  • Steve Jobs was the Rocket man

  • Used to sneak in and play my brother's copy of this on his awesome stereo system, and he would always come in, yell and kick me out. Now that we're in our 50s and 60s, I think he has finally forgiven me, lol.

  • Mars ain't the kind of place to raise your kids... In fact its cold as hell...

  • my all time favorite Elton John song

  • They just don't make them like they used to.

  • (Apologies in advance if this has already been answered) Does anyone know how long this song took to record in the studio?

  • @suprtzar1 Produced by Gus Dudgeon. I'd imagine the entire process took a bit of time.

The song has many small arrangements...Anyway, they took their time with mixing and overdubs. Elton laid the voice tracks down rather quickly and with very little effort.

    ~hope this helps :)

  • Wonder if all the "outer space" sounds are made by a synth. Some of them sound like electric guitar...

  • @elinorvonzahm its made by a lapsteel!

  • this would be a good song for him to sing today being that its the end of the space shuttle program and all that does anybody agree

  • Bolton UK April 72....

We are a song with no clear end

    a bicycle built for two...

    M. S. Morrison

  • great song!! i hope it wont be a long long time!!!

  • I don't think the song is supposed to have a single meaning. I think Bernie was influenced primarily by the space missions that were taking place, but he then worked in other themes that were metaphorically similar.

  • Is it true that this song is about heroin addiction? It seems like it could be...

  • @g0db0dy lucy in the sky with diamonds

  • and im gonna be high as a kite by then

  • Elton, davey, dee and Nigel, what a conbination, the greatest

  • Classic Band, Elton , Davey, Dee and Nigel, The best combination, Dee's bass line is awesome

  • oh god, this will ALWAYS be a favorite song of mine till I take my last breath!

  • He may be a faggot, but he can write some AWESOME music!

  • @PaulieRomanov sorry, but i still find this disrespectful and you are making yourself ridiculous by calling him a ..........

  • @PaulieRomanov grow up, you're acting like a little kid. As you get a bit more mature, you'll learn to express yourself without making a complete ASS of yourself.

  • @bbigrocker bernie taupin wrote the lyrics.

  • @humbledrumah I actually knew that, as he did with most of Eltons lyrics, both of them are very talented

  • @PaulieRomanov

grow up. don't be so homophobic !!

  • @dcboakville hey man i adgree but chill man geezzz....homophobe is shariah law the very thing some one who yells homophobe would fight to protect from opinion and criticism becuse it would offend a small group of people

  • The Greatest Melody Writer Ever In Popular Music

  • This song reminds me of the fishing trips my grandfather would take my cousins and I on. Somehow this song would always play over the radio. RIP Harry S. Thornton!!!

  • I'M A ROCKET MAN!!!

  • He singin about his coke days

  • hes singing about hes coke days

  • @SH4R9Y 1972 was WAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY before his coke days.

  • Love is a drug and believe me ive had my drugs :-)

  • this song is a thumbs up no doubt and is one of the greatest songs of all time. Just an amazing masterpiece created by Elton John. Not many can compare to this song.

  • it's one of the best and most original songs of the 70s...compares with bowie's early work and, in some respects, is even more accomplished...the whole album is brilliant. music fans had some rare treats in 1971...hunky dory, honky chateau, led zep iv, roxy music II, sticky fingers etc (some of my dates might be a bit out, but you know what i mean)...i forgot to mention paul simon, family and joni mitchell's blue album...or john lennon's brilliant first album...

  • sorry i meant to hit thumbs up but i hit thumbs down sorry

    +2

  • @uclrichard love is a drug!

  • Just an incredible song! In my country they used to play this on TV when advertising the old US series "the greatest american hero". Those were the days ;)

  • One of the most skilled and influential people to ever touch a key; amazing.

  • E P I C

  • Brilliant.

  • Had to hear that twice. Brilliance right there.

  • Did the very same.

    Great song.

  • His best song.

  • this is a good version.

  • elton john gots a few good songs i like lol i just heard this song from family guy and i remember i heard this song befor

  • same here!!!!! i was blastin my pipe, & all the sudden stewie was sing this, & it was fucked up./. hha i never watch tv, so ya, amazed me easily

  • yeah i saw that the other day too lol

  • Love this songgg.I remember listening to it with my dad when I was little

  • its "burning out his fuse up there alone"

    for anyone who wondered

or maybe trying to figure out what

burning out the hills of avalon could mean

  • Actually on that note. Elton John actually respects a lot of those "rappers" he said

"I want to work with Pharrell {Williams}, Timbaland, Snoop {Dogg}, Kanye {West}, Eminem and just see what happens. It may be a disaster, it could be fantastic, but you don't know until you try."

  • this is as good as it gets :)

  • Don't make em like this anymore

  • Liked this one so much I did an acoustic version and posted as a response. Check it out. Sherrill

  • great song!

  • kleerhoney i think i have the song if you wanted

  • My faorite E. J. song ever. He is such an amazing artist. I'm only 16 and I look back at the music through the ages and this so called rap "music" is nothing but an excuse for noise. My Father once said that "Rap is for people who can't sing." and I for one, concure. I just wish I could find this on Mp3 Rocket...so sad. :'(

  • "Rap is for people who can't sing..." John Entwistle said that. He was kinda a dick, but it's rather true. I can respect Hip Hop, but Rap now-a-days is a popularity contest, no message, no real emotion.

  • I can agree with that. I grew up on hip hop and r&b from way back when it was starting. back then it was creative, now it's shit with no meaning. they're only out to get rich. I listen to a lot of music from my time and before these days.

  • same scenario for me man. rap is only a simple beat with talking. amazing what people like these days

  • September 1972, damals 16 Jahre alt und mit diesem Song auf Klassenfahrt in Lichtenfels, never forget!

  • I sure wish Elton and Bernie were still writing songs together.........they were genius together

  • they still are. his next album is scheduled to be released in 2010 or 2011

  • @Mygrassisblue01 I agree 100%. I wish people could learn to love beautiful music like this, not the crap of today.

Also, who thinks that the cover of the album is the best hair he's ever had?

    I sure do

  • @Mygrassisblue01 Elton and Bernie are still writing songs together, the new album The Union, with Leon Russell, is superb and rightly gets 5 stars in Rolling Stone

  • @Mygrassisblue01 they still are

  • this song is amazing...speechless

  • I think this song just might be better than life itself i love this song : )

  • First heard this song on my way to my graduation rehearsal.1972

  • im 13 and i like this better than most rap songs and i like frank sinatra more the most rap songs i dont like dirty music i just like good music

  • rap isnt even music

  • sinatra is the best im 14 and songs like these are classics i love just wonderful songs that have meanings

  • im 14 too and i love oldies and frank sinatra and deaN martin and beatles lol

  • im 14 too i luv these songs there classics. i luv them

  • While his 15 minute versions in concert are a joy to behold, it's so great to be reminded of this classic tighter version. Timeless.

  • I used to sing this along with him on my record player in my room over and over and over!

    Love it!

  • One of the best albums of the 70's, and a great song.

  • can'tbelieve that there aren't more views of this song!!! what the @#%%^%!!!! people? E. J. rocks!

  • it was a great single - in a year when his friend bolan was dominating the english charts and bowie was grabbing the critics by the bollocks by his 'ziggy' album - which was even better than 'honky chateau'...

both bowie and elton had recorded brilliant albums before 72...and neither had made a bean...this was a watershed in english music...

  • did you just read Wikipedia or something?

  • good
