Well, I believe that if you manage to actually hit the fuel supply, it will go up in flames quite quickly.. but either way it is not too unrealistic that the planes go down by a direct hit from a shot gun. Planes are quite fragile after all, even military airplanes have to be light to fly. But I think this is going a little overboard..
