If I did a similar version to this special Card Sharks, I would have the Little Ladiez play against each other, and similar to this episode, they would come out and introduce each other one by one until I am the last one to be introduced.
That intro reminded me of What's My Line where the announcer introduces the first panelist and then each panelist introduces the next one until finally the fourth panelist introduces the host.
It was fun to see Alex Trebek here considering that the opening of "Card Sharks" and the theme music were lifted from his short-lived "Double Dare." And Bill Cullen's "FREEZE" was kind of a sly reference to the days when contestants used to "freeze" their bids during his days as the original host of "The Price is Right" on NBC and ABC in New York City.
I'm just surprised GSN didn't truncate the intros somehow (you'd think they'd just show the emcee saying the next one's name, or speed up the tape a la Family Feud). A rare good move by the network.
It is just me or do you think Gene Rayburn, Allen Ludden, Bill Cullen, or even Wink Martindale would've been good hosts for Card Sharks? BTW, I love Card Sharks!!!
Wink Martindale referred to Jim Perry as "that gentleman from Canada". Although Jim hosted many game shows in the Great White North, Jim is actually from New Jersey.
This, and alot of other NBC game shows, was taped in Studio 3...the same studio that Jay Leno is taped today. Unfortunate, the studio will be torn down in the near future when NBC moves to Universal Studios.
How ironic that just over a month later, Wink Martindale AND Bill Cullen would be back on NBC daytime. The Winker would be doing Las Vegas Gambit and Uncle Bill doing Blockbusters.
@sylviabh8ule let's not forget, Cullen also did The Original Chain Reaction for NBC Daytime and Geoff Edwards was a sub-host on that version, too before he did The NEW Chain Reaction for USA Network in Canada and also, when Jim Perry and Bill Cullen returned to NBC, Perry would host $ale of the Century and Cullen would host Hot Potato and plus, Gene Rayburn also did The Match Game Hollywood Squares Hour and he hated working w/Jon Bauman.
When Bill Cullen said he was from Pittsburgh, I thought there was going to be loud applause in the crowd, as the previous Super Bowl saw his hometown Steelers win their 4th Lombardi statue.
Wink got Jim Perry confused with Alex Trebek. Alex is from Canada, but Jim was born in Camden, New Jersey, outside Philadelphia. Though Perry did host a Canadian game show called Definition.
They were the G-T Mic as I like to call it, in fact, they've used the G-T Mic on Different Shows:
Gene Rayburn on Match Game, Bill Cullen on The Joker's Wild, Allen Ludden on Tattletales (if Im not mistaken) and The Winker on Tic Tac Dough on CBS and early run 1st run syndication.
and when Jim came out as usual the Card Dealer brings him the MIC.
and also, Wink & Bill both worked in the same studio from 1984-1986 Wink on Tic Tac Dough & Cullen on The Joker's Wild
and also, Alex Trebek used the G-T MIC on Double Dare on CBS, Tom Kennedy used it on Whew! and The Nighttime Price is Right on syndication and Susan Stafford also used the G-T MIC on Wheel of Fortune, something that Vanna White never did, but I don't think that Vanna needed the G-T Mic or any other MIC and that's cool with me.
But on High Rollers, some of the Models used other MICS, but if anyone has any info on the Models using the G-T Mic on High Rollers please let me know, Thank You.
@megamanj2004X and also, Alex Trebek used it on Double Dare on CBS, Geoff Edwards on Treasure Hunt, Bob Eubanks on Trivia Trap, Jim Caldwell on Tic Tac Dough, Tom Kennedy on The Price is Right on syndication and Ricki Lake used it, too on Game Show Marathon, but I wonder has any female host or hostess has ever used the G-T MIC?
Betty White used it a couple of time when Gene Rayburn let her host Match Game for a question or 2 on a couple of episodes. I believe she used it for her game show Just Men.
GSN today has started showing week two of Card Sharks GS host tourament with Tom Kennedy, Jack Clark, Jim Lange, and Alex Trebek. Unfortunately, they were not introduced in this very sophisticated fashion. I wonder why?
On a side note, at 3:21, when Jim said "We refused to go along with the idea." might have been a reference to the 1980 actors' strike which was going on during taping.
Quick side note, I am a huge fan of the Scooby-Doo cartoon series and I remember reading that the actors strike was what delayed Scooby's 1980-81 Saturday Morning premiere until November 8th of 1980. Usually the networks Saturday Morning schedules premiered during the first or second week of September but during that season Scooby and most of the Saturday Morning shows did not debut until November because of the actors strike.
If Jim Perry hadn't been chosen to host Card Sharks, I think Wink Martindale would have been a good host for card Sharks. :)

Aces and deuces are the cards we seek
But sevens and eights leave us up the creek
On 'Card Sharks'!

Very observant. I grew up in Toronto, and it was not well known that J.P. was from New Jersey.
donavitum 2 years ago
At this time, he was hosting "Definition" on CTV as well. A likely reason the Winkster referred to him as the "gentleman from Canada."
Did Alex Trebek, indeed from Ontario, play in this "Card Sharks" event?

Alex Trebek did play in the event. As a matter of fact, I believe he won the tournament.

and also, here's another fact:
Card Sharks was on when Ted Turner launched SuperStation WTCG which later became SuperStation WTBS and also, WGN became a SuperStation as well.

Sort of a little What's My Line? action going on here, with the contestant music playing in the background.

the G-T mic was also used when Jack Barry hosted TJW. In the 1978-84 eps. that is.
And on some very rare instances of The New $25K Pyramid in the '80s, Dick Clark sometimes used the G-T mic as well.
