quote was: "AND, there will be no 3-peat". You know? But all in all, I am a happy person, even knowing now what I didn't know then. Who hasn't been hooked into a cult (like the NFL, NBA, NCAA, NHL) and figured out later it was a classic pyramid scheme? Players/owners at the top
roger craig fumbling because of his own teammate. He holds the ball?niners run out the clock. But i don't know if young could have been ready to win the SB that year.Remember,HAD craig simply held on to it,it would have been young in the sb because montana was out.The niners were the best team that year, but when you help the other team with unforced turnovers...any given sunday.
Well @ least I know I'm not the only insomniac on YouTube. Your @ least the 5th 1 I've responded to in the last 3 months.
I think SF would have beaten Buffalo that year even with Young @ QB because he had already shown he could play & he was playing for the best team in football with a great running game, great WR's, a solid OL & a great D. Jeff Hostletter was no more qualified to lead his team in a SB then Steve Young @ this point.
Roger craig did NOT fumble because of his own teammate!! Eric Howard made a Great play....simple as that! How in the world do you call THAT an "Unforced Turnover"! Eric Howard put his helmet right on the ball, and "Forced" the fumble!! I don't know what clip you have seen. I don't know how you can say the 49ers had the best team that year when the Giants went into Candlestick and beat them in "The One Game That Counted"! I am not a Giants fan, but THEY had the best team that year!
Thank you for that excellent rebuttal. The fact remains Erik Howard made a great play and LT a great recovery. THEN, the Giants drove down about 35 yards to set Bahr up for the FG. So stick to skiing slope and let the grown folks talk about football
Give the ball to Rafman, not sure that how you spell his name, rarely fumbles, late in the game, get the first down. Clock continue to tick down.
Even if they won against the Giants, there would be no Joe M , in the finals against the Bills, though I think they still could have won with Steve Young
Also, one more thing.........the only reason the 49ers beat the Bengals in Super Bowl XXIII is because the late Lewis Billups couldn't hold onto a sure interception at the goalline in which Montana put it right in his chest....or should I say that Billups made 95% of a Great play!! He just dropped the ball, and if he hadn't, the 49ers don't score on the next play and tie it at 13-13 in the 4th Quarter! You lost to the Giants because of a turnover, and won SB XXIII because billups drops an INT!!
Also, one more thing.........the only reason the 49ers beat the Bengals in Super Bowl XXIII is because the late Lewis Billups couldn't hold onto a sure interception at the goalline in which Montana put it right in his chest
Not a NYG fan either, but great point! That dropped INT was actually in the endzone, however.
You're right. It was just inside the endzone. I do get sick of always hearing the stat that Joe Montana had 0 interceptions in 4 Super Bowl Games! That had nothing to do with his big game play........it had all to do with defenders who couldn't hold on to the ball!! In SB XIX, he should have had a pass intercepted by Glenn Blackwood that went right off his chest! Montana was an awesome QB, but he wasn't the best ever. If John Elway had his Defence, Elway would have won 4 more Super Bowls!!
Yeah, any debate about best ever QB's simply comes down to one's own opinion.I respect opinions, but when people start calling their views a "fact" I think its a little arrogant.Jim Plunkett didn't throw any INTs in the Super Bowl either.I respect what the 49ers achieved, but its annoying to hear at least some of their fans over the top remarks. They won 4 SB's in the 80's, but some of their playoff showings were anything but flawless.
Warner Brothers released in August the Giants' Ten Greatest Games. It is a DVD collection of 10 Giants' games in their original broadcast entirety. 1. Giants vs. 49ers 1986 2. Giants vs. Redskins 1986 3. Giants vs. Broncos Super Bowl XXI 4. Giants vs. Bears 1990 5. Giants vs. 49ers 1990 6. Giants vs. Bill Super Bowl XXV 7. Giants vs. Eagles 2000 8. Giants vs. Vikings 2000 9. Giants vs. Eagles 2006 10. Giants vs. Patriots Super Bowl XLII
Since, in this case, some of the Giants games were in the 80s and 90s, it was before the networks started keeping their logo on the screen all game long. In fact, these games don't even have a game clock, and the down-and-distance is only displayed on screen right before the play is snapped.
About the 2007 Title game, the dvd Road to SB 42 contained all the Giants playoff games that year, so I guess Warner Bros. didn't want to repeat with this collection.
Super Bowl VI Cowboys vs. Dolphins 1/16/72 The Hail Mary Game Cowboys vs. Vikings 12/28/75 Super Bowl XII Cowboys vs. Broncos 1/15/78 The Atlanta Comeback Cowboys vs. Falcons 1/4/81 1992 NFC Championship Game Cowboys vs. 49ers 1/17/93 Super Bowl XXVII Cowboys vs. Bills ? 1/31/93 1993 NFC Championship Game Cowboys vs. 49ERS 1/23/94 Super Bowl XXVIII Cowboys vs. Bills 1/30/94 1995 NFC Championship Game Cowboys vs. PACKERS 1/14/96 SuperBowl XXX Cowboys vs. Steelers 1/28/96
oooh, all caps. i must have gotten you REALLY mad. and i did not even insult you. is it because i inadvertently pointed out how pathetic and childish your conduct is? or is it because you are utterly insecure and cannot take even a hint of criticism? BTW, youtube is a public forum. so it IS my business. and you, friend, are pathetic. no insult to you mother ofcourse, i am sure she is a lovely lady.
"Any rebroadcast or retransmission without the express written consent of the NFL is prohibited" uh I don't see the words "it's ok to post this onm Youtube" written anywhere in that
You not realizing the 49ers had no running game and their offense was weaker that year. Young had not played that much that year. he would have been rusty. they would not have kept up with the Bills and they would not have been able to run and control the ball. They would have lost.
Niners were still the better team (better than the 1990 Giants, and the 1990 Bills), and the NFC was a powerhouse. Even if the 49ers were 10% weaker than the previous season, the AFC back then was a mere sacrificial lamb to the NFC.
Seriously, from the 80's to late 90's the NFC CC was the REAL Superbowl!
I am as big a 49ers fan as there is I am telling you they did not match up with Buffalo, They were not nearly as explosive, they had no running game so they would not have done what the giants did and controlled the ball for 40:00 minuets, I dont see their defense holding Buffalo down as good as it had played. Young instead of Montana would have made a diffrence only in that Young didnt play that much Montana was healthy, so he wouldntr have been as sharp as in other years no niners victory.
Buffalo was a remarkable fluke team (4-year-fluke), that 1990 Buffalo team wasn't as good as people think, Bills didn't reach that pinnacle of dominance (where they probably should have won a SB) until the following 1991 season.
There's no way in hell the Niners would have lost to the Bills, our Run D was still one of the best, and our pass rush made up for our aging backfield. Steve Young was literally ready to play QB back in 1988.
And although our o-line wasn't as strong, it was still good enough to block out the sort of vanilla D 3-4 Buffalo ran (that most of the AFC couldn't figure out.) 49ers defeated NFC teams during that season that were way better than the 1990 Bills (including the giants during that memorable 10-1 vs 10-1 MNF game).
I think your underating that Buffalo team they put up 51 on the Raiders who were not a slack team. Again I can explain to u enought the Giants won because of the style they played. they knew tha they could not keep up with Buffalo, so they ran the ball knowing Buffalo could be run up. The 49ers did not have a running game that year Roger Craig was not roger Craig that year he had a knee injury whixch limited him Young had not played as much as 88,and 89, now had Montnana played they would win.
That's what I'm essentially trying to say though, if Montana had played, we would have won. The matchup would have been equal to Superbowl XXIII, with Joe in the clutch.
I'm not taking anything away from Buffalo or the Giants, but the 49ers of that time went to a level no other team could within the big game (they could be average in any other post-season game, but not in the SB).
The experience of that 1990 49ers roster/staff would have dramatically outweighed every sort of existing frailty.
I disagree...I actually think their defense was JUST as physical as the Giants and the Dolphins put up 34 pts on Buffalo basically on the strength of Marino's arm. They would've won three straight. The Giants were just a conservative team...they did the fundamental things maybe better than any team in history.
The defenses might have both been physical, but Parcells loved to "shorten the game" by conducting long, time-consuming drives that kept Montana and Kelly on the bench, and the defenses on their heels.
Parcells and Belichik knew how to change their defensive game plans based on their opponents' strength. Bills = RAC yards (run after catch). Then the Giants deployed a defense meant to punish the Bills receivers and prevent RAC yards. That's why NY won.
@koreaga4 Idon't know, Maybe or maybe not becasue the 1990 Buffalo Bills were the best Bills team of all -time and perhaps the best nonSuperBowl winning team. That Bills team had a huge chucnk of the AFC Pro Bowl TEam,
i think the bills would have destroyed the 49ers. Just so everyone knows I am a
49ers fan so I am putting the bias way. The 49ers had no running game that year they would not have controleed the ball like the Giants.Young would have played instead of Montana he did not play as much that year so I think he would have been rusty in ths game. The Bills would have won easy.
I lost $5 on this game. I was so pissed off that night. I couldn't believe what happened. I just hated the Giants. Then came the Super Bowl which was even worse, lost another $5 on that. Then when the teacher found out me and this other kid were betting on games, I had a detention. Then came Super Bowl XLII and I lost $50 on that. I really hate the Giants.
I thought the teams were even. The diffrence between 1989 and 1990 was the way each regualr season game was played. the 89 regular season games was the 49ers tempo. But that 1990 MNF game maybee the best game i ever watched was the Giants tempo. they probably also has confidence given they always played the niners tough. if not for R.C.'s fumble the niners probably win. then on the other hand the Giants did kick 5 fg's. They did move the ball very well. Bottom line both teams were even.
Hey this was the most bitter loss I will ever experience bar none. Yes the NINERS should have won but the Giants made the plays in the 4th to win it thus they deserved it. But all you NYG fans know that our defense was just as good if not better as yours, in 2 games that year the Giants didn't score a TD.
perhaps, though if you remember Carthon dropped a floater in the endzone right out of his hands.
It would behoove you to remember too that Walsh and Siefert could never beat Parcells in the playoffs. the Giants won in 85, 86, and 90 with the same defense.
@acetrain81 Yes true. The year they won the SB? Sorry but the only rivalries that mattered at that time was between Parcells and Gibbs, and Parcells and Walsh. They faced each other every year, sometimes twice a year, and almost always in the post season.
I am not interested in who you think should have won the game. I am interested in who actually DID win the game. Luck had nothing to do with the Giants' victory. Luck is an explanation that would satisfy only an imbecile.
The music that is playing as Pat Sumerall discusses both teams is from the movie Dances With Wolves, though I don't know the name of it. The movie that won like 10 oscars debuted the same year, 1990.
The niners were the better team. They won during the regular season and they should've won that game. It was just that damn fumble. Giant were lucky in that game and the super bowl.
Really? That fumble that LT recovered was the result of a GREAT play by the Giants NT...either Dorsey or Howard. I can't remember which. But there was nothing lucky about it. Hell, the LUCK was how Marshall destroyed Montana and Mark Collins didn't recover that fumble. The 49ers shouldn't have been in that position in the first place. Don't go trying to rewrite history on what for my money is the greatest NFC Championship game ever. The Giants were the better team.
Don't blame Roger Craig...Blame that tub of lard Bubba Paris. I recall in 1988 Bubba Paris was so out of control with his weight Bill Walsh had a dietician evaluate Paris. They put him on a banana and milk diet. Nobody had ever gained weight on that diet...except Bubba Paris.
if the Niners would have played the Bills in the SB, the final score would have been something like 149-145 Niners win with last minute TD pass by Montana.
i might've taken this loss the hardest. i really thought were gonna 3-peat. i met roger craig down in south of market back in '97. class act, but he really blew it here.
That was one of the weirder games I've ever seen. I remember screaming 'fake' when the Giants lined up and Reasons took off with the ball - the Giants had pulled a similar one in Super Bowl XXI when the momentum called for it.
I think the Reasons play was an actual fake. The Super Bowl XXI incident, IIRC, was actually an audible from the punt formation. (Though if I was on the Bronco staff that day, I'd have been suspicious because NOBODY sends the backup QB in on a punt)
You remember that also? Roger Craig fumbled the dam ball & the Giants recoverd it & won 15-13.I'm still pissed off at that.If I ever see Roger Craig I'm kicking his ass.
Actually, "Pots and Pans" required a different introduction style. That theme (and the 1990 theme actually too) was designed for Summerall to set the table for the game. In the off-season after the 1989-90 season, the lead man's introduction was dropped. CBS was known for having themes that included integrating the open with the plots in the 1980's.
wow..memories. not only that, but its nice to see none of those goddam robots from FOX on the screen that serve absolutely no purpose to the production and telecast of the game other than to annoy the absolute shit out of you.
...Go Giants!... NY WINS AGAIN... Niners another fumble to end it..

Market42Fan 1 year ago
@Market42Fan I have the DVD, from what i remember, there were two interuptions in the 2ndQ. One came out of a buildbord and just before the two min warning. No action was missed as someone held up the game. As for half, CBS did a report the first segment before going back to SF. Also CBS did a report before the trophy presseentation.I think the reason NBC did a lot of cuts was more news was going on during the AFC CHampionship than the NFC.

True that this wasn't Montana's last game as a Niner, but he wasn't traded to the Chiefs until 1993. Montana played the second half of the 1992 regular season finale for his last appearance for San Francisco.

lmswentzeljr 2 years ago
If memory serves, one of the most memorable Pat Summerall moments came after Roger Craig fumbled away the 49ers opportunity to win this game. I usually don't feel comfortable quoting from memory, but this time I think I have it exactly frozen in my mind. Going into commercial, imagine the audio heard from the 1:38 mark of this video playing as the bumper. A replay of Craig's fumble is shown, (slow motion if I recall) score superimposed with Summerall's declaration: "There will be no 3-peat!"
GWhiz99 2 years ago
It's good to live in a YouTube world, allowing us to be our own program directors N ordering up classic moments like this from the vault. It makes it seem as if no time has passed. I was a college sophomore when this game was played & still under the delusion that these trivial matters were of some consequence to those not directly benefiting financially from their existence. Now, in my late 30s, fortunately I know better. Think of all the poor fools who go their whole life never figuring it out
GWhiz99 2 years ago
Of course, the downside of living in YouTube era is its devastating effectiveness in setting the record straight. Someone could have the end of this game and the precise Pat Summerall moment I referenced. Maybe his exact quote was: "AND, there will be no 3-peat". You know? But all in all, I am a happy person, even knowing now what I didn't know then. Who hasn't been hooked into a cult (like the NFL, NBA, NCAA, NHL) and figured out later it was a classic pyramid scheme? Players/owners at the top

Great game but this game represents the end of Joe Montana as a the dominant & premier QB in football.

roger craig fumbling because of his own teammate. He holds the ball?niners run out the clock. But i don't know if young could have been ready to win the SB that year.Remember,HAD craig simply held on to it,it would have been young in the sb because montana was out.The niners were the best team that year, but when you help the other team with unforced turnovers...any given sunday.
kubrickfan21 2 years ago
Well @ least I know I'm not the only insomniac on YouTube. Your @ least the 5th 1 I've responded to in the last 3 months.
I think SF would have beaten Buffalo that year even with Young @ QB because he had already shown he could play & he was playing for the best team in football with a great running game, great WR's, a solid OL & a great D. Jeff Hostletter was no more qualified to lead his team in a SB then Steve Young @ this point.
Oh by the way you have any more cliches for me?
FrsBigeasy 2 years ago
Roger craig did NOT fumble because of his own teammate!! Eric Howard made a Great play....simple as that! How in the world do you call THAT an "Unforced Turnover"! Eric Howard put his helmet right on the ball, and "Forced" the fumble!! I don't know what clip you have seen. I don't know how you can say the 49ers had the best team that year when the Giants went into Candlestick and beat them in "The One Game That Counted"! I am not a Giants fan, but THEY had the best team that year!
lishsc3 2 years ago
Not only Erik Howard, but LT's great reaction to catch that strip RIGHT OUT of mid-air.

Another dumbass, 49ers didn't allow any td's in both games. Roger Craig let the niners down.
AsianGiantsFan 2 years ago
Thank you for that excellent rebuttal. The fact remains Erik Howard made a great play and LT a great recovery. THEN, the Giants drove down about 35 yards to set Bahr up for the FG. So stick to skiing slope and let the grown folks talk about football

Give the ball to Rafman, not sure that how you spell his name, rarely fumbles, late in the game, get the first down. Clock continue to tick down.

You lost to the Giants because of a turnover, and won SB XXIII because billups drops an INT!!
lishsc3 2 years ago
Also, one more thing.........the only reason the 49ers beat the Bengals in Super Bowl XXIII is because the late Lewis Billups couldn't hold onto a sure interception at the goalline in which Montana put it right in his chest
Not a NYG fan either, but great point! That dropped INT was actually in the endzone, however.
333CLEAR 2 years ago
You're right. It was just inside the endzone. I do get sick of always hearing the stat that Joe Montana had 0 interceptions in 4 Super Bowl Games! That had nothing to do with his big game play........it had all to do with defenders who couldn't hold on to the ball!! In SB XIX, he should have had a pass intercepted by Glenn Blackwood that went right off his chest! Montana was an awesome QB, but he wasn't the best ever. If John Elway had his Defence, Elway would have won 4 more Super Bowls!!
lishsc3 2 years ago
Yeah, any debate about best ever QB's simply comes down to one's own opinion.I respect opinions, but when people start calling their views a "fact" I think its a little arrogant.Jim Plunkett didn't throw any INTs in the Super Bowl either.I respect what the 49ers achieved, but its annoying to hear at least some of their fans over the top remarks. They won 4 SB's in the 80's, but some of their playoff showings were anything but flawless.
333CLEAR 2 years ago
I'm a Niner fan and I have to agree with you, if Billups hold that ball, Bengals should of won that game. Niners were so lucky.

What are the Pros and Cons of the DVD's cause I want to buy the Dallas Cowboys DVD set.
Does it have a Stupid Logo on the screen during the games, like MLB they have their Logo on the screen during the Baseball Games DVD's.
BTW, how can the Giants DVD's not include the 2007 NFC Title game, that was a Classic.
gfscarface13 2 years ago
Since, in this case, some of the Giants games were in the 80s and 90s, it was before the networks started keeping their logo on the screen all game long. In fact, these games don't even have a game clock, and the down-and-distance is only displayed on screen right before the play is snapped.
About the 2007 Title game, the dvd Road to SB 42 contained all the Giants playoff games that year, so I guess Warner Bros. didn't want to repeat with this collection.
rkozik87 2 years ago

No I meant, a logo like example MLB DVD's have the MLB logo even though it was not on the screen when it was Broadcast on TV.

Special feautures?
anything else?
BTW I found it for $37 at DVD Planet

You not realizing the 49ers had no running game and their offense was weaker that year. Young had not played that much that year. he would have been rusty. they would not have kept up with the Bills and they would not have been able to run and control the ball. They would have lost.
lmswentzeljr 2 years ago
Remember Rroger Craig!
acetrain81 2 years ago
Niners were still the better team (better than the 1990 Giants, and the 1990 Bills), and the NFC was a powerhouse. Even if the 49ers were 10% weaker than the previous season, the AFC back then was a mere sacrificial lamb to the NFC.
Seriously, from the 80's to late 90's the NFC CC was the REAL Superbowl!
gillianseed 2 years ago
I am as big a 49ers fan as there is I am telling you they did not match up with Buffalo, They were not nearly as explosive, they had no running game so they would not have done what the giants did and controlled the ball for 40:00 minuets, I dont see their defense holding Buffalo down as good as it had played. Young instead of Montana would have made a diffrence only in that Young didnt play that much Montana was healthy, so he wouldntr have been as sharp as in other years no niners victory.
lmswentzeljr 2 years ago
Buffalo was a remarkable fluke team (4-year-fluke), that 1990 Buffalo team wasn't as good as people think, Bills didn't reach that pinnacle of dominance (where they probably should have won a SB) until the following 1991 season.
There's no way in hell the Niners would have lost to the Bills, our Run D was still one of the best, and our pass rush made up for our aging backfield. Steve Young was literally ready to play QB back in 1988.
gillianseed 2 years ago
Fluke! The Bills were one of the great teams of all time.
cicio428 2 years ago
And although our o-line wasn't as strong, it was still good enough to block out the sort of vanilla D 3-4 Buffalo ran (that most of the AFC couldn't figure out.) 49ers defeated NFC teams during that season that were way better than the 1990 Bills (including the giants during that memorable 10-1 vs 10-1 MNF game).
gillianseed 2 years ago
I think your underating that Buffalo team they put up 51 on the Raiders who were not a slack team. Again I can explain to u enought the Giants won because of the style they played. they knew tha they could not keep up with Buffalo, so they ran the ball knowing Buffalo could be run up. The 49ers did not have a running game that year Roger Craig was not roger Craig that year he had a knee injury whixch limited him Young had not played as much as 88,and 89, now had Montnana played they would win.
lmswentzeljr 2 years ago
That's what I'm essentially trying to say though, if Montana had played, we would have won. The matchup would have been equal to Superbowl XXIII, with Joe in the clutch.
I'm not taking anything away from Buffalo or the Giants, but the 49ers of that time went to a level no other team could within the big game (they could be average in any other post-season game, but not in the SB).
The experience of that 1990 49ers roster/staff would have dramatically outweighed every sort of existing frailty.
gillianseed 2 years ago
agreed.
rkozik87 2 years ago
If the 49ers were better than the Giants in 1990, they would have beaten them. The better team won that game.
carlinrulez666 2 years ago
I disagree...I actually think their defense was JUST as physical as the Giants and the Dolphins put up 34 pts on Buffalo basically on the strength of Marino's arm. They would've won three straight. The Giants were just a conservative team...they did the fundamental things maybe better than any team in history.
cbaldwinjr 2 years ago 2
The defenses might have both been physical, but Parcells loved to "shorten the game" by conducting long, time-consuming drives that kept Montana and Kelly on the bench, and the defenses on their heels.
Parcells and Belichik knew how to change their defensive game plans based on their opponents' strength. Bills = RAC yards (run after catch). Then the Giants deployed a defense meant to punish the Bills receivers and prevent RAC yards. That's why NY won.
rkozik87 2 years ago
no way if the giants didnt beat them the 49ers would have 3 peated for sure afc wasnt a match for the nfc back then
koreaga4 2 years ago 4
@koreaga4 Idon't know, Maybe or maybe not becasue the 1990 Buffalo Bills were the best Bills team of all -time and perhaps the best nonSuperBowl winning team. That Bills team had a huge chucnk of the AFC Pro Bowl TEam,
serge014 1 year ago
i think the bills would have destroyed the 49ers. Just so everyone knows I am a
49ers fan so I am putting the bias way. The 49ers had no running game that year they would not have controleed the ball like the Giants.Young would have played instead of Montana he did not play as much that year so I think he would have been rusty in ths game. The Bills would have won easy.

Bottom line both teams were even.
lmswentzeljr 2 years ago
Hey this was the most bitter loss I will ever experience bar none. Yes the NINERS should have won but the Giants made the plays in the 4th to win it thus they deserved it. But all you NYG fans know that our defense was just as good if not better as yours, in 2 games that year the Giants didn't score a TD.
e1870 2 years ago 2
perhaps, though if you remember Carthon dropped a floater in the endzone right out of his hands.
It would behoove you to remember too that Walsh and Siefert could never beat Parcells in the playoffs. the Giants won in 85, 86, and 90 with the same defense.

acetrain81 2 years ago
@acetrain81 Yes true. The year they won the SB? Sorry but the only rivalries that mattered at that time was between Parcells and Gibbs, and Parcells and Walsh. They faced each other every year, sometimes twice a year, and almost always in the post season.

Really? That fumble that LT recovered was the result of a GREAT play by the Giants NT...either Dorsey or Howard. I can't remember which. But there was nothing lucky about it. I think the Reasons play was an actual fake. The Super Bowl XXI incident, IIRC, was actually an audible from the punt formation. (Though if I was on the Bronco staff that day, I'd have been suspicious because NOBODY sends the backup QB in on a punt)

Good intro, but it would have been better, personally, if CBS used the "Pots and Pans" theme.
dbadefense1990 3 years ago
Actually, "Pots and Pans" required a different introduction style. That theme (and the 1990 theme actually too) was designed for Summerall to set the table for the game. In the off-season after the 1989-90 season, the lead man's introduction was dropped. CBS was known for having themes that included integrating the open with the plots in the 1980's.
