If you break it down by racial category, Texas rocks the house with education. Whites, blacks, and Hispanics do better than their counterparts nearly all over the country. The sad truth is blacks and Hispanics do somewhat worse on testing etc., and there are a heck of a lot of them in Texas to bring down statewide averages. Overall though, Texas is doing something very right with business growth and education, I know because I figure these things out for a living.

@bw01a Statistics tell a different story. Ah, the old blame it on the brown people. TX has a HUGE budget problem and they are laying off teachers. Gov. Perry has already taken billions from the feds because he can't balance his budget. I have looked at the stats, lots of minimum wage jobs whoopie! They have a huge amount of folks without health insurance, a poverty problem and rank close to last in education. TX is hardly doing anything right. I lived there for 5 yeas I know.

Recession-proof is when my brother-in-law received a $3.2million bail-out from his and my father, or him, my sister, and 3 kids were going to lose everything. The Dad's came up with the cash in 3 days. The kids got to stay in private school (tuition 1 kid costs more than most colleges'), keep their 5200sf home with pool & 1800sf servant's quarters (house for 2maids & gardener). Times are tough. They were only able to take 6 trips / vacations last year. North Texans are incorrigible sociopaths.
