I going to buy a 2nd hand EF 50mm f/1.4. Where should I look at when I buy a 2nd hand one? I don't wanna come home and discover that some things are not working proper.
Do you have tips what to look at when buying a 2nd hand lens?
First video I've seen of yours man, and wow, I can't tell you how refreshing it was. There's production value, you know how to set up a shot, and most importantly you are easy to listen to. Trimmed the fat, honest, and to the point. Thank you, keep up the good work!
Im using a canon rebel 450d or Rebel XSI, ive really been interested in this lens... Is it worth buying even tho my camera isnt full frame? Please get back to me your advice and opinions are awesome!
@supersexy0069 If you use low light, use the 50mm 1.8. But for everyday walk around lens, I would go with a zoom lens in the range of 18-135 (Like the kit lens that comes with say, a 60D.) Or similar, but keep in mind it's not a very fast lens.
i already have the sigma 17-50 f2.8. Do you think i should still get a faster 50, i.e. the 1.8 or should i get the 85m 1.8 for portraits? My only concern with the 85m is the 1.6 crop may make it too long in smaller rooms?? Thanks for the videos!
I'm currently looking for a lens that performs at the level of the 50mm f 1.8 II, but still has the ability to zoom. I'm not looking for any telephoto zoom levels, but a nice amount of zoom would be nice.
@supersexy0069 depends on what your using.. i have both, i use my 50mm f1.8 for my portraits and shows for my school.. and 18-55 mostly for landscapes, whenever i need the 18mm.
@supersexy0069 Better, but not by that much until you get into really low light. It lets in over 10x the amount of light than the F5.6 18-55. It does suffer a bit from soft focus on the corners. Other than that, they're pretty comparable.
You'll have the standard lens anyways, but the reason you want a 50mm 1.8 is for low-light, "normal" pictures. 50mm is about the focal length where the field of view ("zoom") is almost the same as your eye. So you want the 18-55 for wide-angle and flexibility in well-lit situations, but the 50mm 1.8 will come in handy when photographing subjects in low-light, and you're not concerned about fitting a lot in the frame.
This video is old, but yet still very informative! DAMN a film school... I'm learnin everything I need to know thru youtube!!! LOLOL Thanks 4 posting! -B
i was planning on getting a canon 600d/t3i which comes with EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS lens. should i just buy the body alone and then get my hands on a 50mm 1.8?
@jmachete I'm sure it's just part of a "look". A fashion style. Makes him look professional - and he IS a professional. I doubt he's a social-impaired nerd in the correct sense of the word.
You started of so good, I actually thought this would be a very vivid cinematic like tutorial. However, after you started talking and talking and talking ... I was disappointed.
Great vid, I"ve got the canon rebel 2ti, just getting into photography. I"d like to see a series of instructional vids SHOWING when and what are the best uses for various lense selections.
@justayaforlife the 55-250mm is a zoom lens. the 50mm is a fixed lens. the 50mm is great for portraits and filming at night (with the 1.4 aperture, you won't get grainy blacks. i have it. it's perfect). the 55-250mm would be a good multi-purpose lens: such as macro (at 250mm) or telephoto use at the zoo, eiffel tower, stuff like that. long range.
when you pay 90 pounds for a lens and it has a very good image quality why do you really care about the build quality ? i have the nikon 50mm f1.8 and the quality is amazing ... you get much more than you pay for... so i think what should matter is the quality of the images produced not the build quality
@poisonblack83 Because you want the lens to last. Poor build quality will not stand up over the long haul especially if you are using the manual focus often.
@bcutts55 yea i know but when you pay more than triple the price for one lens.. what i mean is that the 1.8 one is only 90 pounds the other ones will be b 4-5 times the price, i think its wiser to buy another 85mm f1.8 than much much more for one f stop :)
Very nice picture but I really wish someone would have more techinical information like lens construction, why one is better than the other, coatings and that kinda stuff.
@supersexy0069 i got the 50mm recently.. well i observe its has better "bokeh" which makes the subject more in focus.. and its better in low light conditions compared to the kit lens especially when the only option is to handhold it
This is a really great video. It is over a year old but it helped me learn a bit. I am buying my first DSLR(Gonna go with T3i, even though I care more for video, cause I don't have money to spend on the GH2, and this will be fine) and I'll just get the f/1.8 because I don't know how serious I am about this, but I know that I'll want to do low light stuff, and f/3.4 will just not do(right? lol just assuming here) And yeah it's only $130. (It is $30 more than everyone says but it's a newer one)
@Klicket01 mind telling me which lenses ur gonna use and stuff? I'm also interested in the T3i for portraits and stuff with this lens. If ever you're gonna buy the lens in this video, send me a message. Thanks!
My 1.8 fell into two parts also, after someone wanted to be helpful and move my slingpack.. but I managed to get it back together after a you tube video on how its guts fit together...
hey if anyone is looking to but the canon 50mm 1.8 lens for cheap im selling mine on ebay jus search mzawesome and the lens will put up low price to and its brand new!!

@DavidHeatonPhoto Yes, in so many ways yes. I have a 16-35 f/2.8 24-70 f/2.8 50mm f/1.8 and a 85mm f/1.8. I love my 24-70 its a great walk around lens but the focus and image quality on a 50mm is just amazing, also when you want a super low depth of field you can't beat a f1.4.
