  • Is it bad that whenever i look at a prawn, I want lobster?

  • I heard about a program called Mari, do any major films use that? I thought District 9 used it but I guess not

  • I have been following this lady's works and she's amazing

  • witch is the best program for modeling in your opinion?..For characters?

  • @djstyfler4u A lot of it comes down to preference, but our students will typically use Maya or ZBrush for their projects .

  • @VancouverFilmSchool What is the best way to texture? It seems to me like there are no good texturing tutorials out there...

  • Sorry for the delay in responding. That’s a pretty big question that is difficult to answer in this this space.

The reason it’s difficult to find good tutorials online is because this is an in-depth topic that requires proper instruction. The best advice we could offer is learn how to paint and draw, learn how to look at things, and learn how to use the tools in the software. You can also send us a private message and we can provide you with more details. I hope that helps.

  • I find the excellent matchmoving job in this movie most impressive. Camera trackers have traveled a long way since ICARUS. Congratulations to this work.

  • Were any VFS students in the 3D part of the movie coming out 'Battle: L.A.?' The movie kind of looks like this District 9 (sort of) and there seems to be a LOT of 3D modeling and compositing...etc. I was just wondering.

  • @Member01289 Actually, yes there are some VFS grads who worked on Battle: Los Angeles.

  • They wore clothes?....;-)

  • why does her pitch change upwards at the end of some sentences as if she is asking a question?

  • @108Dax: A mannerism I know from countless American movies. As if many women concatenate all their sentences with commas, never arriving at a full stop. ;)

  • i just lost fate in my life . . . :(

  • @pecollinni why?

  • Sexy and smart girl made alien beast lol.

  • the #D girl she made was so beautiful! (2:46)

  • Good advice there. I remember looking at her demo reel a while back. It's quite an impressive modelling reel.

  • District 9. I'm kinda interested in the movie. Vancouver Film school is amazing, I hope I can go there...

  • 5 STARS..

    Great :)

I have 14 yrs please visit my channel, thank you guys ;)

  • texturing is no where near as important as lighting.

  • Not true at all. Lighting is important but a good texture artist can really lift the realism and believability of CGI work.

  • The aliens could have been textured a solid color, but as long as the lighting is correct and there are realistic shadows and hotspots it will look good. Without those realistic details, everything would look aweful

  • While lightning IS very important, that doesn't mean texture is Not.

I mean... Just take a look at your own hand. When I look at mine I see a lot of different colors, there's yellow, red, and even blue and green in there. That is nothing you can get out of high-quality lightning or billions of polygons.

And you're right about simple geometry looking flat. But Thats when you Really need texture to help you to get the look that you want. I mean.. Look at any video game thats out there.

  • I'm sorry but I really disagree there. Lighting alone cannot create realism in CGI especially if you were to texture a model a solid colour. Yes lights, shadows etc do add a lot to the details but when CGI is aiming for the kind of realism they had in this film then texturing is equally important. CGI that lacks detailed texture work can look really bad.

  • have you ever rendered out realistic 3d objects?

  • Yes I have.

  • good, then you know how much more complicated and tedious it is to create realistic lighting than it is to make bitmaps on photoshop

  • a properly done textured model is more than just image maps.. it include complicated shaders that enhance the model when working together with lights.. you can light the scene all you want.. but without proper shaders/texture your model will always be sub-par work.. and yea.. i am not saying lighting is not important.. juz saying that writing off texturing work like that is amateurish and ignorant..

  • .....Goodness who cares

  • That's a very simplistic view of texturing. Texture artists do equally complicated work. Painting textures is not easy. There's an art to it. Its quite sad that you are being so ignorant of a crucial part of CGI. There shouldn't even be a competition between these things! Its all part of the craft. If you take CGI work seriously you'd know how important each aspect of the process is, including texturing.

  • Isn't the whole point of the proffession to make EVERYTHING look real? You can't just skimp out on one thing an concentrate on another.

  • Well, it's more of a sleight-of-hand. You can never make EVERYTHING look real; there's never enough money or time. The skill is to know where everyone will be looking and concentrate on that. The rest you make real enough that people don't look at it too closely. If done properly, you can maintain the illusion at a fraction of the time and money it would have taken to do it all completely.

  • @popaddict yeah and what I noticed is that the world of games for example is lacking BADLY in the color map creation departament.I mean some games just look awful. The textures suck and they apply shaders and light them very bright to cover the crap materials. And sometimes lots of blur and bloom.

  • He reel makes me wanna slap my work out of 3d space :P

  • Im loving these!

  • VFS: Do you use Sony Vegas?

  • no almost all movie makers use more advanced programs costing arround $10,000- $50,000.

  • lol

  • Sexy and smart girl!

  • @spider853: Smart IS sexy.

  • philip: what the fuck?

  • awesome. im studying to be an animator. so exciting.
