When you consider the stuff that JoJo characters go through on a constant basis, I can't see the reason why Kakyoin should have died just by being punched into a wimpy little Water Tower.

One thing I really like about the JoJo anime, is it makes Hermit Purple actually look DANGEROUS. In the Manga, it's kinda wimpy looking, I think. They are really Thin and look like they can't do much of anything, But in the Anime, the vines are actually thick, and they really look like they can do some damage

Kakyoin got a hole blown right around in between his lungs just about. So add major blood loss with lung rupture, along with the physical shock of slamming hard into a water tower, and it spells death.

Heck, losing a limb was a major deal back then too. Now when someone loses an arm or something, it gets totally healed back to normal.
