Good cars the old Allegros, ive always fancied getting one and keeping the body totally standard but tuning up the engine so it would be a wolf in sheeps clothin but sadly never got around to it. Allways wondered if the I could have put in a 1750 cc Maxi engine running twin webers off a MG Maestro R series engine as both seem to be same design so just swap over the carbs / cylinder head.
I've just bought one and it's brilliant fun. Not many cars are still going strong after 35 years. 40 to the gallon. No road tax. The Austin Allegro is the way forward!
I never understood why there's so much focus on the Allegro's alleged ugliness. Sure, it's not a major beauty, and from certain angles it's less than aesthetically pleasing (I understand that the original design concept was compromised quite a bit).
But you could say that about a lot of cars from the same era, and at least the Allegro has personality. It's far from the ugliest of them, and it's certainly not the blandest.
They may not be a 'perfect' car, but the Allegro has character and personality. If you want reliability and practicality, then it often comes with blandness and anonimity (Toyota Corolla anyone?)
Spoosh, hahaha! love that one about them breaking in half! biggest tale of old tosh ever! They weren't banned from the Mersey tunnel, christ! I can't believe people still think that's true!
i agree with spoosh66 i have had 3 maestro's in the past and they never let me down although until the early nineties the steel they made them out of was full of rust.
Always liked that car even tough the suspension made you sick and they banned them from the Mersey Tunnel cos they broke in half when you tried to tow them. Minor points. BL was the most underrated car company going. They were crippled by lack of investment, shoddy quality control and bonkers management and unions. They made the most interesting cars I've owned - and the Maestro was the best car I've ever had.

I have owned a 1.6L and driven a 2.0 MG.. they were bloody hideous..
The MG was a bit quick, but the L had a gearbox like stiring lumpy porridge.
Admit it!.. they were bloody awful!
I must admit I remember them with a smile on my face. (Still bloody awful cars though)
