nccco operator here, water weighs 62.5 lbs per cubic foot so proper calculation for this lift is first know the weight of your load.. the weight of the bus plus its equal volume of water. ensure the radius is within chart for the load to be lifted . don"t exceed radius for that load . now the water will provide buoyancy for the lift for a while and actually assist in the lift. the crane was likely out of level or undersized for this lift. best to assume load is solid steel 480lbs ft3

@Nudelsalatbomber I don't know to tell the truth but it seems like the U.S. and Canada have a much less strict safety regulations than the European counterpart to OSHA.
@Ih8stupidhumans, well, i just wanted to make sure, that if i take a swing on america, that i´m correct.
so, here comes the swing - america is known for all their crap! the only fucking thing america really cares about, is to have the best military equipment in the world. and the only reason for that is, because america pissed off the whole world in the first place, and is now scared to get his ass whooped! america should put its money in health care and education instead of ammo and crap!
@Nudelsalatbomber You're talking about the American government right? As an American myself the most important thing to me is Liberty and Freedom for All. While the US uses more than any country it has the accomplishments to warrant it.
liberty and freedom does not really exist in america! once an american told me, the the usa is a country for winners and people who can fight to move forward. if you´re poor and not capable to fight, you better don´t live in the us.
Why would you try to lift something as heavy like that? surely the driver knew that setting up his crane side on would really leave him with much less lifting ability...
lol did u guys ever here about the accident in Ireland when a person fell into water in his car and they got a crane and it fell in so they got another crane and it fell in then they got another crane but that one ot em out
A very poor recovery operation. Using one crane like this was asking for trouble. And there should have been nobody in boats by the bridge when the bus was being lifted.
i droped a pallet of corrugated cases at work once fom a counter balence fork truck! not as impressive as that. As the bus left the containment of the river its weight increased exponentially i reckons! thus making the drivers arse loosen lol hope hes ok
Question, if there was water in the bus, which created alot of extra weight, why didnt they go smash the all the windows out before pulling the bus out? Then the bus would have contained alot less water.
Doh. I'm no engineer but i had a hunch some idiots figured an empty bus dont weigh that much but then everyone realizes oh yeah we forgot to calculate the weight of the water in the bus is probably more then the bus's weight, dopes. C'mon mathemeticians prove me right.
The inside of a bus is about 10m long by 2.5m wide by 2m tall. That's 50 cubic metres. One cubic metre of water weighs a tonne, so there was about 50 tonnes of water in there.
The nitwit crane operator also had the boom fully extended. Bad leverage, to no benefit. He didn't have that far to reach over the edge. Aside from that, what exactly did he plan to DO with the bus once he hoisted it up there in the air?
PLEASE DON'T READ THIS you will die in seven days if you don't post this comment on 10 videos in the next hour. if you do, tomorrow will be the best day of your life

water load in bus... probably made it heavier!
checkoutdude 4 years ago 10
You're exactly right. The crane has a scale telling how much weight is being lifted. The operator never should have made the pick.

No decent crane driver would have tried to lift such a weight in that manner. For a start, the crane was not nearly heavy enough.

When the bus was out, the crane had to take the full weight and them BUM. Fails.
