They stopped making the ipod 160gb because it was to much memorie and it would keep crashing and so they just went to a lower level but its more reliable

I think they will keep the iPod classic for one more year then make the iPod Touch, "The iPod", when 128GB SSD is cheaper. Stores are already selling 128 GB SSD drives for $300.
iPod Touch with a harddrive -- With the shaking and swirving features of the iPod Touch, a harddrive would not be efficient because they get damaged easily, all this shaking of the iPod would damage their HDs.
Also harddrives use much more battery than flash memory, so that's another thing to consider with the Touch already using as much battery as it does.
Not sure if those have been said already, don't wanna look through all these comments.
the classic is the same as the old nano except it's smaller and less gb, so they should update that too if they were to do the classic as the classic doesn't have the accelerometer as well!
i agree i have a 80g because i watch family guy epidods and if the drop it they will not have any custmers and they will lose the battle with the psp's the nanos are slin light and long the classic are wallet size for me i do alot of running around so u need the classic
i agree that its stupid that they only have 32gb. i personally like the 32gb version because i know i would never use more memory than that. i know a lot of people who have bought ipod classics and use ALL of the memory on it.
well, watching the Let's rock vid, Steve Jobs was really cold about the Ipod Classic... He did not spend much time talking about it, just jumped to the next topic, as if it was a broken toy...
besides...the nano 16gb costs 199, and the classic 120gb costs 250...are the "cool" features of the nano really necessary for music lovers..? I only store music in my ipods.
a reason for not having an ipod touch with a hard drive:MONEY. Would you buy another device if you already had 200gb with wifi, so you could access the itunes store anywhere? that's why the touches will have minimum increases in storage capacity in future generations, i guess a 64gb would be the next increase...and we will fall for that, three years later an 80gb, we will fall for it too... then a 96 gb...and so on
One of the other reasons I haven't seen mentioned here is the battery implications. Apple only use flash drives with their smaller/more advanced devices because their batteries are already under alot of strain. Add in a hard drive and the battery life would be atrocious.
Imo, a hard drive and a 3.5" touch screen maybe some wi-fi and bluetooth.... and the ipod classic's battery life would be around 6-8 hours of music.
iPhone 8GB are 199$ WITH SUBSCRIPTION PLAN OF 2 YEARS (around 40 to 50 USD+ month cost)
In countries where iPhone is ALSO sold untied, unsubsidized, un-SIM-Locked (France , Belgium for ex) iPhone's 8GB REAL cost is between 735.5 USD (Belgium) and 846.75 USD (France where the unSIMLocking ALONE costs 100€=>139.04 USD)
So don't even start to compare the iPhone VISIBLE price to the iPod nano/touch REAL Price (Doesn't mean I don't see the value of the iPhone3G+plan : I got one myself)
at apple current price for 8GB prices (in USD) : 8GB nano : 149 16GB nano : 199 + 8GB = 50 => (128 - 8) / 8 * 50 + 149 = 899 Let say 10% rebate on volume price of Flash Ram => 824 or even 50% (let's be generous) = >525 Are those decent prices for middle entry models? Not even counting of the battery let's says Flash Ram represent a third of the depth of the nano (in mm): 6.2 / 3 * (128 / 8)=33.1 mm is that a reasonable thickness for a PMP?
"+no one bought it [..] nobody has 160gb of music."
Again, does that make me "nobody"???
Info, just in case you missed those 2 :
1-UMS drive (can't call It a dongle lol)
2-Video playback on screen (for good eyes) or trough video cable: Dock+Remote=>Mini transportable AppleTV anyone?
Sorry dude but at nearly 500MB the hour of film (TV series), I can add 10 seasons*22 episodes +podcasts and fill the rest with my 60GB Music library (Thanks to my parents : Lots of Vinyls+15y of my own CD).
i think they should re amp the classic like the nano...personally i would like them to make the screen a bit bigger and have the screen touch for scrolling and vid playback like some cells have ...the ones that have buttons and touch screen
If you are going to make a device that does more than a simple Mp3 player...shouldn't it have more storage space than a simple Mp3 player? Sorry..Not impressed with how Apple thinks, does business, or markets their product.
"Not impressed with how Apple thinks, does business, or markets their product."
I'm sure Sandisk, Archos, Toshiba, Philips, Microsoft and SONY (Walkman inventor anyone?) would love to share your point of view and your ideas to stop being left aside of the "MP3" players Big marketshare...
Lol "not impressed", dude are you stuck in 2001 when Apple anounced It first iPod?
Apple's success with the Ipod is contributed by timing, its interface, and the fact that apple allowed retailers to sell it. If Apple had marketed their Ipods like they do their computers....only a hand full of people would own Ipods. Apple knowing what made the Ipod successful yet will not do the same for their cmoputers...well...thats just stupid business. Set OSX free, sell Macs in Walmarts, and let 3rd party companies make peripherials for it and maybe..it will get a better market share.
Apple isn't in the sub 1K$ computers sold in Walmart and so on, Apple does force Its reseller to hire Competent seller even before agreeing to think about allowing them to sell Apple Products.
Flash News: Apple still makes more than Half of Its benefits and profit from Hardware, not from Software nor services.
Apple with It's marketshare still does near half of what MS do in terms of Benefists, so no Marketshare Bullshit thanks.
Wait a cotton picking minute. Are you implying that if a computer is sold at walmart it has to be sold under $1000 or its gotta be cheap? Then why the helll are Ipods (some of the most expensive Mp3 players) being sold in Walmarts? The only statement you got correct is that Apple does "half". Half asss job of marketing their computer products. And if OSx is so freaking simple and reliable, why the helll does it need so called "experts" to sell them? OH Please.
I like your videos..but that does not mean I have to agree with you. I just don't think the Iphone / Itouch / or the Ipod is all that as people make it out to be. with the exception of browsing the web...I can do everything on my flip phone that I need to do. Anything more...I break out my EEE PC.
If only you were true, blackberry have the marketshare that Nokia actually enjoy and the iPhone wouldn't have grabbed such marketshare in Smartphones, neither have released a second Gen iPhone (iPhone 3G) or iPod touch for that matter.
Seriously I wonder how many wrong assertion you can fit in a single sentence but you hitted 2 points on your first one...
First IPod Classic (6th Generation) came in 80GB "Thin" and 160GB "Fat" (I've got myself the 160GB :P)
The "thin" and "fat" thingy was only due to the fact that those 1.8" HDD were single and dual platter HDD (in case you don't know what does that means, just pass by Wikipedia in Hard Drive page)
Apple decided to stop the "Biggest HDD Music Player" race and choose the latest "Thin" 1.8" HDD avalaible : the 120GB single platter even if a "Fat" one (dual platter) is avalaible in 240GB capacity
There are BIG differences between iPod touch/iPhone and old ways iPods
The OS they are running (1) and the way they do "offer/appear" their mass storage (2) when connected to a computer
1 ) First the OS, well if you do know the products it's obvious, enough said
2 ) Second the way the iPod makes their storage capacity avalaible when connected to a computer , If you ever used the pre Touch/iPhone iPods on Mac and PC you well know that you need It to be formated for PC to work on Both.
The classic iPods mount on Host computer as mass storage (USB/Firewire Hard/flash drives) and then are managed by iTunes
On the other hand iPod Touch and iPhone do not mount on Host computer as direct connected mass storage, so no more "Formated for Mac or PC" problem.
How does It works?
iTunes is still the manager that's a given but for to be sincere I can only guess Apple used the USB connection as a network link with the iPod (Ethernet over USB is avalible for while but not very used)
Apple is very protective of Its new iPhone OS platform and the Filesystems used on iPhoneOS as The one used on AppleTV is prone to Data corruption when connected to/on a regular PPC Mac running OSX or on a Windows machine.
So Anti jailbreaking and Data corruption safeguard are the best explainations (even if in the first case Apple can't do more than limit the spreading of jailbreaking)
So an iPod Classic with Touch interface and 1.8" HDD isn't impossible, but will change what It is.
Hmmm... The Classic's days are numbered. I'd say that in the next year or two, flash memory at the Classic's capacities will be cheap. Or at least a HDD based Classic at any rate. Oh, disk access is pretty miserable on the 'Touch without a HDD's help. No HDD's in a 'touch ever, because performance goes down the tubes.
hey nice video! but i think it has to have the wheel in order to be "classic" having the touch pad wouldn't make it classic anymore. but i like the new classics, 120gb is still enough. but i think in the future, there will be a "mobile me" like thing, where users can store music onto the cloud and play their songs using that. so just like itunes anywhere. but that's my prediction
ipod clasic should stay, but I think it would be good if they released a new desighn this year or maybe they should just end ipod clasic creat a new ipod with a hard drive but in the future solid state hard drives are going be cheaper and going to replace hard drives in computers.
Seriously, Apple dropped the Fat iPod Classic because 120 should be enough for a lot of people and 240 GB is too much and probably sucks more batery life (the avalaible 2 platter [120GB per platter] 1.8" that could have been used for the iPod Classic "fat")
as you said the touch and nano are the most popular ipods and not everyone need 160gb in there pocket. the classics have become less popular but as you said are still important. The 160 was dropped because it had a thicker rear casing and they said the 120gb hard would fit in the same case as the 80gb. There is a post on macrumours aying apple reps have said current ipod classic owners will get a software update for genius playlists.
The iPod touch with a HD would cause some problems because of the heat from the HD could cause the screen to malfunction but it would be possible with some sort of heat shield and if someone says the screen wont malfunction because it is hardened glass but it is still a LCD underneath. Personally I like the iPod Classic the way it is it feels real sturdy and I like the touch wheel but I have an iPod Touch and also think that is awesome.
Who really cares? You know whats really stupid? Apple is so stupid because if they can make a device like the classic Ipod with even a 30 gig HD, why the hell can't they put a 30 to 60 gig Iphone or Itouch and still charge only 40 to 50 bucks more? They can, but they will not...because they are greedy focking fockers...who want to keep selling Ipod classics..instead of just moving on to just selling Itouch with a bigger drive.
lol.. nothing you said makes sense.. the touch uses FLASH MEMORY, and the classic uses a HARD DRIVE!!! Therefor they can just "put a 30 to 60 gig Iphone or Itouch and still charge only 40 to 50 bucks more"... Flash memory becomes very expensive, at higher capacities....
One thing haveing a Hd in a phone is plane stupidity because it takes a few secounds to load. anouther thing HD's break far more then flash memory and also making 30 gig Hd compared to a 120 gig is neally the same price. Also the iphone already is heavy enough
The iPod Classic uses a hard drive (basically a smaller version of what is in your PC) whereas the iTouch and iPhone use solid state disks.
To put a hard drive into an iTouch as Adrian suggests would ruin battery life and would cause display problems because heat and touch sensitive LCDs don't mix.
Solid State disks are much more expensive than hard disks. Maybe in 2-3 years time the price of SSDs will be reduced enough.
If having a non-flash HD is bad for battery life, how do you explain that the Ipod can continuosly play for 8hours. I dont' think I can talk on a Cell Phone (iphone) continuosly for 8hrs. And if Touch Screen and heat do not mix, how the heck does a Tablet PC and PDAs work? Please...don't make up excuses.
Some I/O activities on Flash Mass storage are More energy consumming thant on HDD Mass storage, some are less consuming, It all depends what kind of I/O is predominant
Cellphone talking, involves also Wireless connection=> Power consumption in + playing/recording/tranmitting/transcoding sound
TabletPC and PDA = How thick are they? oh yes a lot more because they need shielding between sensitive part
Dude Start using the thing between your ears It would clean the board...

The iPod touch with a HD would cause some problems because of the heat from the HD could cause the screen to malfunction but it would be possible with some sort of heat shield and if someone says the screen wont malfunction because it is hardened glass but it is still a LCD underneath. Personally I like the iPod Classic the way it is it feels real sturdy and I like the touch wheel but I have an iPod Touch and also think that is awesome.

well my touch alone gets a little warm even though its all solid state, an hdd would fuck it up so bad

I find it ridiculous that an ipod can hold mor than the air

Nice idea but think about the things that are making this iPod a "Classic".....I think it wouldnt be classic without the wheel.

I think that they stopped with the 160 GB because no one was buying it, to big, it was the least popular iPod.

Do you just search for apple videos and TRY to talk crap about people and their videos?

lol.. nothing you said makes sense.. the touch uses FLASH MEMORY, and the classic uses a HARD DRIVE!!!

You are full of shit aren't you.
