That Sid and Marty Croft stuff was so nasty, cheesy and fake. I hated it when I was 10, and 40 years later, well, it still lacks that cool retro feel that so much of the 70's stuff had. You might even call it one of the 70's "skeletons in the closet"; the stuff people who put down the 70's are talking about.
I used to love all those Sid & Marty shows of that time, without understanding the more adult subtexts to them. Is anyone else creeped out at the thought of Charles Nelson Reilly kidnapping a teenage boy into his own alternate universe?
Ahh yes, back when Six Flags still flew ALL SIX FLAGS, representing the six flags that have flown over Texas (where Six Flags originated): Spain, France, Mexico, Texas Republic, USA, and Confederate. The Confederate flag is clearly visible at 0.04 in the intro (on the left). You NEVER see that anymore - except maybe a KKK rally or something.
man I was born in 68 and i remember watching this like a ritual, this and Land of the Lost and H R Puff and Stuff and now i think, I was only like, 3 or 4?? This was such a freak out at the time! Thanks for posting, brings back good memories when all life was about the next episode...sigh
Ahh...back in the days when kids show writers realsed that there would probably be just as many potheads watching as small children so they may as well cater for them (although I'm sure one or both of the Krofft brothers must have been into marleys special blend). It can be denied by the creators these days all they want but come on 'anyone who goes to lidsville really flips his lid?' Definite drugs ref. I LOVE ALL OF SID AND MARTY KROFFT SHOWS AND STILL DO!!!!!!!!!! I WOULD WATCH ALL OF THEM AND IF THEY WERE STILL ON THE AIR NOW, EVEN THOUGH I'M 50 YEARS OLD< I:D STILL WATCH ALL OF THEM!!!!!!!!!!
I had to go listen to Womanizer and you are absolutely right! The basic foundation of both songs are the same --- that is hilarious. Good ear Maddogslade...very good ear.
What drugs were Sid & Marty Krofft taking when they came up with this and HR Puff-n-Stuff, and Sigmund and the Sea Monsters, and can you get them over the counter in Canada?
I watched this when I was 6. Never cared much for the show, but the beggining was awesome. "Falling, falling, into the hat he fell...Down...Down..." Trippy.
I just discovered at wal-mart that this show along with others by sid and marty is now on a nice dvd collection disc. All for just a simple 10 bucks. I'm gonna get my copy soon.
I enjoyed marty and crofts shows, I'm 40 now, and they were lost to me for a long time.
I've been searching for marty and sid crofts shows forever ! thank goodness for internet, my search is over. 2 years ago i found hr puff n stuff, but it took me forver to find the villan magician in a top hat! I just found it today, i came across your youtube, thank you. I'm adding this vid to my vlog, and favorites.
@cashier870 Hey, sigman the seamonster was a pot production if ever there was one. They were lazy, sat around watching tv and played on the beach. Doctor shrinker was cocaine and lidsville was acid. They used real sugar in cereal back then too lol.
i'm 43 and i still know the songs i can't help to sing them still you got love sid and marty kroft i wish more parent had there children watch these then some of the new ones
wow...haven't seen this in 40 years! I remember the 1st half, but not the last...I must've changed channels midway through to watch the Bugs Bunny/Daffy Duck show on CBS.
I watched a bit of this show when it came on TVLand (I think?) a few years ago... I won't lie, most of the reason why I watched this is because I think Mark is hot -- the fact that he was fraternizing with giant foam hats just made it even better.
I remember this show vividly. I was 4 yrs. old and loked forward to every episode. I also loved Land of the Lost and all of the other Sid and Marty Krofft Shows. They were pioneers in childrens television.
Having to had suffered with these uninspired, poorly written, badly acted Sid and Marty Croft shows, I now understand why I use to try to fly on a broom when I was a child.
I was there the first run around with these LSD trip inspired shows. I loved the magic hat but the rest was just a messed up mind trip that lacked good writing and imagination., but I would love to have that Vroom Broom to get around on.
How did we ever...correction, how did most of YOU grow up undamaged with Saturday morning fare like this? The King Vitamin and Count Chocula was bad enough for us!
Be happy 6of6,,,,do you have any idea how hard it is when you're a kid to bug your parents to check out the Good Will, the Magic Shops, and the Salvation Army's thrift store trying to find THIS HAT? And I'm 49 :P
You mean anxious as in kind of freaked out and uncomfortable right? I agree, I never really enjoyed the Krofft shows. They kind of freaked me out. I think the kids who liked them also probably liked Wizard of Oz- which also freaks me out. There's just something really disturbing about these Krofft shows.
@ar4216 Hey ar4216. It didn't freak me out. The predicament this kid was in; trapped in a bizarre world with no way to get back home. The whole futility & fear of abandonment made me anxious. Must've been a latchkey kid thing.
Is your avatar a reference to The Prisoner? Now that's a show I loved. And I see you have a Haysi Fantayzee video favorited. Love that as well. That chick was so hot. Never enjoyed the Krofft shows. So not sure why I waste my time looking them up. LOL! Guess it's just to see if I still find them disturbing. And I do. It's like the Wizard of Oz. People paint that as some lovely kid's movie. For me that flick is second only to The Exorcist- those munchkins, monkeys with wings, the witch. Creepy.
@ar4216 It is indeed a Prisoner reference! She is crazy hot. I never realized it back then until I watched the videos again just recently. Yes, campy re-imaginings of originally creepy stories. The newest Oz movie is closer to the creepiness originally intended, I think. YouTube is fast becoming a cornucopia of tidbits from my youth!
I watched this back in the early 70's when it first came out.. The theme song is great! I have the complete series boxed dvd set. When I watch this it takes me right back to Saturday mornings when I was a kid.
The answer to the question of just WHY Sid & Marty never finished these great classic 1970s saturday morning kids shows is a simple one folks...When the budget for the show runs out of money the shows abruptly end and then eventually wind up on VCR's DVDs & YouTube! and I am glad it did because it brings back a lot of great memories.
Oh yeah, Another classic Sid & Marty Croft show without an ending was The Lost Saucer with Ruth Buzi & im Neighbors of Gomer Pyle fame, Well Gaaaaaaawly!
The star of this show "Besides Charles Nelson Reily" was Butch Patrick and his earlier claim to fame was of course as li'll Eddy Musnter of The Munsters. The ONLY bad part about thse classic Syd & Marty Croft shows was they had a begining but hardly ever an ending! Lidsville was one that never finished & we never knew if Mark ever got home, Other shows without an ending were Far Out Space Nuts,Land of the Lost & Doctor Shrinker. All GREAT70s shows but sadly no one ever knew if they got home.
little Eddie Munster I have lidsville on vhs. Every time i hear Britneys womanizer this theme song comes to mind. Theres one part that is similar. strange
I use to watch this as a child. Now, looking back at this intro I think I unstand why I never even went near any drugs much less do any. Just the propect of "tripping out" and seeing anything like this stuff I'm sure scared the hell out of me.
I think the intro is longer than the show, lol!!!!. Vaguely remember this show, but once in a while I get disturbing memories of it. Hope to see it again someday!
This and Land Of The Lost are two of the best shows of the 70's! Show really holds up today, well not really, but i still love it and watch it all the time, been introducing my little niece to Krofft and she loves it too!
It always trips me out when I hear how many of these stars hated the shows they were doing. WTF?!!! Most of them have become cultural "ICONS" because of these shows, and their names are known all over the world. Sure, I know many of them may have been underpaid, underappreciated, or even exploited. So what the heck else is new?!?!?! That's the story of my life, and I'm neither RICH or FAMOUS.
No worries. You didn't offend me Not sure what made you think that? I was simply was making a comment. You misunderstood what I was getting at. What I meant is It's the celebraties themselves that trip me out when they speak so negatively after the fact about the shows that made them famous. Not to say that their tales aren't true. It just trips me out that's all. Kind of like WOW, here I loved that show, and that's what was really going on behind the scenes??? Peace.
Lol channel 2 or 3 used to play it at some rediculous hour of the morning, being a kid I was up to watch it haha (I'm from New Zealand - we play all sorts of old programmes here lol)
I remember loving this show as a kid. I look at it now thinking, "Okay, exactly how many acid trips were Sid & Marty on when coming up with this one?" :)
This is classic childrens show. I used to watch this when i was 4 years old. In fact, I loved all of the Sid and Marty Krofft Shows From the 1970's. Thanks for posting this great memory.
OMG , I used to watch this as a kid.. I just could not remember the name. Tried to tell my hubby that there was a show that a kid fell into a giant hat.. Thank you for posting I knew I wasn't crazy
Watched this as a kid, it was good then, and no one can laugh like Charles Nelson Riiley. Pretty darn good theme song too, they don't make them like that anymore (unfortunately).
Hehehe...Butch Patrick from The Munsters (Eddie Munster) as Mark.

I use to watch this as a child. Now, looking back at this intro I think I unstand why I never even went near any drugs much less do any. Just the propect of "tripping out" and seeing anything like this stuff I'm sure scared the hell out of me.

Does anyone know who sang the intro song as well as most of the other intros for Kroft Productions?
jessejames1075 2 years ago
John Bahler sang this intro, as well as Love, American Style and the theme to Wonder Woman

It has future Match Game Panelist Charles Nelson Reilly as Hoo-Doo the villain of Lidsville. Great classic from the 70's.

Butch Patrick also hated Lidsville

yea i can imagine--he was too old for the part and no offense but he was a horrible actor

I'm sorry for offending you lxolxo7
nuwavevidspud 2 years ago
Peace.

I remember loving this show as a kid. I look at it now thinking, "Okay, exactly how many acid trips were Sid & Marty on when coming up with this one?" :)
taurnguard 2 years ago 13
@taurnguard Exactly. I submit Mark never fell into a magic hat , but merely dropped acid after the show with his friends.

Saturday mornings just not the same. :(

Watched this as a kid, it was good then, and no one can laugh like Charles Nelson Riiley. Pretty darn good theme song too, they don't make them like that anymore (unfortunately).
