Very weird movie. Weird enough to watch til the end though I didn't particularly like it. The main character was furthermore uninteresting. I'd say the movie is a failure.
@suddenlyitsobvious if you say failure you obvious didnt either see the whole thing or you just couldnt find the morl of the story because it is obvious just apply logic and reason.
Miss Havisham is as you call "strange" because her so called husband did not show up to her marriage, so she stopped all the clocks at the same time when she realised the husband did not arrive during her wedding. She adopted Estella to use her as a tool of revenge. Estella is meant to "break the hearts of men". Miss Havisham only wants revenge on all men by using Estella, this is why she is acting "strange".
ok this is a really twisted analysis of the book or the movie.. but.. does miss havisham have a bit of a cougar-crush on pip? There are undertones of her becoming more and more fond of him. Yes, she ends up feeling guilty because she realizes what a decent person he's turned into.. but there seems to me to be something more.
That and may i just say that when he exchanged biddy for estella, he traded down. Biddy's a little doll. Estella wound up a bit plain, eh?
@FlyTheObserver I think Miss Havisham just reminisces of the time when her exfiancee loved her. I don't think it has a direct love connection to Pip in that way.
Estella was indeed so much more beautiful when young. Also I do dislike Miss Havisham forcing Estella on Pip in that way; it really strikes a nerve in me to the point of annoyance. Lastly did Ms Joe truly speak and ask for forgiveness as per the book?
Can someone tell me what video comes after this one? I tried to watch 2 1/7 but it doesnt seem to be the one... And it's with chinese subtitles!!! Thanks for your help xx
That is just because she wants to avenge for what was done to her. By making Pip love Estella madly and then breaking his heart, the way she was heart broken and was deserted on the very evening of her marriage. She enjoys it.
if the often repeated words had been hate instead of love despair revenge dire death it could not have sounded from her lips more like a curse! OH SIMPLY EVERGREEN!
Yeah, I know that now. I was reading the book for school, and I thought I'd watch the movie at the same time. They leave out stuff in the movie, of course, so Mrs. Joe died when I wasn't expecting it :)
He is told that Mrs. Joe was dead when Biddy gives him the letter about Joe going to visit Pip. And you're right about the Orlic thing. It almost seemed like Orlic didn't remember Pip. And earlier in the movie, Joe wasn't suppose to fire Orlic because when Mrs. Joe is in her bad condition, Orlic is the one that she wanted to see.
this is truly a moment Miss Havisham has been waiting for, that she might unleash the evil she has been meaning to do. To bear the evil fruits of the seed she had planted in poor Pip years ago. Notice the repeition and the hypnotic voice she uses on Pip during her attempt at auto-suggestion.
mr dickens has written a lot after this as i believe ..is not finishd here, i cant remember adjectly because i have read that book ages ago..i still love this book rather than this movie. .. thnx anyway..
Gotta be one of the weirdest things I have ever seen... Why is Miss Havisham pushing Estella on Pip every chance she gets? "Love her...Love her!!" Yeesh, relax already.
@stinkeepumpkin, That is just because she wants to avenge for what was done to her. By making Pip love Estella madly and then breaking his heart, the way she was heart broken and was deserted on the very evening of her marriage. She enjoys it.
@stinkeepumpkin In the book Great Expectations Ms. Havisham is trying to get revenge on the male Sex. Compeyson was the man who stood her up BTW. She uses Estella to manipulate Pip. She may seem kind to Pip but she is only getting revenge for Compeyson. The quote "Love her, love her, love her" is Ms. Havisham manipulating Pip.
@stinkeepumpkin Haha, I think it's because Havisham wants to enjoy the "show" she's been setting up since their childhood. She has raised Estella to break the hearts of men who love her; seeing Estella do this suffices the hole in her own heart after having been rejected and used by men she fell in with in her past, so Pip is but a pawn in her play. It's why she asked for a boy in the first place---to be something "of practice" for Estella. It's a sick, psychological pleasure to Havisham.
@stinkeepumpkin i think miss Havisham wants Pip to feel hurt - she was betrayed by many men, and she's using Estella to make other men feel pain, and thus she wants Pip to feel that pain.
dear god this is such a scary story..

Justine Wadell is a gifted actress - I loved her in Wives and Daughters.
Miss Havisham is truly messed up - her words of urging make me think of her as a female Emperor Palpitine the way she likes to pull strings
