Your 10 ton vs 100 ton analogy makes more sense if both objects were acted upon with equal force, say on a billiard table.
A 10 ton portion of a building collapsing onto a 100 ton has the constant force of gravity. As the building collapses, the 10 ton mass actually increases despite ejected debris.
Collapsing buildings are energy releases vs standing building dealing with static forces. The WTC experienced a jackhammer effect on the structure as it collapsed.
