The first 5 minutes of this show present the true arrival of the 'new wave' as the new chart mainstream - the charts soundtracked by what is not just a fantastic single but a bold(ish) piece of proto-synthpop by ELO, a true statement of intent from Paul Weller & The Jam - a band who would dominate the show for the next 5 years - and the curtain call of The Carpenters from the UK charts ('out with the old'). By no means a revolution, the UK singles regained a bite at this point in 77
@MrTillyayre if you mean Modern World by The Jam, it was changed from the album version, as it's a bit sweary - I'll leave it up to everyone to find out, I won't quote the line - but even now the album version definitely isn't suitable for airplay.
Wow; what great songs. I remember as a child hearing 'Calling Occupants' and thinking Karen Caprenter was really an alien so I always looking at her with a bit of fear and trepidation. Though when you think of it, her voice really was not of this world, though still not sure whether she was of this planet, (lol)
1977 i'd be 2yrs old back then, it was year that The Proffesionals 1st skidded on to the screen and The Incredible Hulk aired on US tv from this year, the year of the queens silver jubilee
1977 one of my favourite years for music. A great mix of Punk, Pop, Disco and Rock, and not a sign of Simon Cowell or even Schlock, Aching and Watersports on the horizon yet. Good Times!
Imagine someone as lovely and successful as Karen Carpenter dying of anorexia. So sorry the Barron Knights broke up after 5 decades of bringing uncynical happiness to millions.
would you believe that this Carpenters song has been put on cd in the 80's and sent into space for aliens to find and play (i take it they sent a cd player as well) as the martians might not have the money to go to Dixon's. if there is a player in the spacecraft i'll bet it works on the US voltage of 110 and the wee green man will probably use the UK version of 240 V. There must be some really silly bastards at NASA. i wonder who dremed it all up
Was 13 at the time, remember the Carpenters came to the UK to promote COOIPC and appeared on Swap Shop. Oh the hours I spent dialling 018118055 to try to speak to Karen. God its 32yrs and I still remember the number..sad or what?
I remember the honey coated lyrics of Karen Carpenter I was so very sad when I heard she starved herself to death. Her and her brother Richard were the real deal.
Oh please don't rub it in only joking. I love modern alternative music but the kids of the 60s, 70s and 80s got so much choice and music lovers today get fuck all pardon my language.
The Barron Knights was paroding Leo Sayer and The Floaters' songs in their comeback single and also The Carpenters' space-promo video of "Calling Occupants Of The Interplanetary Craft" was in this edition too and it saw Peter Powell's first TOTP appearence !!
do you have the totp show from Saturday 5th September? Because I have some of that show but not complete

It's nice when you get the top 20 and you've actually heard of them all. Some great singers in the line up here.

The Jam would do better later, I think. ELO had already done better, but "Turn to Stone" is as resonant and evocative a single as they ever made.

Amazing looking back to when music was interesting. Every group sounded different, not like today. Bring back the music of the 70's I say.
