I am a self-taught drummer and I will tell you this - there is a reason Lars Ulrich called Jon Theodore the best drummer in the world. Thomas Pridgen is a very fast and proficient gospel drummer but that's it. The Mars Volta turned to shit the moment Jon left the band. He was the true creative force that brought TMV to the main stage. I now follow his projects and have forgotten about the self-righteous songwriting drug-addicted duo of Omar and Cedric. I do miss Ikey though... :]

Awesome cover man, really like your feel. Jon Theodore was definitely my favorite drummer out of all the ones they had. Pridgen was definitely the best, but Theodore always felt like he was one with the music and had a sense of how to take the song to a different level.

I am going go ahead and COMPLETELY AGREE WITH YOU here. Theodore is a mega dood. Haven't really wanted to ever listen to TMV since the guy left. I used to think Cedric was the guy in charge or, you know, Omar. Turns out Theodore was the real pusher in that band.

That said, One Day As A Lion kind of proves that theorem, really. Zach DelaRocha hain't the greatest musician. But Theodore made him sound less like a pissed off college student.

In the states I use 13 inch Avedis Zildjian hi-hats and they are really fresh. I don't know if you have a low end set or a high end set. If you use a 22" bass drum go 13s. If you use a 14 inch floor tom go 14 or 16s.

IMO I hate Paiste* (yo Ziljdian hook a brother up). I have a around 5 reason why I do not think Paiste should ever be used. However I do have one reason/example why 1 of their hundreds of cymbals should be used.

Here's a discovery. Go listen to Led Zeppelin-'Achilles Last Stand' on Presence and a lot of Mars Volta's good ideas are all right there.

De-Loused is their only good album. The rest are all weird, bullshit, wannabe salsa infused prog rock that are completely unlistenable.

Omar's new record is way better than anything TMV have put out in the last few years which is kind of odd. I'm impressed by Zack Hill's ability to play with a more contemporary feel. This record has made me respect him much more because I could never stand Hella and the noise that they make.

I'm not convinced that TMV ripped off Led Zeppelin, if that's what you're trying to say. Sure, the similarities are most definitely there, that's no question, but look at who TMV lists as influences. Omar and Cedric have always played experimental music that has seemed to have evolved, musically, over time. I mean, I came from a punk background and now find myself playing experimental rock music not because I try to sound like that but because my style of playing seems to fit into that label.
